A fireball shoots across downtown Edmonton is this image taken from video sent to CTV Edmonton by Andrew Bartlet, late Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008. CTV Edmonton security cameras caught the meteor approach and then create a massive flash in the skyline on Thursday evening, Nov. 20, 2008. Amateur astronomer Alister Ling, based in southwest Edmonton, captured a bright flash in the sky from a camera that constantly monitors the sky. A CTV map details the area of western Canada where the flash was reportedly visible.

Researchers say the fireball that blazed across the Prairie sky Thursday evening was most likely a meteor, but expert's opinions about where - and if - the galactic object hit the Earth are divided.

Hundreds of residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba reported seeing the bright light, which was also captured on security cameras.

The stunning images show the sky light up as a bright point of light blazes into view, then disappears over the horizon.

Paul Delaney, an astronomer from York University, said the object was a meteor that was "cruising through the upper atmosphere, giving us a wonderful lightshow, telling us of course that you should always be outside looking up."

He said the meteor may have disintegrated prior to reaching the ground. But if it is found, it could offer a fascinating look into the history of the solar system.

"It's a wonderful laboratory," he told CTV Newsnet.

"This is a piece of our past. You're talking about an object that potentially is four-and-a-half billion years old, telling us all about the local environment in our solar system as the solar system was forming.

Even more fascinating, he said, is if the meteor turns out to be a piece of another planet, such as Mars.

"Meteors get blasted off the surfaces of old planets in our solar system, terrestrial planets, and they come to Earth," he said.

Randy Atwood, a space educator, told CTV's Canada AM the meteor was probably no bigger than a grapefruit, and may have broken into small pieces before hitting the ground, or it may have burned up entirely before touching down.

He agreed there may not be much of it left, saying it was travelling at incredible speeds when it was spotted.

"There's a very good chance it was what we call a bolide, which is a meteorite crossing the sky at extremely quick velocity -- very, very fast -- and as it hits the atmosphere at about 400,000 feet, travelling at about 60 kilometres per second, this is the incredible light show that it creates," said Atwood.

Still, not all experts agree.

Alan Hildebrand, a planetary scientist from the University of Calgary, said the meteorite likely smashed into the ground near Macklin, Sask., which is about 100 kilometres south of the Alberta border town of Lloydminster.

In fact, Hildebrand is so sure of his hypothesis that he plans to spend his weekend searching for rock remnants around in the area.

"Right now, the important thing is not searching because we don't know which field to search in. It's a big world," Hildebrand told The Canadian Press. "What's important now is finding proximal eyewitnesses, so you know where meteorites might have fallen."

Astronomers and universities across Western Canada have cameras recording activity in the sky, Atwood said. If the meteor was captured by more than one of the cameras, it may be possible over the next couple of days to triangulate exactly where it touched down -- if it did.

CTV's Mike Ciona, a Saskatoon reporter who saw the sky light up on his way home from work, said it appeared to be positioned to the west and north of the city.

"It looked like a lighting bolt, the most intense lighting bolt you've ever seen, and maybe the size of three," Ciona told Canada AM.

Phone lines at CTV began to light up just minutes after the event, with residents seeking more information on what happened.

CTV Saskatoon fielded roughly 60 calls, Ciona said.

"It seemed the most intense areas where it was being reported was in the west-central part of Saskatchewan and the east-central part of Alberta, with the most intense reports coming in from Melfort, Saskatchewan and Lloydminster...and right at Red Pheasant First Nation," Ciona said.

MyNews user Dan Charrois, who lives about 50 kilometres north of Edmonton, said security cameras set up at his home managed to capture some grainy footage showing a big flare in the night sky.

"It happened so fast I don't think anyone would have had the reaction time to get it," he told CTV.ca, adding that his computer software business has written programs that track meteors.

Though Charrois didn't see the fireball himself, he decided to check the security tapes after his friends and neighbours called him to find out where the light may have came from.

"I only had to rewind a couple of minutes and it was there," he said, noting the security time stamped the flash at 5:26 p.m. local time.

"You kind of see a flash, which lasts about two seconds or so," he said.

Lets get a comment here by a reputable scientist...these events clearly aren't meteors, they're folks from other worlds coming to visit. Just because we perceive their presence as a "streak of light" doesn't mean they're not real.

Hi my name is Sandi Daniels and I am from Cumberland House Saskatchewan. My family and I were driving around the community last night and had stopped at a stop sign when one of my family members saw something in the sky. I looked and we saw a very bright light that lit up half of the sky for a few seconds. We caught the very end tail of it. It looked like the burning of an ember just before it flcikers out, it was just above the trees and then it was gone. We notified the local R.C.M.P as it really did look like something had hit very close. Was there only one meteor or were there more? It's just that it seemed so close to us, but yet again isn't that what everyone is saying. If anyone is looking for it? do you think they will find anything, because I saw the video that Andy Bartlett had posted and it looks like it burnt up before touching ground. Either way that is the most amazing thing I have ever seen and probably ever will in my life time.

I was putting up Christmas lights south of Medicine Hat, when I saw this fire ball getting larger and larger, everyone seems to be thinking it was in the North but it looked like to me it came from the South heading North, the entire house lit up and went right over the city heading North East, then about 5 to 10 seconds later there was a massive flash. This is the second one I have seen, about 20 years ago we saw one working on the farm, lit up the entire farm it came from west to east and hit somewhere in Sask. Again with a huge tail of fire and then a massive flash. You never forget those things.

It was really cool! I actually was driving on the highway between Rosetown and Kindersly and seen a fireball hit the ground just outside of the town of Brock right after the flash of light in the sky. It was only a couple of hundred yards away.

I am a long haul truck driver and I was proceeding eastbound on Highway No. 7 about a kilometer and a half before Brock, Saskatchewan. The sky ablsolutely lit up in a bright orange-reddish-white fashion. I turned my head and looked out my driver's door window and saw an object in flames with a wispy white smoke trail behind it hit the ground. It hit on the north side of the Trans Canada in a field. According to the news reports, they do not know where it is located. I believe I could walk in and find the exact spot where it landed. Afterwards I thought, "Man, that thing nearly took me out!!!"

I was driving on hi-way 40 travelling east from Cut Knife, when the sky lit up for more than 5 seconds. I looked north and the meteor looked like it was at least 5 kms away. I saw it fizzle out before it hit the ground. I didn't feel any kind of crash. It did leave behind a long trail of smoke. I would have to guess that it may have landed somewhere between hi-way 16 and hi-way 40 and not as far west as Lloydminister.

You would think that there would have been a jet or plane close to where the meteor struck and with all the devices they have on board, pretty well determine the exact location of where it went down.

Bush and hills were to the right of me as I drove north slowly pulling a grainauger down a dark backroad last night around 6:30 p.m. There was no traffic and the nearest farm house was about 3 miles away. Then the sky and surroundings started to light up. It was so intense I could have read a newspaper inside the cab of my truck. I stopped my trucking thinking I was going to get hit by a jet. The rumbling sort of stopped and as I looked out my drivers window facing west I saw the back end of a huge yellow ball of light with a distinct red center and a long tail. I've seen lots of falling stars but this one looked like a comet even though it only lasted a few seconds and ended with a drop similar to a falling star only with a sunset glow and a few sparks. I could have drawn a line in the horizon as the trail of smoke seemed to linger for almost half an hour. It was about 5 degrees north of were I was and headed to the south East of North Battleford towards Provost A.B.

The earth is not billions of years old folks.... there is absolutely no evidentiary facts to support an age of billions of years. There is evidence to support possibly ten thousand years old using tried and proven techniques of age dating. Other methods are inaccurate and yet those numbers are used freely without factual support. So you're not as old as you look world!

We watched a a guy with porcelain white skin streak across the road for about 5 seconds. Three days after it was repeated again with the same results! Now when crossing streets I often look left and right for streakers as it is so much fun. I'm just glad I don't see them at home.

I believe that my wife and I saw a smaller event. After reviewing all the news and others comments, I believe that it did blow up and what we saw was a chunk falling to the earth. We were driving south towards Kindersley when we saw the the sky light up like day time. To the north of us we saw a medicine ball size fire ball crashing to the earth with a green luminicant glow around it. It was so close we could see chunks of smaller fire balls the size of baseballs falling off it before it burnt out about 40 feet before the ground. After seeing some other footage the one we saw was amazing but not nearly as amazing as what we have seen on the net or TV. We had to see falling debris from the larger meteor.

Last night around 5:30 PM, I was driving on the way home on an old highway near Colinton Road. It was so fast when it was happening. At first I thought it was a lighting that was brighten up in the sky. It turned out it was a fireball. It was like a very very hot and huge red surface ball was fallen down to the earth from the sky. It is like 20-30 second that was falling straight down. It was so beautiful. I believed that was a fire ball. It probably have landed somewhere in the Colinton area, but I am not too sure.
It was on the east of Coliton where I spotted the fireball.

It was a very first hand experience to see like this.

I was driving just north of Saskatoon, as well. An incredible thing to see. I was also looking for a mushroom cloud. I didn't think anything but a nuke could cause that degree of light and flash. It went from dark to day and back. If that was the size of a grapefruit, and the four western provinces seen it, I'd hate to see what one the size of a car could do. Glad to be apart of it.
