Season of 'firsts' comes to an end on 'Mike & Molly' finale
The season finale of “Mike & Molly” airs Monday, May 16 on /A\, with the full episode available online afterwards at CTV.ca.
“Mike & Molly” kicked off with a bang last fall, as it tells the story of an overweight couple that meets at an “Overeaters Anonymous” meeting, and slowly begin to fall in love.
“Mike & Molly” was created by Chuck Lorre, who also brought “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men” to the screen.
The series stars Billy Gardell as Mike and Melissa McCarthy as Molly. The cast is rounded out by Reno Wilson as Mike’s police partner and best friend Carl, Katy Mixon as Molly’s sister Victoria, Nyambi Nyambi as the waiter at their favourite restaurant, Samuel, and Swoosie Kurtz as Molly and Victoria’s mother, Joyce.
There was a little bit of off-screen drama around the series, when a blog on the “Marie Claire” website criticized the series in a post entitled “Should ‘Fatties’ Get a Room? (Even on TV?).” The internet went wild as people were shocked by the writer’s harsh and insensitive words, but none of the stars of “Mike & Molly” chose to enter the fray… except for a veiled jab at the comments during Mike’s thanksgiving speech.
On screen, Mike and his new girlfriend Molly haven’t had the easiest of romances: there was the first date where Molly mixes drugs and, the revelation that Molly is a better bowler than Mike, Mike’s difficult relationship with his mother Peggy, their first thanksgiving and Christmas meals together, as well as Mike meeting Molly’s ex-boyfriend.
The first season will come to a close with the episode “Peggy’s New Beau,” when Mike’s mother gets a new boyfriend, and he puts pressure on Mike about whether or not he plans on getting hitched to Molly.
McCarthy can currently be seen on the big screen in “Bridesmaids,” which is produced by Judd Apatow and starring “Saturday Night Live” actress Kristen Wiig. McCarthy plays the bride’s future sister-in-law.
McCarthy was also recently named as one of the “Ten Hot Famous Fat Chicks” by the Village Voice.
Meanwhile, Gardell is hitting the comedy circuit this summer.
Don’t forget, you can watch all of the CTV season finales online in the “Season Finale Screening Room.”
