A 15-year-old boy died in hospital after collapsing on the bench during a hockey game west of Ottawa on Sunday night.

The boy was sitting on the bench at about 6 p.m. ET on Sunday evening during the game at the Erskine Johnson Arena in Carp, Ont., when he collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest.

The boy, whose name has not been released, had been playing in the game and displayed no signs of injury or trauma prior to collapsing.

He had not been hurt during the game.

"He had been playing hockey, he had returned to the bench after his shift, and it was noticed that he had collapsed," Staff Sgt. Pat McCaffery told The Canadian Press.

"The trainer and others started to provide CPR and other treatment, including using a portable defibrillator."

Paramedics arrived at about 6:20 ET, and found the teenager unconscious. He was taken to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and was pronounced dead early Monday.

Foul play is not suspected.

McCaffery said the boy's family was with him in the hospital but did not say if the player had regained consciousness before he died.

The family has requested that the boy's name not be released.
