LONDON — The grey-haired woman gently pets the cat, occasionally glancing furtively at a garbage bin. Then she strikes, casually grabbing it by the scruff, tossing it in, popping the lid closed, and quickly strolling away.

The surveillance video posted online by Lola the cat's owners takes only seconds, but it has outraged thousands of viewers around the world, some of whom posted angry messages pledging retribution. Now, police say they've identified the woman and posted guards outside her house in central England.

Investigators at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which prosecutes cruelty cases, said Tuesday that the grey striped cat was trapped for 15 hours before being rescued on Sunday morning by her owners, who told a British newspaper they heard Lola's muffled cries from inside the bin. The distressed cat was unharmed.

The society said it planned to interview the woman involved after it confirmed her identity, but declined to say whether she had been identified by a viewer of the clip online.

Police in the city of Coventry urged local residents to show restraint.

"Coventry Police are supporting the society's investigation and would urge the public to leave the matter to be dealt with in the appropriate manner by the authorities," the West Midlands police department said in a statement.

Lola's owner Stephanie Mann said she and husband Darryl couldn't find Lola on Sunday morning but followed the sound of her meows.

"We thought she might be trapped under the car because she sounded like she was hurt, so we followed her cries and eventually found her in the bin," she told the Coventry Telegraph newspaper.

The couple had previously installed a personal surveillance camera outside their home following a spate of thefts in the area.

Mann said they checked the video tape expecting to discover local youths, or a drunk, had thrown Lola into the bin late on Saturday evening, but were shocked to discover the culprit was a respectable looking woman.

"I was absolutely heartbroken to see how someone could just be so cruel," she told the newspaper. "I don't know what went through her head but it was just disgusting to watch and it broke my 8-year-old daughter's heart."

Mann later posted the clip online, where it has attracted tens of thousands of views.

Coventry police department said a small number of community support officers -- wardens who assist the police but have no powers of arrest -- had been stationed near the woman's home after a crowd gathered outside.

People that enjoy inflicting cruelty on living things, there is something wrong with them. As stated by a previous poster Karma has a way of coming back to you.

@missme For years I had cats bawling and howling all night long upsetting my indoor cats that are so tame they can't hunt mice and then the strays would poop in my garden whenever they pleased. So what I did was buy dry cat food and put a couple bowls out in the garden. And it is true an animal won't poop where it eats. they are quiet now and take care of the mice.

Hmm, Cat stuck in trash can for 15 hours, I say put the woman in the can (AKA Prison) for 15 years or in an actual trash can for 15 hours and call it a day.

First, why was this cat out without it's owners? This happened because the owners were NOT RESPONSIBLE and were with their cat. How much damage has this cat done to neighbours' property? If you believe in Karma, then perhaps this was Karma for the owners being irresponsible... This incident is not all on the woman who threw the cat in the bin, the owners also have a SHARE in this. Do not get me wrong, she was wrong and will likely get hers...

I have an opposite opinion here... I have a neighbourhood cat that its owners leave outside at night and this cat has clawed through my windows and gotten into my house and attacked my cats and our city can't do anything about it! My cats are indoor cats as all cats should be!!! If I could get close enough to that cat to trap it I would...maybe this cat got into this lady's flower gardens or ripped through her window and she was just trying to teach it a lesson! You don't know the entire story yet, The cat in my area has caused damage to my house, has cost me money in vet bills because of the injury to my cat and is a meowing pain in my side at night meowing and clawing at my windows and causing me to shut them at night even when I don't have AC.

wow! Lots of anger here people! This woman may be mentally ill, have alzheimers, etc. You don't even know her story, so why so much rage? I LOVE cats, but anyone who does something like this needs help, not hatred.

to CT: i am sick of HUMANS pooping on my lawn. yes, this has happened. once i caught a 6 year old girl defecating under my tree, and just last week i found a steaming pile of human feces behind my garage. does that give me the ok to stuff random people into a garbage bin?and to all the people who say 'its just a cat'. its not just a cat. its a life. period.

Good thing the owner had a decent CCTV system. You would think that in a country like the UK, where cameras are everywhere, people would be less likely to do ridiculous things like what was done in the video.

Justice for the innocent cat. Arrest and inprison that woman for a senseless crime. She should be humiliated on national television.

Seriously, folks, it's a CAT. Perhaps if people kept their pets at home rather than inflicting them on the rest of us, these things wouldn't happen. Oh wait..these things couldn't happen because they'd be AT HOME.

As Thomas Edison said: "Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages." This woman proved Mr. Edison right yet again.

To C.T. from Vancouver, the issue isn't the old lady's anger or what might have caused her actions. The issue is that she put the life of an innocent animal in harm's way. If the cat was untrained, the owners, not the cat, need to be held responsible for damages the cat causes, if any were caused to send this woman into such an act of frustration. Taking her frustrations out on the cat is completely inappropriate. And, for some people and families, an animal is as much a part of the family as the humans that comprise it.

I wonder how many times she did something like this without getting caught? To the complainers that say all cats should be confined: great idea. Keep all cats indoors, especially in urban areas. Then, when the city is overrun with mice and rats, because the cats are all locked up, let the complainers go out and catch them all. Sounds fair to me, no?

Perhaps the cat's owners shouldn't have allowed their pet to wander outdoors without a leash. Irresponsible pet owners are as bad as the woman who put the cat in the garbage can.

What is wrong with people nowadays?! No respect for life whatsoever. I don't condone people who let their cats roam at will, but this is just plain wrong.

I'm sorry that this happened to the Mann's poor little cat but I LOVE the fact that they posted the clip online - it serves as evidentiary proof of this woman's cruelty and I sincerely hope that it will embarrass her tremendously. She deserves it! This is NOT funny!

They caught her on camera and reported her to police, should be case closed. Was it to identify her that they posted it on YouTube? The police are urging people to exercise restraint and not seek retribution against the woman. I do not advocate animal cruelty or criminal behaviour of any kind but.... by posting her on YouTube this woman's life is now at risk. Am I way off base here or is it a slippery slope?

Seriously? a cat? people are outraged and threatening her? There are so many injustices in the world toward our own kind. The reason I hate cats is because of their owners. Cat people who treat their cats better than their children. Maybe this woman was sick of this cat pooping on her lawn or something. How long did it take the owners to realize they hadn't seen their fur balled friend? Why did it take 15 hours? ugghhh. People need some perspective in life.

I am guessing the most common comment will be something to the effect of putting this woman in a trash bin. I couldn't agree more.

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing. Release this man and give him a medal for doing the right thing by his daughter. I can't wait to see the episode on W5, I will certainly be watching this one.
