CERNOBBIO, Italy European Central Bank chief Jean-Claude Trichet says if Greece were to leave the eurozone and revert to the drachma that would be the "worst possible option."
Trichet was speaking Saturday during a business conference on Lake Como. EU Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, also attending the conference, said Greece is reacting well to the economic measures put in place after the crisis.
Almunia, the EU antitrust chief, said he has "full confidence in the reaction from ... Greek authorities once the package was agreed." He said EU reports show the implementation is taking place "in an adequate way."
The crisis nearly led to Greece's bankruptcy earlier this year. Athens is currently receiving rescue loans from a three-year C110 billion (US$140 billion) package.
