Canadians will go to the polls on Oct. 14, after Conservative Leader Stephen Harper met with Governor General Michaelle Jean Sunday morning and asked her to dissolve Parliament.

"Between now and Oct. 14, Canadians will choose a government to look out for their interests at a time of global economic trouble," Harper told reporters on Sunday after he triggered the vote.

"They will choose between direction or uncertainty; between common sense or risky experiments; between steadiness or recklessness."

Harper said his government delivered on its commitments and developed consensus on major issues such as the mission in Afghanistan and Indian residential schools.

"But now we have come to a moment where the people of Canada have to choose the way forward."

Hours later, Harper began his campaign in Quebec City, telling supporters that the Bloc Quebecois was no longer relevant and it was the Conservatives -- not the Bloc -- who had succeeded in recognizing the province as a nation.

"I remember when the Bloc arrived in Ottawa requesting four years to create Quebec sovereignty. That was 18 years ago," he said.

"Eighteen years later, the Bloc is still there, and still doesn't have sovereignty. Dear friends, in two-and-a-half years we have achieved concrete results for Quebecers."

Meanwhile, the opposition leaders wasted no time reacting to Harper's election call:

  • Liberal Leader Stephane Dion called the election a "stark choice" between his party and  "most Conservative government in our history"
  • Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe called Harper's vision "illogical and inspired by (U.S. President) George W. Bush."
  • NDP Leader Jack Layton  -- perhaps trying to echoe U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama -- said his party offered real change,  " instead of Mr. Harper's approach"
  • Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said the "our species stands on a precipice on this planet" and urged people to embrace her party's vision

At dissolution, the party standings in the 308-seat House of Commons are as follows:

  • Conservatives - 127
  • Liberals - 95
  • Bloc Quebecois - 48
  • NDP - 30
  • Independent - 4
  • Vacant - 4

One of the Independents, Blair Wilson of B.C., announced last weekend he is now a Green MP.

Harper identified the Liberal party as his principal opposition, although the NDP has ignored the Liberals in the early going and tried to position itself as the progressive alternative to the Tories.

Harper noted that there are four parties on the left looking for support, and said his party was the choice of centre and right voters.

Nasty campaign?

In an exclusive interview aired today on CTV's Question Period, Harper  said he expects a nasty election campaign.

"To be really honest, I anticipate a very nasty, kind of personal-attack campaign," he told Lloyd Robertson, CTV's chief news anchor and senior news editor, taped Saturday at Harrington Lake.

"That's just what I'm anticipating; that's what the opposition has done in the past. I think that whether Canadians agree with what we're doing or not, I don't think they're going to believe the kind of personal attacks and scare tactics that we've seen in the past."

The Tories have made Harper the centrepiece of their campaign, and the NDP have aimed their initial ads at Harper.

On Sunday, Harper told his news conference that he wouldn't be getting nasty with the other leaders.

"I have good relations with most of the other leaders and I respect all of them as individuals and as political adversaries," he said.

"We disagree. I think we have lots of scope in this election to go after the positions these leaders have taken.

"The Liberal Party, is running on a policy, a tax increase, a carbon tax (that) it doesn't want to talk about. So, I think that's why they are going to spend our time attacking us and attacking me personally. Certainly, that's been the tenor of the last few months of Parliament, so that's what I expect we'll have more of," Harper said.

Early election call

The election writ was dropped despite the Conservative Party's own legislation that set a fixed election date for October 2009.

Critics have charged the Tories of breaking their own law for political gain, and Sunday morning the Liberal Party issued a press release on the matter, under the subject header "Conservative Broken Platform Promise of the Day."

"(Harper) is the one who brought in the law ... and then just threw it out," former Liberal cabinet minister Sheila Copps told CTV Newsnet Sunday morning from Ottawa.

The NDP said the election call raises key issues that will be central in the campaign.

"It's another example of how Mr. Harper can't be trusted, and I think this is a good opportunity to take a look at leadership in this campaign," NDP strategist Brad Lavigne said.

Although the election call had been widely anticipated for several weeks, there were questions Sunday about the readiness of Stephane Dion's Liberals.

The Liberals' election plane is not expected to be ready until near the end of the week, and Dion will reportedly travel by bus for the first few days of the campaign. The Conservatives claimed that's a blunder which raises questions about his leadership and organizational skills.

Copps said the Liberals are ready for a tough election fight and local candidates across the country are fully prepared.

"People's expectations of Mr. Dion have been driven into the ground by Mr. Harper's negative ad campaigns," Copps said, noting that voters will get a different picture of the Liberal leader during the campaign.

Sorry, but I will be voting Conservative this election. Dion is a Jean Chretien "clone" and Layton is out of touch with reality and will never become PM. Ontario NDP leader Howard Hampton will never become Premier either. Does everyone remember Rae Days? The Liberals destroyed our once proud military with budget cuts and Layton wants to negotiate with confirmed terrorists! The Conservatives have done what they said they would do unlike the Liberals. Conservatives in 09!

I've read the "green shift". Not all that you read is true. Here is a direct quote a from another document that people thought was going to be a great thing.

"In proportion as the exploitation of one individual by another is put an end to, the exploitation of one nation by another will also be put an end to. In proportion as the antagonism between classes within the nation vanishes, the hostility of one nation to another will come to an end." Karl Marx..Communist Manifesto.

Sometimes things that people write with great intentions don't work! Dion and this tax is a blantant attempt to control with power and unlimited funds. He is always dragging the carrot in front of the citizens of Canada with the tax dollars made from our backs. No thanks. GO HARPER!!!

Now, please officially explain how my mother, who retired after contributing to building this great country, will find this Green Shift plan "revenue neutral"?
She now pays little income tax, but still needs to heat her home, fill her car with gas & maybe every few years fly somewhere to escape the snow.

Would Dion, as PM, prefer that she freeze in the dark?

Thank you Mr. Dion for attempting to shaft our parents and grandparents.

how laughable that hardcore conservatives like their republican friends in the Bush-McCain party blame the media for their own blunders. Conservatives are out of touch with real Canadians. Real Canadials want to protect the enviroment, care about the homeless and minorities, and do not want ideological religious nutcases imposing conservative social engineering on Canada's mainstream values.
Real Canadians are not happy with Dion's weak leadership though; they see through his anti-conservative rhetoric - while his party neglected their job as opposition party.
Real Canadians know and respect Jack Layton; comment him for being the REAL opposition party leader and will likely reward the NDP with a greater influence on parliament in the Oct. election

The liberals did'nt cut the GST because it was bad economics as Harper was told, it was strictly a political promise on Harpers part and not good public policy. How many jobs have been created with his tax cuts? not one. All you tax cutters, pay for your own health care, education, pensions, building infracture, military, the list is endless were tax money is spent. Take a look to see who has the highest standard of living in the world, it is not a low tax government. CHECK IT OUT FOLKS, Canada is a respected country globally and it was all done mostly under liberal governments. Global issues are very, very important in today's world and Harper has not done so well.

Hang on, because we're in for one big slide on the econmical side of things. High inflation, mild to medium recession and maybe even deflation. Unfortunately the govt has not positioned us well to weather the storm. Would the liberals do better? With Paul Martin gone, I say NO!. So the bottom line is I'm sitting this one out. Have you taken the time to read The Green Shift Plan? Here is a direct quote. I'm certain you will never find anything in the Conservative platform that presents as clear a view as to why they oppose this plan. They will attack by saying Dion wants to tax everything. Again the question needs to be asked... Who will get personal first? Who will attack with exaggerations and lies?

From the Green Shift Plan... "We will dramatically reduce other taxes, for individuals and for businesses. We will make sure that this dramatic tax shift is revenue neutral.

It cannot be, and we commit that it will not become, a tax grab by government. This commitment will be enshrined in legislation, and we will have the Auditor General look at the numbers and confirm this each and every year to Canadians.

But putting money back in the hands of Canadians is only part of the solution. Investing in renewable energy and conservation – helping families to use less and pay less – is also key to our plan. As part of our broader climate change plan, Canadians will have access to a full suite of programs to help them reduce their own carbon footprint and the pollution they produce.

This will allow Canadians to save even more money on their own energy costs, while helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution."

Thankyou Mr. Dion for taking a risk to show you care about the world of my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Just to set the record straight about the "secret" meeting between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico this meeting took place in March of 2005 under the leadership of Paul Martin (a.k.a. Mr. Dithers). Below is a paragraph from the article copy and pasted for reference and a link as well. I would think that it would be prudent to know your facts before opening your mouth.

At their meeting in Waco, Texas, at the end of March 2005, U.S. President George W. Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox, and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin committed their governments to a path of cooperation and joint action. We welcome this important development and offer this report to add urgency and specific recommendations to strengthen their efforts.

Again, more comments about Harper being friends with the U.S., our largest trading partner with whom we share continental defense & the world's longest undefended border.

Those admonishing our PM for having enough of a relationship with the U.S. president that the White House would actually take his phone call, please admit it: you long for the days when Liberal leaders were cozy with left wing dictatorships like the former USSR (Trudeau) or China & Cuba (Chretien). C'mon, 'fess up.

"Stephen Harper was the first non-Catholic PM elected since 1963 - 45 years ago. Is this the reason so many left wingers despise him?"

That comment doesn't make a lick of sense. Who identifies left of the spectrum politics with Catholicism?

I suspect that a lot of Canadians will be surprised at the result of this election. I recall watching the Liberal leadership race on tv and laughed when they selected Dion. "Well they'll never win now" I said to myself. However, when Dion spoke I was surprised at how effective he was. He came across as very intelligent. I don't think many Canadians have had a chance to witness this yet. I know I haven't seen that Dion since the leadership race. If he speaks like that again he may win some new votes. As an undecided voter I'm going to be listening to all these leaders carefully.

Something that I find sad about political affiliation is how many people automatically vote Conservative or Liberal (or NDP for that matter) without really thinking about their vote. I used to be like that but lately have become more contemplative about it. I consider my single vote to be quite valuable and a party has to earn it. No one is guaranteed my vote. I would encourage everyone to do that. Actually take the time to listen and decide how to vote based on the information you can find online. Don't simply vote for a party because that's what you've always done, or that's how your parents always voted, or that's how your neighbours always vote. The internet has given us an unparalleled medium for researching and comparing platforms. Use it.

Good luck Mr Harper. Let’s all hope the people of Ontario will wake up and vote to help themselves. Only a PC Government will do what is right and required, not just the easy road the Liberals took for a decade. Anyone who would consider Dion as good leader should take some time and really listen to him talk (in either official language). Mr Harper can and will lead this country, not just appease it as the Liberals always did. If you need proof, then take a look at our Military. Support our troops, support Canada, and vote PC.

So much doom and gloom!

Look on the bright side; no matter what party you belong to, you can work to get that party a majority.

If you are not willing to work for the party of your choice - or even vote, for that matter - you deserve the government others work and vote for.

The only thing that matters is that as many as possible go out and vote. It's better to have a minority government elected by 90% of the people than a majority elected by a mere 50%.

While the Reform/Conservatives often complain about the left leaning media, it was the media that gave the neocons their greatest push. Once the Alliance and the Progressive Conservatives amalgamated, the press was soon calling the new party, the Tories.
People, please wake up! Harper and his friends are not Tories. They are a new brand of conservative that previously, Canada has only seen in fringe parties.
Now Harper suggests that he knows this will become a personal, mud-slinging campaign. How dare he say that, after spending the past two years mocking, omitting details, twisting facts and telling outright lies about Dion.
NDP supporters, please notice that Harper does not attack Layton. That is only because he knows the NDP does not have a chance of winning.
As others have suggested, this may be the time for those who truly love Canada and the caring, peace-keeping image we have presented in the past, to consider an alliance. We cannot allow these people to hijack our government.
If you have studied Canada's history, you will know that confederation only took place because the Grits under George Brown, formed an alliance with the Tories, under John A. Macdonald.

All you Liberal supporters must really have your heads in the sand. There is just too much corruption in the Liberal party and they have no real plan.

Stephen Harper is the only leader in decades to really do what he said he would in the last election Campaign. You Liberals just don't want to admit it.

Chretien and Dion signed the Kyoto protocol and then sat on their hands and did nothing - oh sorry, the Liberals stole our hard earned money in adscam.

Oh, and Dion the environmental saviour using a 1979 plane to campaign with - one that spews twice as much pollution as the Conservative plane. Well that just speaks volumes. And his statement that he's buying carbon credits to offset it - what a bunch of hogwash.

And Dion in his infinite wisdom today told Canadians several times on network TV to go to greenshift.ca and see his 'plan'. Ya, that goes right to the company that is suing the Liberal Party for infringing on their trademark. Really ethical those Liberals. And Dion can't even say the right website address. And you Liberals want to put him in charge?

Good government is the result of thoughtful, logical, well informed people making collective decisions through the voting process.

The problem in Canada (and I am Canadian) is that too many people vote based on ideology or rely on superficial, but misleading and simplistic arguments (I am clearly referring to the NDP and Green party here) or try to win the 'popularity contest' with no principles at all (thats the Liberals and Bloc). Votes should be based on substance, economic impact or balancing of diverse interests, and policies must be feasible.

Get some education, and get your heads out of the clouds. The prosperity, security and standard of living of all Canadians and our children depends upon well thought out decisions, by people with your best interests at heart and the knowledge adn competence to act accordingly. Vote Conservative.

Thank the Lord!

Instead of more posturing in Parliament we can now put the maneuvering in it's proper perspective.

Based on the pattern of the last Parliament the Conservatives have already won this election, it's just a matter of totaling up votes now. Scenarios include:

1. Conservative Majority where real action can be taken toward progress.

2. Conservative Minority where a weakened, broke, lame-duck Liberal party allows the Conservatives to govern as if they have a majority.

3. Liberal Minority where a weakened, broke, lame-duck Liberal party allows the Conservatives to drive the course of government. This Government would be very short lived, perhaps not even making it through the winter. There exists a strong probability of the GG asking Harper to form a new Government after the 'leader' Dion falls flat on his face in an unstable coalition. The Libs then blindly support PM Harper because they can't afford another election.

Any way you look at it... PM Harper is keeping his job.

Bravo Zulu Mr. Harper!
Well played Sir!

It is really too bad that the Liberals elected Dion as their leader. But then they probably had little choice at the time. However, they will pay dearly for that mistake in this election. Once the election is over, I think Liberals should tell gentle man Dion to go and then elect another leader who is more capable of going for Harper's jugular. The Conservatives will sweep to victory this time around but, hopefully, with time, and when people see what Harper is REALLY about, Canada will be restored to sanity and balance.

"Carbon Tax neutral right. If gas goes up five cents and the average Canadian spends five thousand a year at well $1.20 a liter that is 4166 litres at five cents extra a litre. That is $2083.00 a year extra and that is only gas what about house heating food prices etc. The Liberal government is not going to give that back to me. Revenue neutral I don't thinks so." quoted from Ed.

This is getting more the impression it will end up with Obama and Harper as winners. Maybe Obama will slow down Harper's nerves and his far-right agenda.

Meanwhile Dion is pretty much starting his farewell tour as Liberal leader.

The best scenario for them is that probably it will only be a minority Tory government. They should hope that Obama continues to increase his electoral votes lead (314-224) over the GOP so that it will be favorable for the them.

Then after the election they will kick Dion out and put Iggy or Rae as next leader and then we will hear more details about the multiple Conservative scandals and then it will be another election in 2010.

Here he is blathering about the choice between common sense or risky experiments, steadiness or recklessness, but it was his own recklessness with public money that plunged us into a deficit for the first time in ten years! Talk about recklessness, and risky experiments.

Then to talk about personal attacks when his party has led a vicious Republican-style smear campaign against Dion from day one. I'm not even a Dion supporter but I'm just sickened by the Harper Tories' vindictive and personal smear attacks on Dion. Then Harper has the gall to point the finger at the Libs and claim they fight dirty?

Harper's Tories are the most obnoxious, arrogant, overbearing, mean-spirited government I've ever seen in Canada. I can't wait to see the last of them.

Harper is not a strong leader. You cannot lead a house divided, and Harper's conduct in office has been to further divide the house Canada.

We need a leader to help us find common ground again and foster the desire to live together. Harper is not that leader. He belongs to the 19th Century, and that is where he'll lead.

Dion is a HYPOCRITE. He is prepared to lecture Canadians on the environment using a 29 year old pollution-spewing jet to criss-cross across Canada. The jet is a former cargo plane that was first used by a cargo company. Then it was sold to Saudi state owned oil company Aramco, who used the jet for 20 years before selling it to a low-cost passenger airline, which then sold it to Air Inuit. The jet is now mostly chartered by the federal government from Air Inuit to evacuate First Nation people from the far north. The plane is 35% dirtier than the Conservative or NDP planes. The Conservatives and the NDP had their Air Canada Airbus planes ready for the past couple of months. The Liberals only secured their plane in the past week. It still won't be ready for a week. SHAME on Dion. SHAME on the Liberals. HYPOCRATES, HYPOCRATES, HYPOCRATES. Do as I say, not as I do.

My two cents.

I find it amusing that people always complain about politicians and their broken promises, like this is something new? For politicians the name of the game is to say what the people want to hear and then once elected go on with their respective agendas. Lets look at history and we will see that for the last 30 years, our politicans have said one thing and done another once they are in office. The way I see it, if I have food on my table a roof over my head and some left over to put in the bank, then I am a happy man. Until this edition of the ruling party makes a mess of this country why change? Lets see all parties work together to make Government work, then and only then can one make a choice about who to trust in leading our country!

John Carroll, Thank you, that is exactly what I have been saying to all my Liberal friends. For Harpers policy to work in a minority situation then there could be no such thing as a confidence motion.

I wonder if the Libs and the NDP supporters would have complained about the fixed election date if Dion or Layton had toppled the government.

Her is what all the Liberal and NDP members need to ask themselves. If Harper is doing such a bad job and hurting the country so much, why didn't the opposition topple him. IF they care so much about this country and stand by their ethics shouldn't they have toppled Harper. Or is it that all they care about is polling numbers and personal power.

Harper has had two opportunities during this Parliament where is polling numbers were near majority and he was taking hits from the opposition, he could have ended the session there but instead he said he was sent there to govern and he continued. Because of that I am willing to believe him when he says this Parliament just won't work.

Harper has shown himself to be a stronger, smarter and more patriotic Prime Minister. So every Liberal and NDP supporter who is complaining about some peice of legislation here is a question how can you vote for opposition parties that allowed this legislation to pass because they refused to stand by their beliefs and their ethics and vote no because the polling numbers were bad.

This country needs real leadership and Stephen Harper has provided it. This country has emerged from stagnation, corruption and arrogance after 13 years of Liberal rule.

A very scary double standard precedent and sad example has been set today: it is all right for the Prime Minister and the Governor General to break the law but if all other Canadians were to break any other law, we would be tried.
Should Canadians, and the whole world for that matter, understand that it is all right in Canada to break the elections legislation and to ask Canadians to do so as well on elections day, simply to serve the interests of a party who wants to stay in power? What about the interests of Canada as a whole? Parties started their campaign long before the elections were announced. What is the responsibility of Elections Canada if not to ensure that regulations are respected? Canada is often called upon as an observer for elections in third world countries. Parliament and other Canadian institutions should ensure the accountability of all our governing officials.

The fixed election date is applicable to all governments - minority or majority. Even a majority government can fall if it fails a confidance motion.

With that said we will all be in trouble if Harper gets to be a full fledged dictator with a majority. Say good bye to the rights of women, children, homosexuals, and every other minoriy race in Canada. If he wants to make a lay with fixed elections he should at least respect his own law. There was not lost confidance motion he just though he would try to get a majority dictatorship, i mean government. I don't know why we have laws at all if they are only a suggestion.

Regarding Harper breaking his own election fixed date law, why does the media ignore the fact that this law only applies to majority governments, as obviously, a minority government can be taken down through a non-confidence vote at any time.

I do not want another tax that will tax everything we care for and cherish and believe me this is what would happen if a liberal government is elected. They say this tax will be revenue neutral. HOGWASH, they are speaking out of both sides of their mouth, there is no way this tax will find its way back to the taxpayer. It will be used for administration and fund the liberals tax and spend policies. We have seen this before nad there is no way the liberals will tell the truth about it to Canadians.

Then there is Jack (Obama) Layton and his old ndp. Jack, get a grip, there is absolutely no comparison. Jack this comparison is highly hyprocritical. Did you not try to compare the Harper government to the government of the USA?

Canadian Politics have got to be the biggest sham this side of the Middle East. Why is there an election every two years and the threat of one every other year?

Why don't we elect our respective party leaders? You're not voting for somebody that you elected to run your party. The voters have no say in who represents them for their party.

I have no party affiliation. I will not be voting in this election. In the last ten months there have been two almost elections and now we're going to the polls.

Why vote in this election? there is just going to be another one in a year and a half.

So why vote?

I just can't take any of these people seriously. When they don't win, they sulk and moan and can't wait for an opportunity to call the next election. And when they do win, they sulk and moan, we didn't get enough power so we'll wait and call an election.

Whatever happened to a full term? Did it actually get changed to two years? Is two years now a full term?

Why bother?? Your just going to have to do it all again next fall.

It's too bad that Canadian Politics is a sham.

On policy, I struggle to understand the "green shift" but am thinking at this point that it is at least something put out there as opposed to the wait and see what others do attitude that the Harper Gov't has taken.

Local candidate, well nominations will decide that and if there is nothing clear nationally, I will go that route.

And with what justification for an election? Parliament has been working, perhaps not the way Mr. Harper would like, but nonetheless, it has been working with a minority government for the past two and a half years.
Even if the government is at "loggerheads" with the opposition, until a confidence vote takes place in the House of Commons and the government is forced out of office, no election is justified. A second minority does not mean a vote of confidence.

If Stephane Dion or any of the other party leaders truly believed they could command the House, any one of them could have approached the GG and asked her to keep the parliament alive with them as PM any time in the past 2.5 years. None of them did.

The fact is, the 39 Parliament was the mathematically weakest minority parliament in Canadian history, and yet your "moderate coalition" seemed completely incapable of teaming together to do anything about it.

What does that say about the quality of leadership in those parties?

There are followers and then there are leaders. I don't have to defend Mr. Harper. He can do that himself. We conservatives believe in defending democracy, individual rights to succeed for the betterment of society and encouraging others to do the same. We don't believe in bailing out failing businesses, but helping them to help themselves. It will be interesting to see who will prevail in this election - those with their hands out for big government, or those who believe in individual rights and freedoms.

The opposition said it would not support the Conservatives in a new session. So Harper asks for a new mandate. Why are we surprised?
Dion is all over the map searching for a platform. He found one in his carbon tax scheme. If anyone thinks that this will be "revenue-neutral" I would remind them that this will require administrative costs. These costs will of necessity have to be deducted from any tax rebates. Net result is negative on a family's income.
People say they don't trust Harper. I personally don't trust the Liberals. They have only one real intent, and that is to see their return to power so they can get their noses back into the trough. Besides which, there are a bunch more has-been Liberals who need seats in the senate. The only thing liberal about the Liberals is their tax grab schemes.

Mr. Harper says the Liberals don't want to talk about their green plan??? huh, they have been having town hall meetings all summer and are tweaking the fine points due to these Town Hall inputs. The 4 year rule is useless if the opposition is allowed the continual threat of "non-confidence". The present "law" does nothing to bring intelligent reason to the HOC. Without a law that sets the 4 year elections to be absolute we will continue to have the constant bickering and childish behavior we have been subjected to for the past 3 years. Our "Parliament" is a sick joke!
In the USA there is a means of Impeachment if there is a serious problem with the top guy. I also like the idea that you do not have to vote in the whole gang to get the best guy as the leader.

Harper is doing the right thing as the Fiberals didn't want an election and didn't have the 'testicular fortitude', or the money, to actually bring down the government as they threatened to do many, many times. Now that Harper has pulled the rug out from under D'Yawn the Fiberals cry foul. I am sure Canadians are going to see that D'Yawn is about as effective a leader as trying to fight a forest fire with water from a soup ladle, GO HARPER!!

The Conservative Party of Canada is the only party we can trust right now. They have not broken any promises: if the Liberals and NDP would actually be responsible read the legislation, fixed election days are for MAJORITY governments.

Half of Canadians are tired of radical leftist extremism. We're tired of liberal governments taking the reigns in our lives for the last 40 years and policing us with human rights tribunals (which are mockeries of justice).

Canadians are tired of high taxes. The carbon tax is a great example of poor leadership. Canadians have so many other problems, and Dion wants to give us another tax? I'm a poor man and I know the liberals (and NDP) are no friend of the poor. Dion needs to lose this election so the Liberal party can elect a new leader who will benefit the country.

I am terribly ammused at the reaction of the hysterical left by this election call. Take a moment to reflect on the numerous election threats that your weak leader Dion posed at every slight rise in the polls!

I think every Conservative can take great joy in this laughable liberal Dion...he certainly plays well into Prime Minister Harper's strategy to get Canada back into a world position of leadership and out of a social left-leaning state of decay! One step at a time...

This is a proud time in Canadian history, one that I have never experienced until the hope brought about by hard working people and a sound federal government.

As long as we can continue to bypass the views of inner-city Toronto (through left vote splitting), this country can remain strong.

God bless Canada!

After reading what Gary Doer want's to do in Manitoba, I'm afraid to think what the NDP will do on a federal level.

Mr. Doer want's to eliminate the law that requires the government to balance the books, and he wants to amass a debt of 12 billion before he leaves.

Now, my guess the Federal NDP would do this, then leave a massive debt for the next government to clean up.

Agree that Harper had no choice since there is no longer consensus on the major issues ie climate change, economy etc, and would have got worse chaos in parliament than before if continued. On the issues, Obama and Dion need to get their respective heads out of the sand, you can't hide from global economic competition, without creating trade wars and the usa is our biggest business client. They both sound like professors wanting to experiment with our way of life. The impact of a carbon tax is not known and our whole economic system is oil based; so why bother with a new tax regime and more administration where regulation does the same job.

Whether you like it or not (and I don't belong to any party or am I affiliated with any party), the Conservatives (notwithstanding any new major scandal over the next few weeks) are going to win a big majority - second only to the Dief and Mulroney. Although the Liberals will try to do what they can, they have a very weak leader. Bob Rae, Michael Ignatieff, Justin Trudeau, Gerard Kennedy and others - you will most likely be in a leadership race in the next 12 months.

As far as I am concerned, the best bet for our country is another minority government. Perhaps slightly larger, but still a minority.

I really don't have a problem if it is difficult to enact legislation. If a proposed bill is strong enough, makes enough sense, it will be passed one way or another. If it is stonewalled and fought by the opposition, then it probably isn't needed by the country anyway.

The minority government system makes our governments far more responsive to the people. They need "OUR" support to force the parties to fall in line. And, if anything is truly awful, the minorities can come together to block it completely.

All in all, I have no problems with our current situation and would like to see another Harper minority governemnt. I have no use for Mr. Layton's NDP, they frighten me, the Liberals are equally scary, and the Bloc hypocritical. But together, they represent a wide variety of Canadian opinions.

To me the answer is simple, if you want to be overtaxed and have a government that fiddles with social engineering making Canada the laughing stock of the world [why do we need a French Prime Minister], vote Liberal. Harper just committed political suicide.

The Conservatives must win a majority and if they can`t win a majority with Dion as the Liberal leader Harper will be asked to resign as Conservative leader.

Dion won`t win this election. Afterwhich, he will resign and Liberals will bring on a more charasmatic leader.

Harper just can`t seem to get past the simple fact that most Canadians don`t trust him. That will be the Liberals election message and tactic, by the way.

Harper knows that the numbers are showing he won`t get a majority but he had no choice but to call an election.

Carbon Tax neutral right. If gas goes up five cents and the average Canadian spends five thousand a year at well $1.20 a liter that is 4166 litres at five cents extra a litre. That is $2083.00 a year extra and that is only gas what about house heating food prices etc. The Liberal government is not going to give that back to me. Revenue neutral I don't thinks so.

If Stephen Harper's Conservatives get a majority, I sincerely fear for the life of my epileptic wife. Even a minority Conservative government could seriously affect her health, as she uses medical marijuana, for which she has a licence from Health Canada.

In the past six years, her health has improved dramatically through the use of this herb, and her seizures have dropped in both numbers and ferocity.

The Harper Conservatives railed against this program when they sat in opposition, and cut medical marijuana research funding when they got into power. Since then, they have decried the proven merits of safe-injection sites and harm reduction in general, and have reaffirmed their commitment to a U.S.-style war on drugs, even though all evidence suggests that this policy actually increases the problems it purports to fight, while subsidizing gangsters at home and terrorism abroad. They promise to jail more people for drug offences, even offering mandatory minimum prison sentences for growing a single marijuana plant!

We already have justice, order, and civility in Canada - our courts function well and are independent, there are no riots or incidents of general mayhem in the streets, and most people are civil to each other.

But best of all, we live in a country where you can express this opinion freely.

No matter what your opinion is or who you vote for, I urge everyone to get informed, study the issues, and most importantly, exercise your franchise. While our country is not perfect, we are certainly very fortunate to live here. We certainly owe it to ourselves to utilize what so many other people around the world cannot - our vote.

I'm interested in the facts. I understood that the fixed election law only applied to majority governments. Could the CTV.ca News Staff confirm that, and not just state the critics view?

Now, on the question of power itself - I see a lot of liberals being full of bluster and indignation that they are not in power. There is some sort of righteousness from the left that a party other than theirs is in power.

Rest assured, if the right had been united 10 or 15 years earlier, Jean Chretien would not have gotten 3 majority governments.

But I expect the scare tactics to be even nastier this time. It's not that Harper or the Conservatives are not doing a good job - in fact they have done more in 2 years than the Liberals did before, and I'll vote for Harper again. All of the bluster from the left is about not having power.

I think that it's ridiculous for the liberals/NDP to whine about a fixed election date. By the nature of the system, it's obvious that fixed election dates apply only in cases of a parliamentary majority. If they now insist on a fixed date, why did they not simply guarantee Prime Minister Harper that they would not topple the government before the fixed date?

Mr Layton, Mr Dion and Mr Duceppe have had the opportunity over 40 times to bring down the government whenever they wanted. They didn't. All they did was bitch about it.

I live in Ottawa Ontario. I think PM Harper is doing the right thing to call an election. With a majority the Conservatives can put the policies they want into place without having to have two weak backed "leaders" (and I use the term leaders loosely) and a separatist back his policies. He has helped bring stability to the country. Even with the price of oil the Canadian dollar is strong. The downturn of the dollar is caused by events around the world not the leadership of the country. On 14 October 2008 I will vote to keep Stephen Harper as leader of Canada

Supporters of moderate parties must put severe pressure on their candidates to indicate that a coalition WILL occur to defeat Harper if necessary. Restoring justice, order, & civility to Canada should not depend on a battle against vote-splitting.

My preference is for COLD & CALCULATED UNITY to end Harper's out-of-control bullying RIGHT NOW. I plan to put intense pressure on my local NDP candidate to GUARANTEE the NDP will GUARANTEE a coalition with the Bloc, Greens, & Liberals to end Harper's Dictatorial Republic of Clownservia INSTANTLY if the cons take the most seats again.

I'm not in a mood to haggle. I can't compromise on something this important. I need a guarantee. If I do not get one, there is no chance I'll be voting anything other than liberal because I need to vote against Harper in a manner that can actually END (& not just protest) his tyrannical reign.
