Pro tennis player Serena Williams has been fined US$2,000 for an outburst at the U.S. Open final one day earlier, escaping harsher penalties such as a suspension or a possible ban from future major tennis tournaments.

Williams, who is known for her hot temper and was already on probation for an earlier outburst, lashed out at umpire Eva Asderaki over a call that didn't go her way on Sunday.

In a statement Monday afternoon, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said that referee Brian Earley had "fined Serena Williams $2,000 following the code violation issued for verbal abuse during the women's singles final" and that the amount of the fine "is consistent with similar offenses at Grand Slam events."

The fine amounts to pocket change for Williams, who earned $1.4 million at the tournament.

The USTA also said that Grand Slam committee director Bill Babcock had conducted a review of the incident and found that "Williams' conduct, while verbally abusive, does not rise to the level of a major offence under the Grand Slam Code of Conduct."

Williams, a 13-time Grand Slam winner, was docked a point for shouting "Come on!" after hitting a blistering on-the-line return. She eventually lost the match in straight sets to Sam Stosur.

The official ruled that William's shout distracted Stosur from hitting a return shot, and she gave the point to Stosur.

Williams initially received a code violation for arguing with the official over the call, but then the situation escalated when she sat down between sets, next to the official's tower.

"If you ever see me walking down the hall look the other way. You're out of control, you're a hater and you're unattractive inside," Williams said during the exchange.

She added: "Who would do such a thing? And I never complain. Wow. What a loser."

After the game Williams took on a gracious demeanor, giving credit to Stosur for playing well and saying that the call probably didn't affect the outcome of the match anyway, since she was simply outplayed.

Speaking to reporters, Williams chalked up her behaviour to the intensity of being in a U.S. Open final.

"I don't even remember what I said, it was just so intense out there," Williams said.

"It's the final for me, and I was just -- I have to go -- I guess I'll see it on YouTube. I don't know. I was just in the zone. I think everyone, when they play, they kind of zone out kinda thing. I don't know, I'll see it later, I'm sure."

Williams was on probation for 2010 and 2011 after she launched a profanity-laced tirade against an official at the 2009 U.S. Open, following a foot-fall call.

At that event Williams lost in the semi-finals to Kim Clijsters, who went on to win the tourney.

Williams was fined $82,500 for the incident and was put on probation for a two-year period that was set to end after the 2011 U.S. Open.

She was warned at the time the fine could be doubled and she could be suspended from other grand slam events if she were to be involved in another "major offence" during her probation.

Williams did not use any profanity during the Sunday outburst.

SW just demonstrated mental weakness during her match with SS. It was one point... let it go... a mentally tough opponent goes out and wins the next one and the next one. The one thing you can't control in sport is the ref's calls. I had great respect for SW in watching her return from her injuries but now she must earn it back after this tantrum.

I guess she will play the RACE CARD the next time someone calls something she doesn't like.... she all but did it on Sunday...... just think what a fine example she is to young tennis players... she is full of HATRED and can't wait to take it out on anyone that gets in her way. or dares not worship her...... I have been a loyal women's tennis fan for 30 years,.. I'm finsihed.. . THE HELL WITH TENNIS... this is the last straw...a $2000 fine is a fricking joke.... I hope TV ad rates on any game she ever plays in drops through the basement and that the Tennis Associtaion grows a set of balls to stand up to BULLIES like her and anyother player (MALE or FEMALE) that attempts to bully or threaten the judge or ref... just imagine if a citizen did that in court in front of a judge .. WOW.... good bye Tennis... I have enjoyed it.., but I'll find something else......

I don't know how her comments to the official can be considered anything but racist. You will need to look through her eyes to recognize what she was saying.

I did the math. Given our relative incomes, a $2,000 fine for her is the same as using a 1892 Act to fine me 12 cents for something. I mean, what's the point -- $2,000 ??!?!! That's a quick chit out of petty cash for her, and certainly no deterrent. No point to the fine; it just looks (real) silly.

Serena Williams says she never complains? What a joke! That's all she does. She's a whiner and a poor sport. Good on the Aussie for beating her! Williams has no class and she should be ashamed of herself! Now who's the loser, Serena?

What a silly comment to make regarding fighting in the NHL. Hockey is completely irrelevant in this discussion thread. At the heart of this story is the disrespect for officials shown by Williams. It speaks greatly to her status as a role model. I understand this incident hardly compares to her previous outbursts, but someone really needs to throw the book at this poor sport!

@LM I think you might be interpreting the rules a bit differently than I am. I don't think it's a question of whether they intended to hinder that makes it intentional hindrance but whether the action that hindered was intentional. "
From what I could find:
'Deliberate' means a player did what he intended to do, although the resulting effect on his opponent might or might not have been what he intended. Example: a player, after his return is in the air, gives advice to his partner in such a loud voice that his opponent is hindered. 'Involuntary' means a non-intentional act such as a hat blowing off or a scream resulting from a sudden wasp sting."

Her fine is less money than her earrings, and probably her fake nails.... two fashion accessories that are utterly ridiculous in a tennis match. Ridiculous and fake - two words that will follow her everywhere.

$2000..... What a joke... Tennis is considered the "gentleman's sport" her conduct would fall under something you would see like trash talking before a boxing or wrestling match. Yelling out loud like that during play and calling the referee a loser. Gross behavior and not her first time. American players that have these behaviors such as Roddick and Williams should start setting a standard for young people and stop the cry baby temper tantrum that will not change the call or the match. Some comments said McEnroe behavior was treasured and people loved him but I know lot's of people did not treasure McEnroe's behavior or find him a classy player. The $2000 dollar fine was a miss step on the governing body of Tennis and did not set any example. She drops more in a single shopping spree on a pair of shoes.

I don't think this should be considered a major incident. Serena did not use foul language, threaten or make physical contact.. The umpire should be the one apologizing. It was a judgement call and it appears she made a bad judgement. Serena yelled because she felt the point was won as it looked to be out of reach of Stosur. Stosur attempted to hit the ball but it went off the tip of her racquet. How did that hinder her chance of making contact? It wouldn't. I think the ump made a mistake.

"What a loser," "You're a hater," And now we have just a glimpse of the bigoted person you are Serena. Yes, and the judge(s) who fined you are probably so PC whipped they refused to hand out the fine you deserved for accusing this line judge of racial bias. something that must hold you since you instantly played that card.

Williams is an elite athlete and has been enormously successful in her career. Nobody posting a comment here is even in the same universe as Williams, let alone on the same planet. Not one person posting comments here has a clue what it takes or what it's like to be at the top of Women's Tennis. Not saying you're not entitled to your opinion, just saying, no matter what your opinion is, it's uninformed. It is what it is.

That was a terrible call by the referee, and I am a referee so I don't take a shizz on them lightly. Good for serena, someone has to call out those officials when they make a mistake. She got a little tough on her during the break but hey, its alot of emotion when you're playing at that level.

I am happy to know that in order to be ATTRACTIVE inside, and not a loser but a WINNER, and to be able to look at Serena if I see her in a hallway, all I have to do is call her shot "in" instead of "out".

Lots of talent but ungracious and with a chip on her shoulder. Her comments seem to focus around (hypothetical) accusations concerning the color of her skin. Not a classy player at all and somewhat forgetful when she deems it necessary to be so.

The rules are clear. Where hindrance is unintentional, the point should be replayed. By awarding Stosur the point, the umpire ruled SW deliberately tried to affect her opponent's play -- in a grand slam final. Clearly that was not the case. SW is not a cheater and anyone with 13 grand slam titles would have been appalled at the implication by the ump that she was cheating. That's where the emotion came from. Azderaki is a good ump, but here she got it wrong. She should have replayed the point and spoken to SW near the chair. As it is, she affected play during the final, if not the outcome. Umps are not there to affect play, so her decision was not the right one in the circumstances. The ump in the Murray-Nadal semi showed much better judgment and restraint when not calling AM for time violation, suggesting a clearer understanding of his role. All of that notwithstanding, SW should have kept her mouth shut and had it out with EA after the match in private, or else called for the referee on the spot to rule on the issue. Admittedly easier said than done in the pressure of the moment. But there is no excuse for her behaviour, and she should apologize even if she was wronged and insulted by the call.

Williams' behavior, to me, is an indication that she uses performance enhancing drugs. Her physique shows it, her attitude shows it, and her play show it. But the powers that be won't test her? Hmmm something fishy going on there... but honestly, who cares... it's tennis LOL!!!

I don't see anyone complaining when in baseball a dude tells off the umpire, and ppl love watching fights in hockey. And didn't anyone notice, right after Serena fell 0-1, the crowd went CRAZY rooting for her. Keep on shouting and kicking Serena!

My son was watching this - what kind of message does her "outburst" send to impressionable kids who look up to her. I had to explain to my son that her behaviour wasn't appropriate no matter how good of a tennis player she is. She showed little sportsmanship and acted more like a 5 year old baby than an adult woman.

I hope that the officials come up with a unique consequence for this behavior. A fine won't mean much to this individual and neither will a suspension. If she would like to play tennis again, I suggest she be required to write a full page apology to the chair official and place it in the New York Times. AND, at next year's US Open she may attend BUT ONLY if she agrees to volunteer as one of those kids chasing stray balls around between points for the entire Tournament.

HI,The rule is quite clear. For the point to be replayed or forfeited, it it an absolute requirement that Stosur's ability to return the ball was affected. Remembering that no one has a reaction time of less than .2 of a second, and the sound would have taken another .06 of a second to reach her, STOSUR HAD MISSED THE RETURN WELL BEFORE SHE HAD TIME TO REACT TO WILLIAM'S SHOUT. Surely, as in the "not ready" rule it is up to the player to complain if she believes her return is affected. OK, Serena did react badly but the umpire should also be disiplined.

Just ban her from tennis and let us all see where does WTA heads. I agree there should be rules for such actions, on the contrary it is OK for players to grunt, but not OK to say "come on". Yeah both grunting and any sort of talk is distraction for opponent player as well as fans alike. So disappointed with her behavior and this episode will dock her big time considering she is on probation.

This lack of professionalism has no place on the tennis courts. What kind of message is she sending to the youth of today? That it's okay to be rude as long as you play well. That we don't need to exercise self-control if we have made a name for ourselves. We don't need anymore selfish, self-centered celebrity brats. We need better role models. Ban her forever.....

And BTW I have NEVER seen a stupid fight on a tennis court, but you definitely see AT LEAST one fight every dam hockey match. Tennis is certainly a much more gentleman and women game then stupid hockey.

What I find interesting, disturbing and pathetic is that when it comes to Serena Williams, an American and the most dominant female player in the world, it's always at the UNITED STATES Open that she has such issues with tournament referees. From back in the day when she was so blatantly having points STOLEN from her during her match with Jennifer Capriati (by a referee) that they had to make the player challenge system OFFICIAL for the entire sport because everyone saw the truth on television. And yet that umpire still has a job and I'm sure this one will as well. Johnny MacEnroe, Jimmy Conners, Jennifer Capriati, Ilse Natase...the list goes on for players who've exerted much more outlandish tantrums and tirades at the open but have acted with impunity! It's ridiculous! Why is the US Open so consistently hostile to this woman who is AN AMERICAN!!!

I hope that she is suspended for her actions. She is to act like a professional, not a spoiled brat!!!
