Your Say: Christmas tree controversy

The CTV Toronto mailbox has been flooded with e-mail from readers expressing their opinion regarding a judge's decision to remove the Christmas tree from her courthouse lobby, saying it's an inappropriate symbol to non-Christians. The responses have been edited in some cases for clarity or brevity.
Diane Lavi
As a Jew I object to Judge Cohen's decision to remove the Christmas tree. If we are a multi-cultural society, then let's ADD all of our symbols of light and joy together, instead of cancelling them all out.
Michael Fredericks
This seems pretty silly to me. The "Christmas" Tree, with its pagan origins isn't even a Christian symbol. The evergreen tree at Christmas is what you make it... it's not the same as sticking a cross in the lobby. All this fuss over a tree is unnecessary. Even if the tree was a Christian symbol, who cares? We live in a sea of religious symbols everyday. That doesn't mean its being forced upon us.
Debbie Wickett-Pearce
This has to be the most ridiculous decision of the year. What next, removal of all Christmas decorations in store windows and throughout Canada? We are a culture that embraces the diversity of all religious groups within Canada and a country of immigrants. Judges are not at liberty to favour one side, they are supposed to be impartial. This is a disgrace and should be challenged.

I was born into a Muslim family in a far away land, but have spent much of my adult life in North America. I have come to love the festivity of the Christmas season including the decorated Christmas trees. It makes me feel more generous at heart and realize that it is not Christianity (or any religion for that matter), it is some people who happen to be Christians I may have grievance against.
Rick McNulty
I'm an atheist and I have a Christmas tree! They don't offend me...neither does a Menorah or a Nativity. I have never related the tree to Christ and I don't know of many churches that do. I don't remember decorating a Christmas tree as any part of religious celebrations as a child. The thing to remember here is that the tree is not a Christian Symbol.
Joyce Beckett
I think that taking away the Christmas trees is a violation against the SPIRIT of Christmas. What happened to LOVE, HOPE, and PEACE, families, and a helping hand? I hope the judge doesn't take CHRISTMAS DAY off work and please turn off your television for fear that you may just happen to see a Christmas movie that hasn't been banned yet!
Les Coulthard
Removing a Christmas tree because it may insult someone who is non-Christian ... unbelievable. Just one more reason that judges should have to be voted in by the public rather than appointed. The job of a judge is to uphold the law not make the laws or make decisions based on assumptions. Another sad day for Canada.
Margaret Anthony
This is a particularly insensitive and arbitrary action on the part of Judge Marion Cohen. Our Prime Minister has just dedicated Canada's largest Christmas tree to our troops in Afghanistan. What does the judge's action say about understanding, equality and good decision-making?
Debbie Tenaglia
I truly believe the world is becoming so politically correct that our basic freedoms in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms are being forgotten. The right to religious expression has not been taken out of the Charter as far as I know.
Wendy Taylo
What next? Will "Christmas" be taken away from us altogether? After all, it might offend SOMEONE! It's really sad when you feel like a stranger in your own country!
Colin Burke
I cannot believe what this judge has done. She feels that non-Christians are being offended but what about the rest of us who believe in Christmas! Where are our rights? We have grown to a society that is so scared that we are going to upset someone else beliefs that we sacrifice our own beliefs!
Lena Azirian
It is absolutely ridiculous that a Christmas tree cannot be displayed in Canada. This is a democratic country. Why don't they vote on it, instead of one judge deciding whether there can be a tree or not? It is absolutely appalling. They should put the tree back where it belongs.
