'Once Upon a Time's' biggest villains are also good friends (off-screen, that is)
Can you picture The Evil Queen and Rumpelstiltskin sitting down at a nice restaurant and having dinner together?
While this may never happen in Storybrooke, it’s definitely something you might see in Vancouver (where “Once Upon a Time” is filmed), when actors Lana Parrilla and Robert Carlyle hit the town.
Parrilla, who portrays both the Evil Queen and Mayor Regina, says she and Carlyle, who plays Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold, have become good friends since the series began last year and spend time together off set.
“We do like to talk about movies, Laurel & Hardy, a lot of the old television shows, we go down that road a lot, we go out to dinners and stuff, we grab a drink here and there.”
So just what kind of reaction do they get from fans of the show, who may do a double take when they see the show’s two biggest villains having dinner together?
“Oh yeah, (we get recognized),” says Parrilla. “He gets it a lot more because he’s Begbie from ‘Trainspotting.’ No one can forget that (role),” says Parrilla, who admits she’s also a huge fan of Carlyle’s.
“When I found out he was going to be on the show, I was just beside myself. I couldn’t have been happier. He makes a perfect Rumpelstiltskin.”
Parrilla says most of the cast members aren’t from Vancouver and as a result, have become good friends with each other off-screen.
As well as her praise for Carlyle, she also has a soft spot for the young Jared Gilmore, who plays Regina’s adopted son Henry.
“He’s extremely bright. I made a pact with him early on, I said, ‘Since I have to be really mean to you when the camera is rolling, I have to be uber-nice to you off-screen.’
“We have become very close and I shower him with snuggles and kisses. And Nerds (candy). He loves Nerds and Skittles,” she adds with a laugh.
“Once Upon a Time” airs Sundays at 7 p.m. ET on CTV. Full episodes are also available online at CTV.ca.
