ZURICH, Switzerland — Swiss media report that the country's biggest city Zurich has been hit by a major power outage.

Online news portal 20min.ch says lights went out and trams came to halt at 11.06 a.m. (1006 GMT) Thursday causing traffic chaos in large parts of Switzerland's financial capital.

The website cited a spokesman for local electricity company EWZ confirming the outage.

EWZ spokesman Harry Graf told 20min.ch that technicians were still trying to determine the cause of the problem at once of its electricity substations.

He said the company is hoping to quickly restore power by switching to backup stations.
