British Columbia's only fish pedicure spa has been shut down by provincial health officials over concerns the treatment is unsanitary and can lead to a host of potentially deadly illnesses.

The Purple Orchid Spa in Duncan, B.C. has had to stop offering the treatment over threats of fines or even jail time for the owner.

The spa uses live garra rufa fish, known as doctor fish, which nibble dead skin from the client's feet in a filtered, bubbling tank.

"We know of at least 11 serious if not life-threatening illnesses that can be acquired from that type of treatment," said Dr. Richard Stanwick of the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

"This ranges from strep salmonella to more exotic organisms like nocardia and microbacteria."

At the Purple Orchid, owner Dixie Simpson said her clients come to the spa to experience the unique experience of having live fish nibble at their feet.

She said 700 people have undergone the treatment in the past year that the service has been offered, and there have been no adverse health effects whatsoever.

She said the argument that the practice is unsanitary doesn't hold water because her fish pedicure tanks use an ultraviolet filtration system that kills all bacteria.

"There's never been a public outbreak of any sort," Simpson told CTV B.C.

However, she said that wasn't taken into account when the health board made its ruling.

"I had to shut down my spa effective immediately or I would be fined up to $25,000 or up to six months in jail," she said.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority isn't the only regional health board to shut down businesses offering fish pedicures. It's also happened in New York and more than a dozen other states across the U.S.

The practice is common in Asia and the Middle East, and first gained popularity in Turkish spas where they are used to treat patients with psoriasis.

Only in recent years have the spas begun to appear in North America, and provincial and municipal health officials are struggling to come up with rules to regulate the industry.

Manitoba and Quebec allow fish spas to operate, while in the U.S. some states permit the practice while others do not.

For Simpson, the fish pedicure treatment has become an essential part of her business, which also offers manicures and hand treatments.

If she is forced to discontinue the service permanently, Simpson said, it will be difficult if not impossible to survive.

"A third of my business will be gone and that's a huge chunk for a small business," she said.

Simpson has started a petition challenging the decision by Health Canada and has enlisted the help of her local MP, who has asked the health authority to reconsider the decision.

This is exactly the type of way diseases spread from animals to humans. Has nothing to do with "sanitation" in itself. 700 people isnt a significant sample size whatsoever considering many diseases begin as remote probabilities but are unstoppable once they start. And they almost always begin from unnatural forced and prolonged exposure to animals. Newsflash: fish generally avoid humans in the wild unless they've been effectively tamed by so much contact. Nobody knew/cared about HIV either until it spread to humans...

We are like lambs being taken to the slaughter. Sheeple don't riot, argue, break the law, challenge stupid gov't interventions, or do anything else to demand their rights. We just sit back and let them control us any way they want. How pathetic. Wake up Canadians! Health Canada does not represent us and they have no right to take away our choices or to threaten us with fines or imprisonment if we don't comply. It's time we rioted in this country to demand that the Charter of Rights and Freedoms be honored not just by us, but by the government we have in (power?).

Took my kids to Bird's Hill Park last weekend to go swimming and attend the Folk Fest. We all went swimming and our toes were tickled by little fish. The kids used their goggles to watch them munch our toes. Best to shut the beach down for our safety. BTW - will be plus 30*C for the next week or two.

Only in Canada can a legitimate business be shut down by dimwitted and uneducated bureaucrats who only care about their fat cheques and not about encouraging economic growth.Hope Ms. Simpson will fight the corrupt health authority before the courts to ensure this innovative business remains open.If its legal to run tanning beds that are bad for your health and causes cancer, why is it illegal to have fish pedicures?Besides, I don't see anything wrong with using natural means to get a pedicure.Bring on the fish pedicures.

Who cares? People like all kinds of wacky things. And this one certainly is wacky. But if someone wants to pay for some fish or their cat or their girlfriend, for that matter, lick their toes, who cares?

What has happened to "freedom of choice" and "deciding things for ourselves" ??? Everyday that is getting cut -back !!! (Like everything else !!)When are we going to stop being like a herd of mammals and tell the gov't agencies "okay, give us the information and let US decide what we want to do with it" FREEDOM OF CHOICE PEOPLE ......FREEDOM OF CHOICE!!!

Okay seriously, to all the nay Sayers! No one is forcing you to stick your feet into a fish tank, so what do you care if some one else dose? I guess it comes down to the fundamental differences between conservative centralists and liberal socialists. As a conservative centralists I would most likely not stick my feet in a fish tank. But If someone else wants to thats their prerogative. You liberal socialists on the other hand are disgusted by this even though you have never done it but think your experts in everything. And because of your prejudices you think that everyone else should conform to your ideals and say BAN IT!!! when are you going to learn that you are not always right?

I have had this done several times - it's wonderful!! Why does everything alternative have to be shut down by our 'big brother' government. Allow us the right to make a decision - right or wrong - it's my decision. If VIHA is concerned, they should probably not get this done. I guess it's a little like ear candling and everything else that has been going on and helping quality of life for centuries - come to Canada or the U.S. and get shut down!!

There's any number of serious diseases that can be contracted in hospitals too (just about the only place to find antibiotic-resistant superbugs). Perhaps they'll be shutting down the hospitals next.

Those fish are crapping the dead skin of the previous client(s) while the are eating yours. Ultraviolet is not going to solve that problem. There's a case for this treatment if the water is completely replaced for each client, and the water is continuously flowing out and through ultrafiltration.

just another example of fear mongering to further separate humanity from nature. I can safely say that hospitals can expose you to many more deadly and exotic super bugs. Mark Emery can say the same about prisons. So lets just hermetically seal ourselves away until we are allergic to the very air we breath and then they can commodify that too, not paying for air is so uncivilized. Who knows what you can be exposed to.

So what about the public schools and all those unsantary kids that parents drop off every day? Ew. Or what about going to a Hospital and getting some infection you can ONLY get in a hospital. Oh for SHAME. Close them all down. The NANNY state is really starting to take hold. Next up, bubble wrap for you in the car. I would like to know if the water is filtered and sanitized, and the fish breed locally and not just grabbed from a lake somewhere, how the heck would you get an exotic parasite from the fish? Someone in their health department needs to go on a camping trip. They would probably die the minute they breath that refreshing stinken fresh air.

I see Health Canada is up to their insanity. And Canadians never seem to scream for Health Canada investigations as per usual....If you people had any idea of how many millions Health Canada has cost you all in paid out settlements....again it's far more than the Liberal Ad scandal folks,...far more. All because of incompentance and in some cases open corruption....**** In just one voting region here where I live, two businesses were shut down one by incompetance the other was corruption...One Conservative MP was involved in both cases trying to help both businesses, both went to the courts because Health Canada 'never makes a mistake'....multi-million dollar settlements and I mean 'multi'.....****You folks should really do some research, you'd be amazed at the trivial stuff you've been mad at in comparison.

So let me get this strait you can get 11 serious if not life-threatening illnesses, but no one has yet has got one because the spa uses a ultraviolet filtration system that kills all bacteria and they keep the water clean. Did you know that if you dont cook Rice properly you will get Botulism!!! What about sushi? Gezs we need to ban Uncial Ben!!! I am really getting sick of this nanny state that when one person complains we ban it. As long as the spa customers are informed of possible risks they can make their own choice.

Just another example of a Nanny State....because obviously none of us can make decisions for ourselves anymore.

My wife forced me to make her a throne out of wood, red velvet, and gold paint. Each night, after the kids have gone to bed, she sits on it, extends her feet outward, and demands that I rub and kiss them. (Sometimes I have to suck her toes.) This story prompts me to make a call to Toronto Public Health. Perhaps they can help me concoct an excuse to get out of the demeaning ritual.

So let's get this straight - because some girl somewhere one time got an infection from this process, it is being banned in BC. Does that mean they will also ban doorknobs, sneezing and handshaking? As long as clients are warned of possible risks, let them decide for themselves whether to have the service. This is the principle that applies to bungee jumping, which is permitted throughout BC.

I just love the double standards of society... You can abuse yourself with products like tobacco, alcohol, over-caffeinated energy drinks, high fructose corn syrup, experimental pharmaceuticals with various known side effects, and services like acupuncture, and tanning beds which are known to cause skin cancer, but you can't cycle with ear-buds, smoke marijuana, or use a "fish spa" at your own discretion because of the unproven rare potential risks apparently associated with such activities. Health authorities should back off and just request that these spas warn customers of the potential risks and have them sign consent forms, so that they wont be held liable in case a client is infected. To a certain extent people should have the right to risk their health at their own discretion without socialist intervention. Threatening the spa with a $25000 fine without allowing them to appeal is pure extortion, not consumer protection!

I read about an elderly person got hit by a car crossing the road. Will BC's health athorities ban elderly people or all people from crossing roads? Sounds more like they are power hungry and want to force there way's on to this buisness. Just wait, a new "fishy Tax " is coming.

I kept tropical fish for many years. I was able to check my tanks for all sorts of bacteria, funghi etc. every day. I was also able to add various chemicals to the water if I needed to, that effectively neutralized whatever the problem was. Also there are filter mediums available that really do clean bad bacteria out of the water, and prevent them passing into the tank in the first place. Because I had small children who loved helping to care for the fish I made very sure my tanks were clean. It seems that the Spa in BC does exactly the same things I would have done. I would have definitely made use of the fish if I lived in the area, and brought my daughter too.

I've been swimming in the lake our cottage is on since the '70's, and I'd guess that fish have been pooping in there for some thousands of years more than that. Never had an issue. There's a lot of cottagers on the lake... never heard of an issue. Good thing these wacky scientists weren't around when I was a kid otherwise I'd have probably given up swimming lessons.

Health Conscious

For all the health conscious out there, I am just wondering how the spa got their license to operate the fish pedicure in the first place and why the city health department is acting up against it now? The health report mentions probabilities of diseases but as a vegan for more than 29 years, how come no health departments are concerned about meat eating, fish eating and generically engineered food? I think there are more dangerous practices to worry about like tatooing with dirty needles or even exchanging dirty needles when using street drugs. Here is a suggestion to any health department in any city. How being concerned about the people who eat of the city garbages to feed themselves and risking to carry TB, or other dangerous diseases by living on the streets. That would be a much bigger case to tackle than worry about fishes eating dead cuticles and causing a private business to close. But maybe there is hope: the health departments will eventually tackle more urgent causes. This is so ridiculous: not the fish spa, the health department concern!

Have you never been vacation at the lake, or along a river, or by the ocean, and sitting on a dock, a rock, or otherwise dangling your feet and legs in the water, and found you had little tiny fish nibbling at you? Tickles! And this procedure is just a take on that, something natural. Part of a very fancy pedicure, and nothing unnatural involved. I see no problem if the owner is being as "clean" about this as every other procedure they use in the spa. Do you think the mud you get plastered with is a one use spa item? Reheat to "clean" temperature and use again. What is silly about this story is the very idea that disease would be spread here any faster than through use of water fountains in public places.

I am in the esthetics business. I would rather provide a safe service than a unique service. There is no way to properly santize, sterlize or disinfect here. A water fliter isn't going to eliminate disease. If I lose a few clients becuase I am not offering this service that is not safe, then so bit it. If I am at risk of lose my business because I have to stop offering one service, then my menu wasn't diverse enough.

Thats Canada...where people afraid of their own shadows somehow manage to work themselves into a position of authority, where they spread their own fears onto others, and then force their narrow minded ignorant and fearful oprinions and values onto others. The fish spas have existed for decades if not linger, in less hygenic locations, and guess what, nothing has happened, except the healing of those who needed that service.Let it go people, let it go.

It stands to reason there would be a high risk of infection. I would be mostly concerned with people-people infection rather than the introduction of the fish. Use your heads, people.
