A terrible tragedy for the family but the dog was just being a dog. I hope they don't destroy this beautiful animal that may have thought it was protecting the home from some sort of threat.

Pet husky that killed newborn baby was trained

AIRDRIE, Alta. — A friend of an Alberta couple whose two-day-old baby was killed by the family's pet husky says the dog was probably trying to comfort the crying boy when it delivered one fatal bite to the child's delicate, tiny head.

Dawn Donald says she has spoken with the baby's devastated parents, Rob and Rhonda Fradette, and they seem to have done everything they were supposed to do when they brought their new baby home from the hospital last week.

They had locked the dog in its kennel in the basement and put their sleeping baby in his crib, Donald said. But somehow the dog escaped and went to investigate when the baby woke up crying. It was not a vicious attack, she said, and the same bite wouldn't have killed an older child.

The parents believe the dog may have been trying to care for the child, she said.

"When dogs grab their young, they grab them there to pull them in," said Donald, who came to know the Fradettes through the dog-sledding community in southern Alberta.

She said the nine-year-old female dog, a Siberian husky, had previously delivered four litters of its own puppies.

"It wanted to nurture, care for (the baby)," Donald said. "It felt like it was part of the family. That's what it seemed like to them."

Donald, who runs Mad Dogs & Englishmen Expeditions, a dog-sled touring company in Canmore, Alta., conceded that no one will ever know what was going through the dog's mind. The parents issued a statement through the RCMP on Thursday that described their son's death as an "unthinkable, tragic accident" but did not talk about what happened.

"We will never know what our family pet was thinking nor will we ever know why she did what she did," they said. "We now have to accept what has happened and move forward in our grieving and healing."

The RCMP will only say that their investigation revealed there was no negligence and there will be no criminal charges.

The baby was born on the night of Feb. 13 and was attacked on the morning of Feb. 15 at the couple's house in Airdrie, a bedroom community just north of Calgary. He died 12 hours later at Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary.

The animal remains in quarantine. The Fradettes said they have been too busy mourning the loss of their child to discuss whether the dog should be destroyed. The animal had not been aggressive before and went through training and obedience classes.

The parents said they also attended seminars by the Calgary Humane Society, including one on how to bring a new baby into a home with pets.

Darryl Poburan, manager of municipal enforcement in Airdrie, said the husky is being assessed by an animal behaviour specialist.

If the family decides it doesn't want the dog destroyed, the matter will be heard by a provincial court judge on March 15, he said.

"It's not the city's choice to destroy the dog," Poburan said. "In this case, we feel that it needs to be heard by a judge, and he needs to make that decision whether this dog should be put back into society or not."

Donald said the Fradettes are taking their time with the decision, "so they can look at it objectively, which is, I think, really big of them."

"Not only have they lost their baby, but now they're going to lose a dog, too, that they desperately love. And it's like their whole family unit has been blown apart in every direction."

For the Fradettes, dogs are their family and also their business. They run a home-based company called Urban Mushers that sells dog-sledding supplies. According to their website, they own four Siberian huskies named Spot, Siku, Ikkuma and Celine.

Rob Fradette is a competitive dog-sled racer. Neighbours said they often saw the family hook their dogs to a sled in front of the house to go for a ride. The couple also has a 2 1/2-year-old son.

"Both of us are very experienced regarding the husky breed and canines in general," said the couple, who added that all their dogs have gone through numerous rally, tricks, agility and pulling-sports classes.

The couple also said in the release that they have been touched by friends, relatives, fellow mushers and "complete strangers who have reached out their arms and shown us love and support during this extremely difficult time."

They have set up a memorial fund in the name of Baby Fradette. Donations will go to the Alberta Children's Hospital.

"It is with broken hearts and many tears that this memorial fund has been created," the family wrote on the hospital's website.

"Although we wish that no other family has to go through having a child in the (hospital), we are asking those that care to support this amazing facility so they can continue to do the work that they do."

The Fradettes have in the past written about their love for the dogs on their business website. Rob Fradette also detailed his sled races on Facebook.

On Feb. 14, he wrote about bringing home his new son, Grayson, and feeling like "the luckiest, most happy guy in the world." He said the dogs welcomed the baby home by singing.

His last entry simply reads: "Hurting."

I hope they find forgiveness because regardless of their tragic loss the dog is still in love with them and is missing its family. It will be hard but would it make your life easier if you put down a sentient being?

Please READ the article before you comment! It says they locked the dog in it's kennel in the basement, but it got out. They did NOT leave the dog and newborn alone! They are not negligent bad parents. This is a tragic accident and my heart goes out to them.

I hope they don't kill the dog. It seemed like she didn't mean to hurt the baby. It will be a double tragedy if they kill her. They just got to be more careful and vigilant with their babies or small children.

My heart just aches for the parents of the deceased 2day old baby. Having said that, if this tragedy happened in my family there would be no discussion of the future of this dog. It is my opinion that this dog will never be trustworthy, around small children, and should be put down. It matters not how much training this dog has received. It would not have survived for mere hours if it were my canine.

I have had siberian huskies for over 20 years. They live in the house with me and have never gone after anyone of any age. "Taste of blood" this is completely untrue. Once they have bitten once does not mean they will bite again. Did anyone think maybe the dog has a medical condition? She was raised with the other child and had no problems then. Pick up any book on Siberian Huskies and you will see that they are everyone's friend. I cannot understand why a husky would do this so maybe a medical report would help.

ken try and educate yorself before you comment, huskys, malamute, and Canadian eskimo dogs are bred and love being sled dogs. Being house dogs and living in warm climates is far more cruel then letting them pull.

David

Criminally negligent or not, the attack could not have happened if there was an adult between the dog and the child. We shouldn't heap blame on the parents, but neither should we put the animal down. For anyone with even a basic understanding of the breed, it's well-known that Huskies and Malamutes have intense prey-drives and should not be trusted around small animals or children, period. Those people advocating euthanisation are really looking for retribution; to apply the same standards we'd apply to a person who attacked a child. The dog was just doing what it's instinctually inclined to do, don't punish it for that.

This is a sad and terrible tragedy. I spend most of my time with dogs and study behavior both good and bad for many years. I amnot sure of the husky females age. What could of happened was the infant cried and the dog reacted as if it was an injured prey animal. That she didn't kill the infant then would say to me, that she was not adept at hunting. Many dogs react in this primitve manner when another dog screams in pain. Never leave infants or children alone with animals no matter how loving the child or the animal. My condolances to the family one dog lover and parent to another.

It is no doubt heartbreaking to lose a child in such a way. The dog will be vilified by many, but the fact remains that it is simply not safe to leave a defenceless child alone with an animal.

If anyone has ever been attacked by a dog you know it is one of the most horrifying experiences in the world. I know because I have been there. But people need to realize that a dog works on instinct, no matter how trained they are. Any animal can and/or will attack. Do I feel that the dog needs to be euthanized? I didn't want the dog to attack me to die, but unfortunately once it attacked me, a few months later it attacked someone else. They were a lot luckier then I was. I was literally blind for a couple of months in my one eye, and all the nerve endings around my eye are forever ruined. So in this case, the dog may have to be put down. It is sad, I have two dogs that I love dearly, but because of my previous attack I will never fully trust. So for those people who say give the animal away, I understand what you are hoping will happen, but if it attacks someone else then who would be responsible??? I am sure that it wouldn't be YOU!!!

The amount of unadulterated ignorance in the comments is bewildering to me.No, huskies are not "part wolf". Go do some research. And "Dog Lover": at two days old, I doubt that the child did anything to try to tease the dog. Tragic though this is (and my heart goes out to the parents), it does serve as a reminder that you cannot leave a dog unattended with a small child or infant, even for a moment or two. I love my dog, but when I'm babysitting my nephews, the dog is never left alone with them even though he's one of the most gentle creatures I've met (my cats stare him down). The thing is, none of us know the details, whether one of the parents was in the room and turned their back for a moment, or if the dog was left completely alone. Without those facts, it's impossible to lay blame with any accuracy.

A dog can have a hard time differentiating between an adult human and a baby. Babies can look like toys to them. The baby should have never been alone with the dog. It is the parents fault sadly. They put to much trust in their pet. This dog should LIVE, it can go to an adult home.

Sarina

For all you who blame the parents for leaving the baby alone with the animal... how do you know he wasn't sleeping in his crib... or resting in a bassinet or swing in the living room and the person watching him stepped out to go pee because they knew he was sleeping? I say kill the animal and get rid of the rest of the ones they have too (just in case). This is simply ridiculous!

Some dogs are very protective of their owners and it may have been jealous of this new baby, thinking it was taking to much attention from it. we have a german shepard that is jealous of any animal in our house, even to the point of attacking .Their is always someone home with them, but when there isn't I don't think she would attack because then there is no reason to attack....it's always the attention from the humans she's jealous about.

What is almost as sad as this story are all the so called "dog experts" chiming in with their advice and blaming the parents. For the billionth time, the baby was not left alone with the dog! This has been stated many times in the other news reports. The baby was just days old. Do you really think the parents went outside for a smoke? It would only take a split second for the dog to lunge at the baby, so please think before you casually lay blame in this horrible incident. The parents have been through enough.

RIP little one, and condolences to the familyI have a 6 yr old female black lab (Maggie) who is the most amazing dog... she's actually a bit wimpy and submissive... a big baby :) She wouldn't hurt a fly!I also have two teenagers. Maggie is perfectly fine with them and their friends.... however, when little ones come over (toddlers), Maggie gets very stressed. I can see it in her immediately. She begins to pant, quickstep around the living room, etc. I usually put her outside when little children come over. I think little children smell different, sound different, move randomly... all of that doesn't sit well with Maggie. I would be mortified if she did anything to these children, so... outside in our fenced backyard she goes! It's just safer that way!

Too all these posters claiming negligence:How do you know the dog was ever left alone with the baby? Nowhere in the story does it suggest this. The dog could have lunged and inflicted a fatal wound as as the parents sat holding the infant in their very arms. Also, the story states the couple has a 2 1/2 year old son. Who would ever suspect a trained dog that is well behaved around small children to act in in such a manner. The truth is we don't have all the facts. It's horrible tragedy, but I trust they police when they say no one is to blame.

This story has changed my opinion of animal rights activists radically. I cannot believe that some people can actually side with the dog in this case. To expect that simply moving this dog to another home (or farm) is not a reasonable solution. It can and will always be a risk to those around it. As for this family, they have experienced a horrible tragedy, so those who are all too happy to spout about how the parents are to blame should be ashamed. We should be supporting, not bashing them.

People on here saying the dog should be killed because it killed the baby? Number 1, you shouldn't leave a newborn baby alone with a dog. The parents were being negligent in this situation. Number 2, to the person that said "dog kills human. dog dies." Think of how many animals have been put down for killing or attacking a human? Now think of how many people have been killed for attacking or killing an animal. Putting that dog down for doing what it's natural instincts told it to do is just plain stupid. You can tame animals, but you will NEVER rid them of their natural instincts. Plain and simple.

The facebook page also asks (prior to the baby';s death) for the name of a Dr to do a vasectomy because although they are done having children they think they'll need "around 30" (dogs). I imagine that opinion has changed through this awful experience. I have so much sympathy for this family, but when a child is harmed, all respect or consideration for dogs should be out the window. You can train a dog, but you can't train the instinct out of them. Our society must learn that dogs are not people and we don't treat them or trust them like people.

If u dont understand that fact that dogs bite, dogs bark, cats scratch, and cats bite. Than dont get a pet. I'd NEVER put an animal down for a mistakes. Yes, its a sad mistake, its a horrible mistake. But why punish the animal, if u dont want the animal let someone take it in. Every perfectly trained animal screws up, when you have pets and babies you need to spend a little more time to your babies and your pets. They dont mean harm, even though sometimes they do cause actual harm. I dont think this dog should be put down.

I don't think the dog should be killed, but it should be given away. Why anyone would leave a brand new baby alone with a dog is beyond my understanding. Especially a big dog. The baby probably looked like a chew toy to the dog. I can't imagine how this family is feeling, but get rid of the dog before something happens to the older child. They have definitely learned a hard lession and my heart breaks for them.

I love all animals specially dogs but they are wild by nature and not by fault. an innocent baby died and I hope this teaches pet owners that no matter how trained a dog is it CAN NOT be trusted around younge children. Some breeds are more dangerous than others but at the end of the day it's an animal. Putting the dog down won't bring the baby back. This could have been prevented.

Jo
said

Details of the attack won't be released? No graphic content required, but isn't there a possibility others could learn from a situational review of what happened? I 'assume' these people know enough to never leave any dog alone with a small child. Is that what happened? I take that precaution with my own dog. If that's not what happened, I would like to know if there is something else I should be concerned about.

Ann

Training means nothing. It's a dog with instincts. "we will never know what the dog was thinking" - it's a dog. I would never allow a dog to be alone with an infant. I think many have gone over the top with regard to animals - we're not pet 'owners' anymore, we are pet 'parents'. It's ridiculous. We love our dog, but it is a dog not a quasi human - and if she attacked a child she would be put down.

Dog Lover
said

Usually dogs just mangle and permanently maim children, this is an exception! Probably dogs kill children less than 10 times in every 10,000 dog attacks in Canada each month. The child should not have been teasing the dog.

J.C.
said

I have had dogs around me my entire life. Most trainers will teach you how to train a dog but they do not always tell people what to be cautious of. Some dogs see children swinging or flailing their arms and whether they consider it a threat or wanting to play - either way they will go for the child. A screaming child is another draw, whether it is only play screaming or not. It excites some dogs. The same goes for showing fear or running from a dog will draw the dog to you. You always have to be on guard with dogs as you never know whether these things will cause your dog to react at one time or another or not. It is a tragedy this family has been put through so much anguish.

JB

This is a very sad subject. I have 2 little boys and if an animal ever killed my children, that animal would be put down. I'm not sorry to say it but my kids come before any animal. This dog needs to be put down. More and more dogs are killing people every day. Obviously training them isn't helping. Once dogs have a taste for blood they go after anything and everything. I grew up with dogs on my parents farm. I know how a dog behaves.

This was a tragic accident, and the people who are judging the family should be ashamed of themselves. The family clearly put more time and effort into their dogs than over 99% of the population does. How many of you train and compete with your dogs in multiple dogsports??? I do, and I can tell you it takes an insane amount of time, effort and expense. This family did everything right - they trained their dogs and became educated by going to seminars before their baby was delivered. They did more than most of the population (including those writing on here) would do. But accidents happen, and in this case the results were horrific. What they decide to do with the dog is a personal decision - they have the right to make the decision, and we have no right to judge either way. For myself, I will take this as a very valuable lesson. I will continue to ensure that I never, ever, ever leave my dogs alone with any child, even for a moment. I am so sorry this lesson was reinforced at this family's expense. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

This was an accident, pure and simple. The parents were working within our society's belief system that with training, all kinds of things can be accomplished. Society should be lifting what burdens it can lift from the shoulders of these parents. What should be examined is the mythology that surrounds training. Let's acknowledge that some things are dangerous and should not be done unless needed. Things like skiing in avalanche areas and allowing dogs near new borns. Let's also acknowledge that people have unique abilities and some things are safer for some than others. Canoeing is fine for those sports minded but might be deadly for non athletic teenagers with long hair. Our current societal lifeways often do not demonstrate common sense. Sometimes it really really matters that society has veered from moderation, off into la la land. LIke with current beliefs about training.
