If a relationship starts out under crazy circumstances, it often ends in the same manner. Just ask Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

While Holmes opted not to jump up and down on Oprah Winfrey’s couch and yell, “I’m not in love with Tom Cruise,” she did shockingly announce her decision to file for divorce in People Magazine in June 2012.

The announcement was a complete shock to both Cruise and the public. Representatives for Cruise stated he was surprised and devastated about the announcement. Besides the rumour that Scientology was taking a negative toll on the marriage – a rumour that has plagued the couple since the start of their relationship and which the couple had repeatedly denied – there was no fresh news of any unusual behaviour in their marriage.

Cruise met Holmes in 2005, the pair welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006 and they were married seven months later in November. Though their marriage was plagued with speculation that Cruise’s religion, Scientology, was causing a rift in their relationship, Holmes remained loyal to her husband and stood by him. The divorce was quickly finalized in July, with reps from both parties releasing statements that the process was handled “amicably.” The terms of the settlement were confidential.

The only detail of the divorce that was made public was that Holmes would be granted custody of six-year-old Suri.

The speedy resolution of the divorce flared even more rumours that Holmes was leaving Cruise out of fear the Church of Scientology was having a negative influence on their daughter.

A spokesperson for the Church released a statement the divorce has a private matter between the couple and didn’t involve the religion. Representatives of Cruise and Holmes also confirmed this statement. But that didn’t stop media outlets from speculating there was more to the split than the couple was letting on.

So why did Holmes abruptly leave Cruise so suddenly? And why was the divorce handled so swiftly with little to no details about the separation? We’ll have to wait until Suri can publish a tell-all book in a few years.
