"Degrassi" fans and colleagues are expressing condolences Thursday after news that Neil Hope, who played "Wheels" on the series, apparently died five years ago.

Little is known about how Hope died or why his death was kept secret for so long. Facebook members who said they were his relatives posted a notice of his death last month, saying he died Nov. 25, 2007 from "natural causes."

In a tweet posted Thursday, executive producer Stephen Stohn indicated he had known about the actor's death for some time.

Executives had "respected the privacy of the family by not saying anything until now," Stohn wrote, adding the "entire team is very emotional about (Hope's) passing."

Hope appeared on "The Kids of Degrassi Street," "Degrassi Junior High," "Degrassi High" and "Degrassi: The Next Generation." In the latter three, he played the character, Derek (Wheels) Wheeler; a member of the band the Zit Remedy, who faced family trouble and alcoholism.

Show creator Linda Schuyler, who remains at the helm of the Degrassi franchise today, indicated Thursday that Hope had faced troubles in his real life as well. The actor had spoke publicly about his parents' addictions during the show's heyday.

"His life was not an easy one but the time he spent with us was a shining example of determination, hard work and hopeful optimism and he is sorely missed," she said, in a joint statement with Stohn. "Neil made an important contribution to our lives, to the lives of our television team -- who are like a family to us -- and indeed to the lives of the many Canadians and others around the world who were influenced by Neil and the roles he played.

"We were terribly saddened to hear the news."

Hope's final "Degrassi" appearance was in 2003, on a "Next Generation" episode in which the Zit Remedy members reunite as adults and set aside long-standing bad blood. After a night at the bowling alley, they drive home in character Joey Jeremiah's convertible, singing their one-time hit "Everybody Wants Something."

A spokeswoman for Epitome Pictures, which produces the show, told The Canadian Press producers had lost touch with Hope over the past several years.

As a loyal Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High fan during the 1980s and 1990s, Joey Jeremiah (Pat Mastroianni), Derek "Wheels" Wheeler (Neil Hope), Archie "Snake" Simpson (Stefen Brogren) were definitely my favourite characters.Whatever the cause of death, Neil Hope will be greatly miss. Thanks Neil.

Shame. Very private family by the sound of it. I grew up on this show in the 80's and loved it. Child actors seem to have a hard time with life post acting. Rest in Peace "Wheels".

I think there is more to this story then what they are saying

RIP - To the most Canadian of the original Degrassi cast! (If you question that, listen to all the episodes of DJH and DH - he clearly had the most Canadian accent.)

It's sad to hear of his passing. Like most Canadians in their mid to late 30's, Degrassi was a favourite show of mine! I sincerely hope his passing was painless, and he was surrounded by people who loved him.

How terribly sad. I have the entire original Degrassi series starting with the Kids on Degrassi Street where Neil played Griff up to the Degrassi High series where Neil played Wheels. Degrassi is a right of passage for many Canadian kids and it was a pleasure to watch Neil grow as a performer all those years. People deserve the right to die in privacy as they do to live in it, so I will just say thanks for all the memories!

Isn't it strange that nobody who knew him would have released this information at some point online over the past 5 years??? Didn't any of his friends realize he was nowhere to be found??? This is bizarre.RIP Wheels

@Jeremy - maybe it was the choice of the family to not make a public announcement regarding his death?
I agree, Degrassi was must-see tv growing up and the characters and problems they faced were something we all could relate to.

Oh my god, how did his death fall under the Radar. I am in my late 30's now, and I remember Joey Jeremiah and Wheels as the most predominant characters on the show back then. I identified with the struggles that "Wheels" went through, alcohol, teenage pregnancy. I am so distraught over this news, I really hope he didn't suffer, and I hope he is resting in peace. Fame is fleeting, but family is forever!
