After a noisy awakening Wednesday morning, an Alberta man stumbled out of bed to find two massive transport-truck tires in his kitchen.
Strathmore, Alta. resident Bill Oriold was woken up at about 6:30 a.m. local time to the deafening sound of shattering glass and the smell of smoke. Thinking his furnace had exploded, he rushed out of his bedroom into the hallway, where he saw the tires that had flown into his home.
Police believe the 90-kilogram tires and their axel came off a truck that was heading north on Highway 24, east of Calgary. They travelled half a kilometre, ricocheted off a hydro pole and smashed through a neighbour's fence before heading straight for Oriold's front door.
"I looked over and here's big set of… tires off what I presume is a semi trailer unit," he told CTV Calgary on Wednesday. "Off a big rig… Sitting right at the top of my stairs."
Oriold, his wife and their 16-year-old granddaughter were in the home at the time, but nobody was hurt.
After examining the debris left around his house by the tires, he believes they are all lucky to be alive.
He says he plans to capitalize on his good luck by buying some lottery tickets.
"There was debris all the way up to the kitchen sink," he said. "It lifted the lever; the kitchen sink was running. There's a piece of the screen door up on the sink by the back wall."
The family snapped a few pictures of the tires before the fire department hauled them away -- taking four people to lift them out of the house.
Throughout Wednesday, police were asking the public to watch for a truck with a missing tire. They eventually heard from a transport company who'd spoken to a driver who had lost some tires.
"The driver of the vehicle that had been going through the area at the time stopped and inspected his vehicle, found that he had indeed suffered a loss of equipment. He called his shop and made a report," a local police spokesperson told CTV Calgary.
Police are investigating and say they aren't sure if any charges will be laid.
