After a long journey from Ottawa, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his delegation of politicians and business leaders touched down in Beijing for a visit aimed at strengthening ties and boosting trade.

The prime minister -- accompanied by his wife Laureen and an entourage of five cabinet ministers, six Conservative MPs, as well as 40 community and business leaders -- was afforded a formal welcome after landing in the Chinese capital late Tuesday evening.

A more ceremonial greeting is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, before the trip's official itinerary gets underway.

So far, the only announcement to come out of the visit is the appointment of Canadian-born Chinese celebrity Mark 'Dashan' Rowswell as a goodwill ambassador to the country.

Dashan first captured the Chinese public's attention during a TV appearance while he was studying in Beijing in the mid-1980s. Since then, he has risen to the status of cultural icon in China, with many regarding him as the epitome of "East meets West."

"For many years Mark Rowswell has used his extraordinary talents to build bridges of understanding between Canada and China," the prime minister said in a statement announcing the appointment.

Harper is expected to follow up with even more weighty announcements in the coming days, however. For example, observers are closely watching for signs of new energy deals with the Asian economic giant.

Given the recent U.S. delay of a proposed pipeline to carry Canadian crude from Alberta to the U.S. Gulf Coast, the presence of several high-level Canadian oil and energy company executives amongst the Canadian delegates has bolstered expectations the prime minister will be pushing to increase Chinese investment in the sector.

Currently, the United States accounts for 97 per cent of all Canadian oil exports.

Satisfying China's demand for oil, however, potentially hinges on the construction of the Northern Gateway pipeline linking oil sands in Alberta to a port on the west coast of British Columbia.

The review of the project just launched in Canada, meaning it could be years before the route is in place.

So the prime minister is hoping to come away from his coming high-level meetings with other deals, including the long-simmering foreign investment protection agreement.

But the NDP says the prime minister must address issues such as the loss of manufacturing jobs in Canada.

"If these trade talks are only about oil, which is a wonderful resource we are giving away as fast as we can, then we will have failed the hundreds of thousands of Canadians and our children, who are looking for productive employment," Jinny Sims, the NDP's international co-operation and deputy foreign affairs critic, told CTV News Channel on Monday.

"This has to be about far more than oil. This has to be about manufacturing, and it has to be looking at trade in the widest spectrum."

Beyond talking trade, Harper's itinerary during his three days in the capital includes a tourism event and a tour of a building design centre.

Bilateral talks with current leaders President Hu and Premier Wen are also scheduled, as are meetings with Communist Party figures expected to take over by next year including Wen's likely successor Vice-Premier Li Keqiang.

After Beijing, the delegation heads to southern China where Harper is expected to talk business in the manufacturing city of Guangzhou and pandas in Chongqing.

While an announcement that China will send pandas on a long-term loan to Canadian zoos would undoubtedly capture hearts and headlines, the ongoing tensions in the Middle East -- and China's role in the international reaction to it -- threaten to overshadow the good will.

Harper will be under pressure not only to raise China's weekend veto of a UN Security Council resolution condemning the rising violence in Syria, but also China's human rights record.

Ahead of the trip, China's ambassador to Canada signalled that any critics should think before they speak.

"Canada and China are different in terms of history, culture, social system and stage of development," Zhang Junsai wrote in a letter to The Canadian Press.

"Instead of being barriers, these differences should be drivers for deeper understanding."

In that vein, a group of five British Columbia First Nations is calling on Chinese officials to turn the tables, particularly with respect to Canada's Aboriginal Peoples.

The Yinka Dene Alliance has written two open letters, one to Hu and another that is making the rounds in Chinese media, outlining areas of Canada's human rights record that bear scrutiny.

The problems include the number of missing and murdered aboriginal women, the disproportionate number of First Nations peoples in Canadian jails, and Ottawa's pursuit of resource development without their support.

Chief Larry Nooski, one of five chiefs to sign the letter, said he wants to help China understand "the facts of life" for aboriginals.

@ Island Man: Nice partisan refrain. However, the fact of the matter is that the Opposition Liberals and NDP formally approved all of the major budgetary spending put forth by Harper & Company during their minority parliamentary tenure (including the $62B federal stimulus program). Apparently, Canada's "debt," amidst an unprecedented global economic recession, hasn't been a real "concern" for your gang. Thankfully, our Conservative government has been reducing the deficit faster than anticipated. Thanks.

It is always prudent for a business to have good relations with a potential customer and investor! It would seem that this holds true for nations as well. Mr. Harper and company are doing the correct thing. This trip also sends a message to the US of A in that the oil may not be a given for them. The American business TV is all over the story today. More publicity means more folks interested and therefore more pressure on Obama and his Dems!

That's rather old fashioned.

Mark 'Dashan' Rowswell is old hat, forgotten and desperate for another paying gig as he don't do much in China or Canada for a while.

It would be like appointing "Quentin Durgens" to UK good will ambassador.
Who?

It never ceases to amaze me how much FAITH u right wingers have in a PM that tells 40 oil buddy execs to jump on the taxpayer-FINANCED train to China to talk about how they can ENRICH themselves, but yet you find a way to rationalize that this is in my (and Canada's) best interest.

And FYI yah I am an armchair critic like everyone else on here (especially u tory cheerleaders).

Harper has only increased spending and debt and he gets no credit for our safe banking system. The proof is in the proof if you can think out fo the Reform Box

I don't hate PM Harper, I don't like him either. China is at it's heart communist, brutal, lethal and dissent is not put up with(Tibet was brutalized). Slave wages and conditions are used to advance the wealth class and rules can be sidestepped and bought through crooked prefects and leaders. Humanity is rarer than clean air in China. Government have to "do the PR dance" Jean Chrétien did it, Mulroney also, it's politics. Most people don't trust China but deal with them regardless. Doing any less wouldn't be useful. PM Harper has a job and he is doing it.

I don't get it ... why would the BC First Nation leaders want to let the Chinese know that they can't look after their women, or that they apparently commit a disproportionate amount of crimes in Canada (and go to jail for it)? This seems a little unusual.

Interesting. We have a product to sell and a potential client willing to buy. We have a PM who is willing to become a common door to door petrol salesman to keep our economy above the waves while most others would either sit behind their desks or media sets talking about it. I wonder if most of the critics are also arm chair quarter backs wondering whether the next bottle should be Blue or Bud. Harper must have been listening in economics class. Canadians are weathered the recession better than most. The proof is the proof is the proof!

Aren't those questions the aborignals should be asking of themselves?

The government has to find the answers and solutions to every aborginal problem there ever was. But when in turn the government asks where the taxpayers money's gone the Aboriginals want the goverment to butt out - they can govern themselves. NOT!

For all you conservatives voters. Aren't you just so proud of Harper now as he throws any concerns about human rights out the window and closes his eyes to the fact the communist China imprisons their citizens for their religious beliefs? Harper has been slamming the NDP and Liberals for being too far to left on the political spectrum but now he's tying our economy to the largest communist government in the world. A government that thinks nothing of killing their own citizens in the streets as they did in Tiananmen square. It used to be hurray for religious democracy and for our military who go out to fight and die to protect democracy! I guess the blinders are off now eh. Under Harper it's hurray for big oil corporations and the almighty buck. You were warned Harper was going to be like this.

More politically fatuous comments that merely serve as a lame rhetorical excuse for angry and bitter anti-Conservatives to bash PM Harper, and avoid any intelligent argument on the subject. China is already invested in Canadian energy (oil sands). If you don't think they desperately want a pipeline to streamline their investment, you're a naive fool. Secondly, the Keystone XL pipeline, ostensibly, has Obama's support. He's merely delaying it, temporarily, to keep his left-wing base in order and dampen the cries from the environmental crowd. The U.S. is also invested in Canadian energy (oil), and wants to maximize its supply leverage, and North American reliance, the best it can. The notion, therefore, that Canada doesn't hold any cards makes one a "pudding-for-brains," not PM Harper. Lastly, the Chinese do business 24/7, and have only been concerned with Harper & Company playing ball with them. That's their focus. Former Liberal PM Chretien openly basked in the attention and the flattery (he was delighted when a Chinese official labelled Canada its "best friend"...as if China never cleverly whispered that into anybody else's ear).

This is nothing but another vacation for Harper and his bunch of goon's. ALL at tax payers expense and a lot of b.s. about oil, it is to push President Obama on the keystone pipline. I really wish he would open his eyes with his blurred vision and look at the price at the pumps in China. 75% less that it is today and everyday in Canada. This PM does not represent Canada, he is just a dictator and does not give a damn about this country. Haprer's father worked for Imperial Oil and Steven never had a job before he was able to get himself elected ( by default )Without a doubt he is worst PM we have ever had and for sure folks we WILL pay the price for his dog and pony show.

I wish the PM and all who have joined him on this trip to China all the best. I hope that they are able to meet all the objectives that they have set forth in their agenda and represent Canada well. I know there are some on these posts who just love to hate and wish nothing but bad for the PM. I wonder if it ever occurred to them that the PM represents this country. Instead of being divisive, lets try and work together to make things work instead of trying to destroy. Didn't Jack Layton say that "love is better than hate"? And if the NDP'ers on here who are always posting hate, shouldn't they listen to what Jack's last message to them was? I believe so and I believe (even though I'm not an NDP'er) what Jack said was right.

Harper is going to China for what exactly? To talk about energy when he energy to the US at lower price to Canadians? To talk about Canadian resources that are extracted by foreign countries instead of Canadian company? To talk about human rights in light of Toronto 1.5 billion photo ops, mass arrests and war measures? To talk about democracy while he has absolute despotic power without any legal opposition while in office with only 23% of the votes? How to buy billions dollars war planes from a foreign country while we no education, no health system money and 1/8 of the Canadian population use food banks??Clean up your own country before trying to say anything about others!

May be the government of China will keep Harper there in a jail since they do not like him for what he stands for as for our oil it should stay here we can use it here not sell it to China or the U.S.A. And just today it is announced that "A Chinese state-owned corporation wants the Supreme Court of Canada to overturn a ruling that would force it to stand trial in the deaths of two oilsands workers." in 2007. They were two 'temporary' workers from China.. brought over by their communist party owned Sinopec. They say that they have no official presence in Canada and yet we know that they have 17% ownership in Syncrude.. Sinopec " is seeking leave to appeal a Nov. 23 Alberta Court of Appeal judgment that orders the company to stand trial on 53 safety charges." .. Is this REALLY the calibre of company that we want handling our oilsands?.. suuuuure they are going to create jobs.. at the end of the line buddy, right after this Chinese crew we imported from the homeland.. and hey, they're happy to be working for half of what you used to get.. so if you don't value life and are that desperate to have a job we'll pay you the same as them .. I'll ask it again.. who will be cleaning up after the Chinese get full ownership (they have close to $20 billion dollars invested so far), their Northern Gateway pipeline, and hundreds of tankers navigating our coast? And China will be laughing at us (much like the rest of the world) as they refine and sell our crude to Asia for 'top dollar.. way to go Alberta and conservative twits...

China holds all the cards. We don’t have any negotiating clout with China. We used to when we had Chretien, who was far more pragmatic than pudding-for-brains Harper. Just to recap, No skills Steve told China to jam-it when he thought that all he would ever need is the friendly Republicans to buy our dirty oil. Unfortunately, he’s irked that pesky lefty in the White House who has a bit of both, conscience and moral guidance. No quick pipeline in the US and likely another 4 years of Obama. Yikes-go to plan B.China remembers when they are insulted. If only we had a leader that can use his head, we would be far better off.

Chief Larry Nooski, You do NOT speak for me or anyone other than yourself. Being a Canadian of Aboriginal descent, I do NOT agree with your hands out demands. My experience in life, longer and more productive than yours apparently, is that if you want something you must earn it or it is meaningless. Give up the reservation mentality! I left the res in 1940 to join the army (served in Italy and the low countries) and never went back. I earned my way through life, supported my family and we all prospered through hard work not handouts and political posturing. My children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are all productive citizens of Canada rather than sitting on the res protesting and demanding money for nothing. My late father told me something very poignant and true in the 1950s, that if you could show him a 200 year old indian then you would have a land claim. We can be proud of our heritage without being idiots. We are Canadians first, last and always. BTW, enough with the first nations garbage. We are NOT first nations. If you review the archeological record, we are more like the 6th or 7th nation. For the PM, I wish him well in China and at home. For our elected government, I wish them well and expect them to do their duty for the entire nation. For Her Majesty in this year of celebration, I say a job VERY well done in her service to us all and GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!

Where all the words of Mr. Kenney about the Liberals betraying "Canadian values" for attempting to strengthening ties with China? Unfortunately, all this confirms that interests and not mural values is what drives everything in the West!
