Uma Thurman set to shake things up on ‘Smash’
Watch out Ivy and Karen. There’s a new ‘Marilyn’ in town.
Academy Award-nominated actress Uma Thurman has joined the cast of “Smash” in a five-episode arc, playing Rebecca Duvall, a big-time Hollywood star cast in the lead role of the fictional musical, “Bombshell.”
It’s hardly a stretch to see Thurman playing a big time movie star, but does she have what it takes to be Marilyn Monroe?
Ivy (Megan Hilty) and Karen (Katharine McPhee) sure don’t seem to think so.
In the next episode titled, “The Movie Star,” airing Monday, Apr. 16 at 10pm on CTV Two, we see bitter rivals Ivy (who was cast as Marilyn before they decided they needed a bigger “star” to attract investment dollars) and Karen (who has been gunning for the role the whole time) band together against their new rival.
In a short preview for the episode the ladies are shown bonding . . . and exchanging barbs, over drinks.
“I’m still the understudy last time I checked,” says Karen, in reference to Ivy’s recent meltdown on stage that has forced her out of “Bombshell.”
“When Rebecca Duvall goes down, everything’s up for grabs,” replies Ivy. “You’re going to have to pry that part out of my cold, dead hands.”
But the ladies aren’t the only ones who don’t seem to be too keen on the new star.
The preview also shows director Derek (Jack Davenport) telling producer Eileen (Angelica Huston) and writers Julia (Debra Messing) and Tom (Christian Borle) they need to bring back Ivy.
“She’s had a rough patch, but she’s fine. Be honest. We need her. We all know Rebecca Duvall can do this but God forbid she can’t and the (Karen) Cartwright girl is still too green. We all know this. We need Ivy back in the show.”
During her time on “Smash,” Thurman will perform the song, “Dig Deep,” which was written specifically for her by executive producers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The role marks the actress’ first recurring role on a TV series.
