Palin once blessed to be free from 'witchcraft'

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A grainy YouTube video surfaced Wednesday showing Sarah Palin being blessed in her hometown church three years ago by a Kenyan pastor who prayed for her protection from "witchcraft" as she prepared to seek higher office.

The video shows Palin standing before Bishop Thomas Muthee in the pulpit of the Wasilla Assembly of God church, holding her hands open as he asked Jesus Christ to keep her safe from "every form of witchcraft."

"Come on, talk to God about this woman. We declare, save her from Satan," Muthee said as two attendants placed their hands on Palin's shoulders. "Make her way my God. Bring finances her way even for the campaign in the name of Jesus. ... Use her to turn this nation the other way around."

Palin filed campaign papers a few months later, in October 2005, and was elected governor the next year.

Palin does not say anything on the video and keeps her head bowed throughout the blessing. The Republican vice presidential candidate was baptized at the church but stopped attending regularly in 2002.

A spokesman for the McCain campaign declined to comment. A person who answered the phone at the Wasilla church confirmed the video was from May 2005 but declined further comment.

Palin was baptized Roman Catholic as a newborn.

Pentecostals are conservative in their reading of the Bible. Unlike most other Christians - including most evangelicals -- Pentecostals believe in "baptism in the Holy Spirit." That can manifest itself through speaking in tongues, modern-day prophesy and faith healing, which includes the laying on of hands.

Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for the McCain-Palin campaign, has said Palin attends different churches and does not consider herself Pentecostal.

On a visit to the church in June 2008, Palin spoke fondly of the Kenyan pastor and told a group of young missionaries that Muthee's prayers had helped her to become governor.

"Pastor Muthee was here and he was praying over me, and you know how he speaks and he's so bold," she said. "And he was praying 'Lord make a way, Lord make a way' ... He said, 'Lord make a way and let her do this next step.' And that's exactly what happened."

The Rev. Zipporah Ndiritu, who studied under Muthee in the Kiambu, Kenya-based Word of Faith Church, said the bishop is revered among evangelicals there. In a phone interview from Mombasa, Kenya, she said church doctrine focuses on ridding the world of demons - and witches.

"Even in the days of Jesus Christ, according to the Bible there were witches who were manifesting through demonic forces," she said. "You can seek from the Lord, and if you find demonic forces you cast them out."

Ndiritu said she did not know Palin.

...Wow, just because she was prayed upon she's a freak of nature. On what basis and argument can you call someone a freak of nature. Can you say to yourself you're perfect?..I guess the "respectable" guys in Wall Street", who worships the god of money, they're the perfect and admirable human beings and not freaks. Hmmm, wonder what's happening to Wall Street now.

This woman is a throwback to Spanish Inquisition and Joan D'arc. She will send the USA into the same state that Iran and other Moslem clercics have done. Do what you want and blame it on the will of God if it does not work.If things do work out you both take credit for it.

Okay, she's been blessed to be free of witchcraft.

But is she?

How do we know that Palin isn't still possessed by Satan? If the preacher saw something deamonic in her, then maybe it's still there.

I was going to vote for her, but now I'm having second thoughts. Bush seems to have been possessed for the last eight years- maybe Satan has moved on to Palin as a way of controlling America.

Republican evangelicals take note- if you vote for the McCain -Palin ticket, YOU MAY BE VOTING FOR SATAN!

There is no scandal here. Just because this lady follows one particular or many faiths does not mean anything. We have a right in Canada and the USA to choose what faith, if any, we follow. The benifits of living in a free society...unless it does not meet our personal standards eh.

I understand that many religious people are okay with people protecting themselves from witches. What I don't understand is the hatred that they have also expressed in their comments.

This woman got her first passport in 2007. She also thinks that god is on America's side in relation to the Iraq war.

John McCain is old enough to plausibly croak. This woman could be running the show in the USA in the not too distant future, with all those nice little red buttons in front of her to push.

Be afraid...

It's time to wake up and put the boots to this right wing mindset people. We've got money flying out the door to pay for unjust wars while the economy tanks in our midst. Religious nutcases and war mongering, xenophobic christian fundamentalist psychopaths are increasingly taking control.

Things really need to swing back in the other direction for awhile, this situation is getting way too dangerous. In the upcoming election, vote for anything that doesn't head remotely in the direction of what Sarah Palin represents!

What's she got against witches?

They're GREEN! (and not just their skin)
THAT’S why!

Think about it... their primary mode of transportation is 0 emissions. They are actually THE solution to the whole oil debacle that not only the US, but the whole world is in. ...

Who cares? If she was blessed to not have VD would it matter?

It's hard to believe what passes for news these days.

We need more Scientologists, hypocrites and satan worshippers in this world, and not Jesus. That would make too much sense.

While the whole world is worried about IRAN getting nuclear weapons, Palin is probably planning to bomb the UK to eliminate the evil forces of Harry Potter.

This women must be evil. She's the mother of 5, governor of the largest (geographical) state in the union and if need be, can pick up a rifle, go into the woods and harvest food for her family. Although, sounds kind of liberated to me.
I wonder how many pant-suited "feminists" could or would do the same.

Why can't we just let the poor witches fly around on their brooms? No, we have to let our lipstick-laden pit bulls at them and burn 'em alive at the stake...

If we knew we can have separation of state and religion, who cares? Problem is, we can't really seem to trust our politicos to do that.

This news will play out really well in the Bible Belt. On the positive side, she's already been exorcised which is more than I can say for G Gubya and his cronies.

another comment, she is quite young isnt she? 2002 was 6 years ago. didnt we all do goofy things when we were younger in our journeys of finding ourselves? why does it have to haunt her the rest of her born days? even the Pope himself was in the Hitler youth, yet he was still elected the Pope. show some tolerance folks. Perhaps the fact that she is a woman scares people, particularly men, the most?? think about it. What has Obama said that is so darned earth shattering and intelligent and strategic. Someone else clearly is speaking for him behind the scenes. but that is politics, right? That is what I always liked about Trudeau, arrogant yes, but you always knew it was him speaking not his minions, fuddle duddle and all. lol

Actually, seeing as she doesn't have to run against Hillary, I would say it has worked. :)

It was the priest's choice to bless her that way, should I assume that those who object would rather the priest said the opposite? It's a far cry from Obama's spending 20 years at the feet of a pastor yelling out 'God D*mn America'.

Witchcraft is real. It exists eveywhere including Toronto and the rest of Canada. Good & Evil are part of the world we live. Violence is increasing. Wars, Earthquakes. It alls Withcraft - Some call it "Spiritual Warfare" . This is not a joke. Witchcraft is real. It does not always come in physical form. It comes is emotions as well. Many people are possessed by it. Look Around you are passing it in your everyday life. Poverty is an example of it.

While I agree this is a non-story and is kinda silly considering the Prominence of Bonesmen in government and the powerful positions they have held for the last 100 or more years.

I still think she was a bad pick (democrat or Republican). She may sound confident but I do not see her in a leadership capacity anytime soon. Romney would have been a solid pick but the Christian wingnuts would have never let that fly.

Why is this a headline issue?

Simple. It speaks to her character (or lack thereof). Remember the Reagan's got advice from astrologers, so what's the problem?

Okay, you got me. How about I suggest a new nickname for her, short for will be "3P for "Praise the lord and Pass the ammo Palin". First up on her plan as VP: hunt down vampires, warewolves, witches, and worlocks kind of like a born-again Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

He, she herself said she had no clue what a VP did.

for the record I am a practicing Roman Catholic - I would like to say this, you know, if she had taken part in some kind of religious ceremony that was jewish or muslim I wonder if there would be all this hoopla or if people would dare criticize it for fear of being racist. people are so freaking narrow minded. unless she has murdered puppies I dont need to know about this. frankly why do we give a rats __ss about this, this is Canada not the 51st state. As a comment, McCain is such a old looking fuddy duddy I can see why he got a young hottie to be next in line to strengthen his image, I dont blame him, that is how elections are won.

Ummm So what? She has faith. Its amazing the lengths the left will go to criticize this woman. Senator Obama had a 20 year relationship with a church and pastor who can only be described as militant. Only after media scrutiny did he "distance" himself from the man.

McKenzie King talked to his dog. He led us through the Second World War.

History is full of figures with eccentricities and strange beliefs. It never affected their ability to lead nations...

It is unfortunate that the media has nothing better to do than dig up dirt on anyone who runs for office. How about finding some positives about people instead. The world would be much better if we would all act and behave in a courteous manner and have faith in each other. I will say that I wouldn't vote for her but that is because of her lack of experience, not anything to do with her personal life. Also, I believe that McCain is just using her as a pawn to gain the religious right wing female vote as well. She has no experience in world matters let alone any time in and around the Washington D.C. area. On the other hand, maybe that's not all bad?
