A missing Mexican man who some consider to be a prime suspect in the Ianiero case may have fled to the U.S., and his mother wants him to turn himself over to police.

Blas Delgado Fajardo, 37, worked as a security guard at the resort where Domenic and Nancy Ianiero had their throats slit in 2006.

Fajardo's mother, 59-year-old Aurora Fajardo, told The Globe and Mail he may have crossed into the U.S. with the help of his siblings.

She also said four of those siblings are living illegally in Madera, Calif.

Toronto-based lawyer Edward Greenspan, who represents the Ianiero family, has accused Fajardo of befriending the slain couple and later killing them in their hotel room.

Fajardo has said her children have warned her not to speak with the media, because they worry Canadians will find them in California and kill them.

Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay has said Ottawa is pressing the Mexican government on the Ianiero investigation.

Unlike the U.S., Canada does not have an agreement with Mexico that would allow it to send its own police to investigate the murder of Canadian citizens.

Critics have blamed Mexican investigators for failing to properly investigate the Ianiero murders. Two single mothers from Thunder Bay, Ont., who were at the same resort as the Ianieros, were called professional assassins by the attorney general for the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

They have repeatedly claimed their innocence and have called on Ottawa to clear their names.
