Confession: Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) often drives me crazy – her flip-flopping and emotional indecision makes me want to reach through the screen and grab her shoulders and tell her to get it together already.

But she was on her A-game on Thursday’s episode, “Suddenly” – she was clear and assertive and authoritative. And still compassionate.

She took control on the side of the highway, rescuing an entire family with Alex (Justin Chambers) and even stood in the middle of the road around a blind curve to get help.

Her compassion and directness when offering the horrific news to the 18-year-old car crash survivor that one by one each of her family members were dying brought tears to my eyes.

There were more tears when Derek (Patrick Dempsey) says to Meredith, “We’ll be okay. It’s just the two of us,” while they’re waiting for a pizza delivery after her 39-hour day. Maybe it’s the New Year/clean slate/being happy with what you have head space I’m in, but for the first time this season, I actually believed that things could even be better than okay between them.

So you can imagine the floodgates that opened up when Meredith goes to the door for the pizza and finds the social worker standing there with Zola. Their baby! Zola! It was one of those moments that made me believe, even if it was just on TV, that everything is right with the world.

Until I remembered the final scene of Teddy (Kim Raver) pulling back the sheet on her husband Henry (Scott Foley) in the morgue. That scene was positively heart breaking. There’s going to be plenty of fall out in the upcoming episodes over that one!
