MacKay worried Taliban receiving weapons from Iran

Defence Minister Peter MacKay, in Afghanistan spending Christmas with Canadian soldiers, says he is concerned about weapons "coming in from Iran" for the Taliban.
MacKay and Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Rick Hillier arrived at Kandahar Air Field on Monday. Their arrival was kept quiet until Tuesday for security reasons.
MacKay told reporters that he was concerned that Iran has been providing insurgents with improvised explosive devices.
Afghanistan has "very negative influences coming in from other countries -- Pakistan, certainly Iran in particular," he said.
"We're very concerned that weapons are coming in from Iran, we're very concerned these weapons are going to the insurgents and keeping this issue alive."
MacKay said Canada has approached the Iranian government numerous times about the issue.
Most of Canada's 73 combat deaths since 2002 have resulted from roadside IEDs and not combat.
CTV's Murray Oliver, reporting from Kandahar, said it was the first time a high-ranking Canadian official has identified Iran as helping the Taliban.
"It was really surprising to hear Iran singled out so strongly by the defence minister as a country that is contributing to the harm of Canadian troops," Oliver told CTV Newsnet. "I think we are going to hear a lot more about this Iran-Taliban connection in the coming weeks."
The alliance is surprising considering the Taliban were mortal enemies with Iran while they were in government, he said.
"Of course, as the saying goes, 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend,'" Oliver said.
David Wilkins, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, traveled with MacKay and Hillier during their trip.
"Certainly the Americans have been sending out messages recently that they believe there is much more Iranian involvement in Afghanistan than has been widely reported," Oliver said.
But he also noted that NATO officials think that any Iranian assistance might not be coming from the government itself, but factions within the government. If true, that would make a diplomatic solution more complex, Oliver said.
Christmas dinner
On Monday, MacKay and Hillier spent the day visiting troops at forward operating bases.
The pair joined about 1,000 soldiers for Christmas dinner at the airfield on Tuesday.
Oliver said the mood at the dinner was upbeat and that Hillier remains enormously popular with Canadian soldiers. "The troops genuinely admire him and like him," he said. "His popularity really helped to lift the mood at the dinner."
At the dinner, MacKay told the troops they were giving Afghanistan a wonderful gift.
"What greater gift could we ever bring to a people, to a country, than peace and security and a quality of life, and a beautiful expectation that families, children can grow up and achieve their dreams," he said.
Oliver said the message to the troops at the dinner was that "Canada loves you, Canada supports you and we all admire the work that you're doing.
"Which is generally true ... although, of course, polls have shown that support for the mission in Canada is slipping," he said.
Oliver also said despite the holiday celebrations, it's not a happy time for Canada's mission.
"This is the bloodiest year for Canada's Armed Forces since this mission began," he said, adding that development assistance for Afghans is also proceeding slowly.
Harper's message
In his annual Christmas message, Prime Minister Stephen Harper used the Afghan mission as a symbol of what's great about Canada.
"Of all the joys of the season, perhaps none is more satisfying than the joy of giving. Not just the gifts exchanged between family and friends, but the gifts of time, money and effort many give to people less fortunate than ourselves," he said.
"That spirit of generosity is one of the things that defines us as Canadians and its purest expression today is the Canadian mission in Afghanistan, where our soldiers, diplomats and aid workers are, at great cost to themselves helping the Afghan people rebuild their shattered country."

Gimme a break about the Iranian connection, what a convenient statement to make. A proof is proof.

And kudos to the leadership for being there when the troops need it. Yes, Stan, the military is made up of volunteers...that is precisely WHY they should be thanked for doing something for which you obviously wouldn't: helping others to improve their lot in life. As for "Not so proud...", since when is it destructive to help and rebuild? Maybe there's not as much rebuilding as we'd like, but you have to create some stability before you can rebuild. Keep up the good work, troops!

Just last week, ALL the intelligence agencies in the USA stated it findings that the whole Iran nuclear weapon program deal has been blown way, way out of proportion. Peter Mackay and politicians like him are Canada's version of John Bolton and Dick Cheney - DON'T TRUST HIM
You don't support troops by feeding them nonsense that can draw Canada into further needless and deadly conflict situations down the road...

If Iran supplies them with weapons, the Taliban kill western soldiers (and civilians), saving Iran the trouble of having to do it themselves... not to mention the sheer politics of the situation would demand Iran keep as clean as possible in the whole debacle.

If I could give anyone on earth anything,I would most like our men and women in Afganistan to have the Christmas I'm able to have.
I can only hope that they truely take satisfaction in knowing they are working for a world which allows the people of Afganistan the same rights and freedoms that Canadians so often don't appreciate.
My parents served in Europe in the 1940's.I'll never forget their stories about how the people in the Netherlands, and in Italy treated them like kings. And how Polish people honoured the widow of an RCAF pilot, whose remains were finally found after all these years.
God bless ALL the brave Canadians who actually DO THE WORK that gets our country respect on the world stage.May you all have the Best Christmas that circumstances allow.I hope you can all come home safely. In the mean time,I urge Canadians to offer the best support possible for the families of those who serve us.They too, have shown amazing resolve in difficult times.
And yes,I applaud Peter McKay and General Hillier.Visiting our troops is always a good thing. To sacrifice A Christmas with your families,to support our people,is a step up in both class and dedication.
And no,I do not trust Iran. They are still mad at us about the 1980's American Embassy thing.I want more evidence if they suggest they want peaceful relations with any western country.
""Trust,but verify" seems appropriate.

"As the people of Holland still thank Canadians today for liberating them from harms way . . . "
As a person who was born in Holland, and made Canada my home and my country since 1954, I still often thank Canadian veterans, especially around Remembrance Day.
Knowing what it means to be liberated by Canadians, I am fully in support of the current Afghanistan mission.
To our government: Thank you for being leaders!
To all our service women and men: THANK YOU! and a Blessed Christmas!

Since the US' NIE (National Intellegence Estimate) last month saying that Iran had ceased nuclear weapons research back in 2003 the option of bombing the crap out of Iran had been pushed off the table (rhetoric was too remenicient of the WMD goose-chase/fiasco in Iraq). World war 3 overted, or delayed...for now.
The rally cry has been sounded France and Italy have repledged support. Maybe the rest of NATO will finally come to their senses, stop screwing around, and see the value in what the heavy lifters (Canada, Netherlands, Australia, UK and US) have been dying for.
My prayers go out to our Guys & Gals in Afghanistan, Haiti and everywhere else overseas fighing the good fight on Canada's behalf so far away from home; trying to preserve peace on earth and offering good will towards men. We're forever proud of you; do your best, stay safe and come home to us soon.

I am also glad MacKay had the courage to speak the truth about Iran's involvement. It is reassuring to know our Government is dealing directly with the issue rather than hushing it up and playing games with the lives of our soldiers.

As for the Iran connection and supplying weapons to Afghan insurgents I was wondering when Canada was going to stand up and say something about this well-documented fact. How many times does Iran have to be caught doing this before something is said about it.

Having been deployed over Xmas it is always nice to see our senior leaders taking time away from their families to spend with the troops. Having said that, the recent outpouring of support from the Cdn. public brought me more cheer than the "obligatory" visit from the CDS. Either way, the bonding that happens amongst deployed troops cannot really be understood by the general public and the support shown by you really helps more than you can imagine.
