WASHINGTON — Americans increasingly are convinced -- incorrectly -- that U.S. President Barack Obama is a Muslim, and a growing number are thoroughly confused about his religion.

Nearly one in five people, or 18 per cent, said they think Obama is Muslim, up from the 11 per cent who said so in March 2009, according to a poll released Thursday. The proportion who correctly say he is a Christian is down to just 34 per cent.

The largest share of people, 43 per cent, said they don't know his religion, an increase from the 34 per cent who said that in early 2009.

The survey, conducted by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center and its affiliated Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, is based on interviews conducted before the controversy over whether Muslims should be permitted to construct a mosque near the World Trade Center site. Obama has said he believes Muslims have the right to build an Islamic centre there, though he's also said he won't take a position on whether they should actually build it.

In a separate poll by Time magazine/ABT SRBI conducted Monday and Tuesday -- after Obama's comments about the mosque -- 24 per cent said they think he is Muslim, 47 per cent said they think he is Christian and 24 per cent didn't know or didn't respond.

In addition, 61 per cent opposed building the Muslim centre near the Trade Center site and 26 per cent said they favour it.

The Pew poll found that about three in 10 of Obama's fiercest political rivals, Republicans and conservatives, say he is a Muslim. That is up significantly from last year and far higher than the share of Democrats and liberals who say so. But even among his supporters, the number saying he is a Christian has fallen since 2009, with just 43 per cent of blacks and 46 per cent of Democrats saying he is Christian.

Among independents, 18 per cent say Obama is Muslim -- up from 10 per cent last year.

Pew analysts attribute the findings to attacks by his opponents and Obama's limited attendance at religious services, particularly in contrast with Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, whose worship was more public.

Andrew Kohut, the Pew Research Center's director, said the confusion partly reflects "the intensification of negative views about Obama among his critics." Alan Cooperman, the Pew Forum's associate director for research, said that with the public hearing little about Obama's religion, "maybe there's more possibility for other people to make suggestions that the president is this or he's really that or he's really a Muslim."

Obama is the Christian son of a Kenyan Muslim father and an American mother. From age 6 to 10, Obama lived in predominantly Muslim Indonesia with his mother and Indonesian stepfather. His full name, Barack Hussein Obama, sounds Muslim to many.

White House officials did not provide on-the-record comments on the survey, but they prompted Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell of Houston to call The Associated Press.

Caldwell, who said he has known Obama for years, said the president is a Christian who prays every day. He said he was not sure where the public confusion about the president's religion came from, but he called false media reports about it "a 24-hour noise box committed to presenting the president in a false light."

Six in 10 of those saying Obama is a Muslim said they got the information from the media, with the largest portion -- 16 per cent -- saying it was on television. Eleven per cent said they learned it from Obama's behaviour and words.

Despite the confusion about Obama's religion, there is noteworthy support for how he uses it to make decisions. Nearly half, or 48 per cent, said he relies on his religion the right amount when making policy choices, 21 per cent said he uses it too little and 11 per cent too much.

At the same time, the poll provides broad indications that the public feels religion is playing a diminished role in politics today, with fewer people than in 2008 saying the Democratic and Republican parties are friendly toward religion.

With elections for control of Congress just over two months away, the poll contains optimistic news for Republicans. Half of white non-Hispanic Catholics, plus three in 10 unaffiliated with a religion and a third of Jews, support the Republican Party -- all up since 2008.

The poll, overseen by Princeton Survey Research Associates International, involved landline and cellphone interviews with 3,003 randomly chosen adults. It was conducted July 21-Aug. 5 and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.

Obama is no christian or muslim. I am guessing if he has any belief in the supernatural, it's most likely Judaic mysticism - kaballah.

Obama professed to be a Christian for at least 20 years, with Minister Wright, yet he left Wright's religion once elected, and he's also professed, indirectly to having been practicing as a muslim as a child. His "kissed" the King of Saudi Arabia's hand--expected actions for Musiims, when faced with the recognized leader of Islam, and also quoted the "beautiful words of the Quoran" as someone who'd studied the well, and often. He also told the world that the UnitedStates was "no longer a Christian Nation"; not something that a practicing Christian, or any other Amercan President has had the "audacity to say". (especially when it's also not true). Oh yes, and then there was the comment that said in so many words that if push came to shove, he'd been on the side of Islam. That's pretty much a profession of faith, don't you think?

1 in 5 people must watch a lot of FOX news. Actually I doubt Barack is real Christian or any other religion. Seems to me his faith is placed in the world and people.

It's strange that the liberals on this forum state that Obama's religion is irrelevant and they are right. However, in recent Canadian elections these same liberals and the press have gone out of their way to portray any conservative who professed to be a Christian as automatically being a narrow-minded bigot with a hidden agenda. So which way is it folks? Relevant or not? You can't have it both ways!

What does it really matter WHAT religion he practises? Isn't America the "Land of the Free?" Is someone going around asking average citizens what THEIR religion is?

Who cares what his religion is. Just because some muslims are terrorist, does not mean we have to hate them all. If I remember right, Timothy McVae was Christian was he not? Are we going to debate if a Christian should run the White House? It is time to start worrying about other things in life that are important like family, friends, school, luxuries of life for those who have them. The more we debate issues like this, the more I can understand how this world is really full of idiots with nothing better to do.

Why would anyone be surprised that some think he is Muslim? There are those who are still convinced he was not born in America ! Obamas biggest sin, is he is not a middle aged white man. The United States of America....is anything but united....the country is imploding , race ,bigotry, and fear mongering, and just plain bull crap media reports, are bringing to the forefront, all the nasty ,half hidden hate that is eating away at everything America is supposed to stand for. What was once, perceived by most of the world as a super power, has now lost most of its credibility. It shouldn't matter if the leader of their country is purple ,and wicken....but it does. Ignorance may succeed, where many an army has failed.

I do not believe that he is a Muslim. But why does this even matter? Would that make him a worse person or a lesser president? Whoever said that Christians or any other people of other faiths make better presidents? From Obama's comments, it is obvious that he is defending the constitution and what the US forefathers had originally laid out. Freedom to practice religion.

He identifies with christianity, but I think it's fairly clear that he is a closet atheist. I don't mind that he hides this so much. Polls show that atheists are the most unelectable minority in the USA.

Cue the 'All Americans are idiots' brigade. Please, people - If you interviewed Canadians about our political leaders (or even who is leader of what, or what they do/titles they hold) you'd find just as much ignorance. Why, I've met people who don't even know who our prime minister is (except they called him our 'president'). Those in glass houses...

Whatever Obama believes, from what he has done so far it has nothing to do for the good of the country of America. In fact he sort of reminds me of Brown from the UK. Both these fellows tell you one thing then do another! At least in Canada we have Harper, who as far as I am concerned does his best to do what he said, with no mistake on what religion he is comming from. Now religion aside. How the heck did Obama become president if he wasn't born in America?

Stu from London

A person's religion should have absolutely no bearing as to whether or not a person can become the President of the United States, or the Prime Minister of Canada. I don't care if somone is an atheist, agnostic, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Wiccan, whatever...as long as they have the stuff to lead, and there values and goals reflect mine, I will support them. Unfortunately, BHO is not much of a leader. I give him credit though, he does what he wants regardless of the criticism.

For all the times Pye Chartt has complained about the left-wingers who sretch topics to make them political, I would say he has reached a new low with his comment to this article. Editors, how could you ever agree that comments about whether or not our prime mininster is dictatorial should be accepted as being related to Obama's religion? Having said that, I'll be happy to stick to his topic. Any logically minded person will know that a dictator, by definition, it a leader who "calls the shots." Prime ministers, in the past, have been leaders who, at minimum, developed a consensus within their own party. In the past, PM's have been able to govern and stay at 'arms-length' from the RCMP, the Supreme Court and untold other quasi-government departments. As I recall when Liberal PM's made appointmaents to the various boards and departments, that alone was enough to have right-wing neoCons calling foul interference. Just think what they would have said if Chretien and others would have been involved in the day-to-day operation the way King Steve is involved. What a prime minister can control, related to various departments and agencies, according to the law, and what past prime minister have controlled, are two very different things. Our present prime minister is taking new steps, almost daily, in moving closer to the limit of the law, regarding interference. Is he a dictator? He is much closer to one than the majority of Canadians want.Is Obama a Muslim? From everything I have read, it is the crazed Anne Coulter and other neoCons who are pushing that view. As most Canadians know, you should never believe a neoCon because they are alwys telling the story to suit their own agenda.

To Doug4711, typical holier than though Liberal mentality. Do you know for sure what his religion is? Isn't there a possibility that there could be those who, after reading all the conficting information, aren't sure and maybe even think that he's a muslim. So they have a different opinion than you and that makes them Republican idiots? The man's father was a muslim. His middle name is Hussein and he spent many childhood years in a muslim country. But hey if that creates doubt in some people's mind then they simply must be knuckle dragging neanderthal Conservatives, right?

That's actually a pretty funny statistic. I suppose Obama will have to do another media blitz to educate everyone. What does his religion have to do with his job anyway? And Pye Chartt has a valid point about the more liberal posters and their highly ignorant accusations about Harper being a dictator. How exactly can a Prime Minister in a minority parliament be a dictator? The only logical assumption one can make is that it only occurs if the other parties are lead by cowards.

The real question that should be asked is "So what if he's Muslim?" (even though it's false). Is there something inherently dangerous or sinister about being a Muslim? If you replace the word "Muslim" with "Christian" or "Jewish", maybe people would realize that his actions would speak louder than any organization he's affiliated with. Unfortunately for the POTUS, right now that track record is iffy.

Paul

He is a catholic, part of the Jesuit order. That is why his early career was all working for the Catholic Church. And so is his wife. She is actually a Cloistered nun. Just look at the pictures of her when she met the pope, she was wearing the cloistered nun outfit right down to the black veil.

In all seriousness, it's no wonder they don't know his true religion. There have been so many reports on his parents' religion, where he grew up, etc. It's been reported that his father was a muslim and mother Christian. Most males in the muslim community call the shots, so it's highly possible that he is a muslim. Only he and Allah know for sure I guess..

Yeah; and most nutty Liberal supporters, who don't understand that even in a parliamentary minority government the PM gets to call the shots, not the vocal and whiney Opposition, think that Stephen Harper is a "dictator."
