Connie Britton may have played a loving, supportive mother and guidance counsellor on TV’s “Friday Night Lights,” but on “Nashville,” mentoring is the furthest thing from her character’s mind.

On the new series, which airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on CTV two, Britton plays Rayna James, a veteran country star threatened by up-and-comer Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere).

“(Our characters) are butting heads in certain areas because my character is just a you-know-what sometimes and especially with somebody who’s such a veteran, who’s been in the industry for so long, and to have some little sh*t come up there and be like ‘OK, I’m going to take your thunder,’ it’s got to be a pretty awful feeling.”

But Panettiere, who was in Toronto earlier this year for CTV’s Upfronts, says unlike their competing characters, she and Britton get along great off-screen.

“Because of our characters and because of our dynamic, it’s not (like a) mother-daughter (relationship) but Connie and I get along well as friends.”

And even though the Emmy-nominated Britton has an impressive acting resumé that includes roles on TV series such as “American Horror Story,” “The West Wing” and “24,” Panettiere, who is best known for her role as a super-human cheerleader on “Heroes,” says she didn’t look to the veteran actress for advice.

“Actors don’t really give each other tips. You never know how someone’s going to react and that’s what’s great about this business. We each are brought in to play these characters because we’re good at something and that’s something you have to be appreciative of,” says Panettiere.

“We’re hired to do our jobs and you have to respect what each individual brings to their character, and you learn from them, regardless.”

“Nashville” airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on CTV two. Full episodes are also available online at CTV.ca.
