Palin 'vengeful,' says author who moved in next door

Date: Saturday Oct. 1, 2011 8:22 AM ET

Joe McGinnis's new book "The Rogue: Searching for the Real Sarah Palin," hasn't won him any new friends in the Palin camp, and has likely created more than a few enemies among her supporters.

The book takes a hard look at Palin and her husband Todd, digging into her upbringing, what he considers her "deep streak" of racism, alleged drug use, rumours of affairs and general all-around bad parenting.

It's not flattering, and that may be part of the reason the Palins have filed a lawsuit against McGinnis related to the book -- something he's not allowed to discuss.

"She sounds stupid and she is stupid, so that part is real," McGinnis told CTVNews.ca in an interview, when asked whether there's any truth to the old-fashioned, American values image that has been crafted for Palin.

"This folksy, family values kind of thing, it's just the opposite. She's not folksy, she's not warm, she's not personable, she's not just the girl next door. She's a vengeful, mean spirited, somewhat paranoid woman who's also a religious fanatic."

McGinnis' book starts out gently enough. He arrives in Alaska with plans to live in Anchorage for four or five months, but spend most of his working days in Wasilla, the home town of the former Republican vice-presidential candidate.

But shortly after he starts looking for a home he is fortuitously offered a place right next door to Palin's.

In fact, the Palins rented it for a time and Todd himself renovated the house, which is just feet from their own home.

"I move to a state two-and-a-half times bigger than Texas and I wind up living 15 feet from the subject of my next book. Forty years in the business and I've never had a piece of luck like this," McGinnis writes.

Shortly after moving in, however, McGinnis was confronted by Todd, who quickly recognized his name from an earlier piece he wrote about Palin, and wasn't happy about his reasons for being there this time around.

That night, Sarah posted a rant on Facebook about their new neighbour, which was instantly picked up by mainstream media. It suggested the 67-year-old McGinnis was spying on her nine-year-old daughter and even looking through her windows.

The posting triggered a firestorm of controversy for McGinnis. He quickly became the subject of heated discussions on right-wing talk radio, had media banging on his door and even received death threats.

Despite the less-than-warm welcome from the Palins -- who promptly erected a tall fence -- McGinnis set about his business of finding "the real Sarah Palin," conducting hundreds of interviews and following countless leads.

McGinnis had heard rumours that Palin had once been involved with an athlete who turned out to be now-retired NBA star Glen Rice. At the time, he was a visiting high school basketball player who met Palin (then Sarah Heath) when she was a reporter in Anchorage and he was in town for a basketball tournament.

McGinnis tracked Rice down in Miami, and asked him if he remembered the weekend he had met Palin.

"He said, 'Oh I remember that as if it was yesterday, she was special, I had a crush on her,'" McGinnis said.

He also asked Rice if he remembered Palin "freaking out" about it, as had been described to him by people who knew her at the time.

"He laughed and laughed and said that story, that's just crazy," McGinnis said.

"He said, 'We stayed in touch for months afterwards and talked on the telephone right up until the time she got married six or seven months later.'"

McGinnis said Palin, the former governor of Alaska and former mayor of Wasilla, still draws a lot of water in her home state, and many sources would only speak anonymously for fear of retribution.

"A lot of people have said if you quote me by name at the very least I'm going to lose my job and it could get worse, look at the things she did to you, the things she said about you, and all you did was move in next door."

While he admits this isn't ideal, he said he only used information he could corroborate with several sources and often had to weed through rumours and innuendo that simply didn't turn out to be true.

As much as 80 per cent of the material he collected wasn't used because he was unable to meet that standard of corroboration, McGinnis said.

Still, the Palins have made it clear they are unhappy with the work. Palin's lawyer John Tiemessen recently sent a letter to McGinnis' publisher, threatening to sue over the book, which has faced tough criticism from several critics.

In a letter, Tiemessen said "The Rogue" contains lies and rumours disguised as truth, and attributed largely to anonymous sources.

Whether the book affects Palin's popularity has yet to be seen. And it isn't clear yet whether it will matter when the 2012 election rolls around. Palin has been ambiguous about whether she plans to throw her name in the hat for the Republican presidential nomination.

McGinnis, however, said he believes Palin has decided against it.

"She said recently that the presidency is just a title, and that she doesn't need a title," he told CTVNews.ca. "Well guess what, it's not just a title, it's a job. But she doesn't like jobs, she's quit every one she ever had."

It's ironically funny to read some of these comments. I may not be smart but I'm so glad I was born with enough of a brain to think for myself and not automatically adopt and regurgitate right-wing dogma as an excuse for political awareness. Apparently I fall into the "leftie sheep" category because I think Palin's a dud. That one gave me a good giggle...

I for one believe Sarah Palin is extremely cunning and intellectual. I believe she will take America to the next level and like our PM Stephen Harper she will change civilization as we know it. God bless Harper and God keep Sarah Palin - the next President of the United States of these America's.

Cheer up Prof. Remember, freedom of speech is a double edged sword that can be a real stinker at times. Go watch Fox or Suns News, they are sure to brighten your day. Thanks.

The only reason she isn't announcing her candidacy is because she doesn't want to answer any serious questions along the way and made to look like silly again - as if she doesn't already. She'll throw her hat in the ring on the 11th hour and then her people will circle the wagons so that no reporter can ask her any questions without her having a script in hand. I am torn - i hope she is elected and the Americans learn a hard lesson that will take many generations to recover from. They don't seem to appreciate the consequences of their actions and perhaps Palin will finally teach that lesson once and for all.

Interviews with McGinnis show that he is the hateful, vengeful, obnoxious person, that has a liberal political agenda, to try and destroy Sarah Palin with lies ,rumors, and gossip. His arrogance reminds me of the hate-filled Keith Olberman. Anyone who believes his outrageous hatchet job writings, are other liberal haters. I hope the Palins sue him,and his publishers into the oblivion they deserve!

Tsk,Tsk, I'm so upset. The poor right wingers always seem to be getting picked on. Thank goodness for Fox and Sun News... where telling the truth isn't as important as spreading lies and fear.

I honestly do not understand how Sarah Palin is even news. She is an air head, that ruins the english language, even makes up her own words. What is it with the USA these days, they have so many people in public eye, that are famous for what??? Then they make shows about their disfunctional families and put them on Dancing with the stars. It must be because the US education system is so bad, everyone is dumb enough to believe everything they hear.Well they voted for George Bush and he got in a second time (cheated though), now look at the state of their economy. The whole country is based on war, and fame. Just drive across the border in Washington state and see how many places are up for sale or stores that have gone out of business. If Palin runs and wins, the whole country will colapse.

This pretty much confirms everything I have always believed about Sarah Palin, though I prefer the word vapid in describing her intellect. Though most American extreme right wing religious fanatics do tend to see the world in very simple terms, usually due to a lack of critical thinking skills, Palin provides a new low for simplistic, Sunday school thinking. The very frightening prospect that someone so devoid of intelligence could aspire to the highest office in America is par for the course for that country. I hope this book helps to derail that ambition. While I still believe Barrack Obama is the worst President ever, a dim witted, mean, spiteful religious fanatic like Palin would be worse. This book is a definite read for me

Vengeful? Sarah Palin had never heard of creeper McGinniss before he moved next to her bedroom window, and started planting gossip & rumors about her all over Alaska. If Sarah was "vengeful", she would have told her husband to punch McGinniss's lights out.

It is amazing that so many people form their opinions from the U.S. totally biased left-wing media. While I would not vote for her as president for political reasons, she is not the "dumb as they come, nobody, 10 bricks short of a load, ordinary citizen" as the leftie sheep state here. She is a graduate of the Universiry of Idaho, former mayor of Wasilia, former chairperson of the Alaske Oil and Gas Commission, as well as the youngest governor ever in the history of Alaska, serving for three years...Some nobody...So a muckraker moves in next door for the purpose of stalking the family, and because he can't get the dirt he's looking for he writes slanderous garbage about them, and she gets attacked because stands up for her own family and reputation. So lets imagine a Fox news reporter moves in next door to a Democratic governor for the purpose of spying , who do you think CNN and NBC would be attacking then?

"'She sounds stupid and she is stupid, so that part is real,' McGinnis told CTVNews.ca." Oh, no; it doesn't sound like the author had an axe to grind. Not at all. He comes across as very fair, impartial, and thoroughly professional. (Sure.)

The author purposely moved in next door to the Palins to dig up dirt on them. What does that tell you about this author? Nothing more than a tabloid book. Move on. Nothing to see.

Sarah P. is definitely an interesting character. Clearly not presidential material, though. Anyone who thinks she is needs to become part of sociological study. This book of course dags out the dirt (or else it wouldn't sell), but it doesn't change my opinion in the least.

I guess in Canada we accept the rantings of a liar and smear artist. In the US, it has been generally accepted that this book is based on anonymous sources and has no truth to it at all. There is even a potential libel suit in the works right now. So, if you are a progressive/liberal/socialist, this book is right down your hate based thinking. If you are a rational human being, this book is destined for use in isolated outhouses in the north or cabin country.

Anyone thinking that McGinnis set out, with journalistic objectivity and lack of political bias, to write an "insightful" book about Sarah Palin is more than a naive fool. The clear mission was character assassination, to get the most attention for the work, and to sell the most books. It's been done so many times with famous people that it's a literary cliche. McGinnis is, in my opinion, a little toad who pursued Palin with a vengeance. He's less credible than she could ever be.

If she had nothing to hide, nothing to be ashamed of, she'd be welcoming a writer living next door and give him carte blanch to her and her family. If you're a liar, a cheat and a scumbag, you'll do exactly as Palin did.. nuff said.

I can't say I am surprised that she and her family have turned out this way. Look people, if the Palins had gone out of their way to be nice neighbours, he would have had a much harder time writing the book. If for instance Tod had gone over, introduced himself, and asked the guy over for a beer, and been nice to him? If they had invited him to a BBQ and told the kids to be on best behavior, then it puts paid to the allegations from the rest. At least it puts it in some doubt. But no. I think perhaps this is the real deal, this is really the Palin head set. They can sue all they want, but they have to prove it is not true. Hard to do when it is! I have known that she would never run for Pres. for months. She is too lazy! She knows the long hours that Obama works, and she is not going to buy into that job! Not when she can ask for huge speaking fees, get up at late and party hearty.

I thought I had hit the CBC button by mistake , all the left leaning bloggers usually hang out over there spewing their own personal brand of vitriol . How you can claim to hate someone you have never met amazes me , can't you just disagree with her political beliefs without bringing the hate word into it. All I have heard about Ms Palin is from the media and they tend to portray anyone that is in their sights in a way that effects their markets .

The Democrats sure obsess over her. Are they that afraid of her? It's amazing to me how INTOLERANT the lefties are. They claim tolerance, but go on the worst attacks if you don't agree with them. Cults do the same thing, don't they?

Just watch her on TV, she is obviously a power-hungry, controlling, manipulative person. She is NOT a typical American wife/mother. I bet she runs her house like a prison. I do not see a caring, loving, mother. I do not see a soft-side, kind-hearted, compassionate woman. If she has nothing to hide, or be ashamed of, she should candidly interview with the author of this book and address the specific accusations. I feel sorry for her children having grown up with a mother like her. It must be a lonely life as a child with a cold, distant, disconnected woman like that.

Ever notice how the lefties always go on smear campaigns? Last week, Larry Flint offered a million dollars if someone can dig up some dirt. Why can't the lefties stay out of the gutter? I don't get it. With them, emotions seem to trump logic and common sense. Show me a pouty child, and I'll show you someone who's anti-Republican.

Even if he is negative towards her and filters all of his sources with a bias, even embellishing them or twisting the truth, he has enough negative material (which likely wasn't ALL fabricated) to paint a general picture of her character. There must be truth to some of what he is saying. Understand that the book cannot be 100 per cent false.

I'm not sure what to think, while I have a severe dislike for Palin, I am wary about believing a book that seems closes to complete muckraking. I've no idea about the veracity of the Joe McGuinness's back catalogue. At the same time, all these things he says about Palin smack me in a: "Really, you're surprised?" kind of way. Unless they get corroborated by independent sources, I stay skeptic on this front.

The guy moved next door to her and her family. That's more than a little creepy. How can anyone take this book as a reliable source of information. I don't like Sarah Palin as a politician, but I don't hate her or obsess over her personally. He doesn't like her, I get it, so what?

I heard Mc Ginnis being interviewed on the radio. He sounded vengeful, hateful with total dislike for the Palin family. How could anyone like him with those feelings write a fair, balanced report / biography on this family. His only purpose was to bring them down no matter how far he had to go into the gutter, and how much smear (factual or fabricated) he had to print to bring his message to the public. With the end result being able to sell more books make more money and to satisfy his hatred. How would anyone like to have this kind of person living right next door to them (15 ft. away), for this length of time, knowing this was the only reason he was living there. It had to be hell on earth. I hope the Palins are successfull in their lawsuit.

Palin is a "nobody". She holds no public office, is not a politician... just a private citizen yet she is constantly under the microscope. It's too bad no one scrutinizes Obama the same way... there's a lot of interesting "stuff" in his past but no one wants to talk about that. Does anyone talk about the "kook' Janet Napolitano... head of Homeland Security... there's a scary stupid person. Palin seems to get mopre publicity than Obama and yet he is president. I guess the media only obssess over Republican... Democrats can get away with anything.

I am not a fan fo Palin, in fact if she ever became president, the US would be worse than it is now. I am sure she isnt the squeaky clean person she wants us to believe she is, it seems she is a mean person, in fact her whole family are weird. She is as dumb as they come, anything outside Alaska she has no clue about. No doubt the book reveals the real Sarah Palin.
