Some Quebec MPs are returning their Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medals in protest of the federal government's spending on monarchy celebrations.

At least six Quebec MPs -- all four Bloc Quebecois members, along with two New Democrats -- are reportedly refusing to accept the jubilee medals going to all 308 members of the House of Commons.

A total of 60,000 jubilee medals will be handed out this year to Canadians who've made significant contributions to their communities.

NDP MP Pierre Nantel, who represents Quebec's Longueuil-Pierre-Boucher riding, confirmed to CTVNews.ca he's returning his medal.

"To me, it's a very personal decision," he said in a phone interview Monday.

Nantel said his feelings about the monarchy are "not the biggest reason" for his decision but he thinks the government is spending too much money on jubilee celebrations.

The Conservatives have budgeted $7.5 million for various events and festivities and the cost of the medals alone is $3.5 million.

Bloc MP Louis Plamondon called it a waste of money at a time when the federal government is talking about cuts to public pensions and department budgets.

"It's over the top," Nantel said, adding it's "illogical" to give the medals to MPs.

"Me being here (as MP) for seven months – (is it) worth the medal? Why? If I am re-elected, if the people in my riding think I am doing a good job representing them, then that's my medal," he said.

Nantel said he's not surprised by reports that several other MPs in Quebec are also scoffing at the medals.

"They're probably doing it for the same reasons," he said. "It's a matter of being at ease or not with the monarchy."

The anti-monarchist sentiment is strong in Quebec amid the jubilee hoopla, with one nationalist group, Montreal's Societe Saint-Jean-Baptiste, announcing plans for anti-Queen celebrations.

Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore told CTV's National Affairs Monday the Queen's medal is "a pretty special honour" that allows Canada to recognize many of its "unsung heroes" – regular folk whose good deeds often go unnoticed.

"It's the person who volunteers at the rink that you never think of, the pastor who helps kids who never gets recognized, people who volunteer and give back, veterans, community leaders," Moore said.

He noted that MPs will also receive a batch of jubilee medals to distribute among worthy constituents, whose names will be recorded on a public registry.

At an inaugural ceremony in Ottawa Monday, 60 Canadians -- including Olympic champion Alexandre Bilodeau and Terry Fox's brother, Darrell -- were presented with jubilee medals. More such ceremonies will take place across Canada.

Despite the controversy, the Conservative government thinks the monarchy is "an important institution that should be recognized," Moore said.

"Obviously, the debate about the monarchy is not something that's new or something that's going to go away."

Well we now know we have at least 6 good MP's in Ottawa that can think beyond themselves. Nothing wrong with celebrating the Queen's diamond jubilee, but this government is developing a track record of going over the top. Especially at a time when some many Canadians are struggling. What are they thing? Or are they thinking at all?

I live in Western Canada and I have defended Quebec : Quebec is a very important part of Canada, however to those Bloc and NDP MP's who refused the medals because it was excessive then why are they still accepting a huge MP salary and pension when they retire; thes 6 should immediately resign from Parliament and give up their cushy pensions; Just think of the savings. If they do not like the Dominion of Canada please feel free to leave at anytime and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out

Personally I think that the present Government should send the Queen a nice big card, signed by all of The serving M.P'S. Then give $3.5m to extra education programs and the other half to health care for necessary equipment, then at least we could say the money was spent helping others!!

I am glad I ain't getting one of these medals, MP's are paid well and I suspect like most others who are getting medals, this is ludicrous, give medals and dollars to the homeless, they suffer more than most for their country, most are males and are discriminated against daily... Plus, Why should Canada celebrate with much hurrah, the Queen, a long dead relationship and one that no doubt is a bad memory for Canada's indigenous population.

These people get paid A LOT of money to be members of the Canadian Parliament. As such they have a duty to set an example. As long as we are a member of the Commonwealth with the Queen as Head of State they need to be respectful. Imagine if some of us refused to accept documents that included French! They also have no issue taking more than their share of equalization payments. I get tired of MP's who have no issue taking Canadian money and Canadian pensions then throwing it in our faces.

I see no reason why all MPs are deemed worthy of receiving the Queen's Jubilee Medal. For the Quebec MPs, a real waste of money is having to pay the salary for someone who does not believe in Canada but has the audacity to accept payment from the crown! Do us all a favour, have the courage of your convictions and leave...please.

I'll be very happy and very proud to accept this medal if they don't want it. Should we honor her? You bet! How many of us have held the same job for 60 years??Would you rather see the next one in line to be 'Queen",,,Camilla!!!

You know these medals are issued to all members of the commonwealth armed forces who have 5 or more years service but in Canada they only go out to a select few, the so called butt kissers. And then these people who do get them have the gall to do this, you should all be ashamed of yourselves. I served my country and continue to serve only so idiots like you have the right to do this......sad!

Good! Now they can be given to someone that deserves them. Two year olds should not be allowed to have anything they might swallow and do themselves an injury.

These medals should be given out to the deserving; not politicians just because they are politicians.I have no idea why they have to cost so much. I am sure that they could have been made at a lesser cost.

Good they dont deserve them. Very childish I would say. Then again Separatists dont deserve a medal. They should only be given to people who have done something worthwhile for their country.

If the criteria for awarding this medal includes contributions to our country, why isn't it been given to every living veteran - they have given more than the MP's who have only been in office for a few months.

3.5 MILLION for medals and Platimum plated pensions. wow ! we're certainly getting our money's worth.whether you believe in the Queen or not you REALLY have to question the value of these medals. Money down the tubes?

It baffles me that military personnel, especially those with 20 years of service, have to be nominated and then go through a selection process before being presented a medal, while a MP (one with only 7 months) gets a medal just by virtue of being an MP.

What a Total waste of taxpayers money ...$7.5 MillionShe is too cheap to pay for her own celebrations..so we have to pick up the tab? That money could be used on our Senior Citizens.

What a pitiful display of arrogance and meanness. Imagine, the 4 Bloc members, dedicated to dissing Canada and collecting their pay, mostly paid from taxpayers. And Mr. Duceppe collecting $140,000 annually in pension. A shame.

So let me get this straight it is okay to celebrate the French Culture but not English Culture. While it may seem frivolous to some, it is the connection with our past that is being paid tribute too, nothing nefarious it's not like there is a province that makes it illegal to post signs in one of the two official languages of this country......Why that would be ridiculous.

Irene U

I consider the efforts of the Monarchy and the intention of awarding of these medals to celebrate those in our society to whom we should aspire; they demonstrate the positive qualities and actions that we want to encourage. Put the pettiness aside and celebrate their accomplishments and be happy that at least the Monarchy (and all those Canadians who made the nominations) recognizes the efforts of those dedicated to improving the lives of others.

Andrew in Vancouver

Returning the medals is a "no-brainer". Why would people who at one time had a completely different monarch want to celebrate the British one? The historical French monarchy is also an important part of this continent and country. Is Canada from coast to coast going to have a celebration of the French monarchy on a particular day? Some British people bought into the idea that a commitment to the monarch was binding on all future generations. That is ridiculous. Here is the thing. One battle a long time ago in reality did not make Canada exclusively British in spite of what some control freaks today have to say about it! Monarchists should stop the nonsense and quit trying to impose their particular queen on everyone else.

I have to agree with MP Nantel. Why are all the members of parliamnet getting medals? Are we to assume that all MPs are worthy of these just by virtue of being elected? These people are paid to do their jobs. It's not as if they are doing jobs no-one else would. It seems to me that most, if not all, the ridings ran more than one candidate. Ergo someone else could be just as deserving of that medal. I have no doubt that there are many, many unsung heroes found in the general population. Why were these medals not distributed to municipalities for presentation to deserving community citizens? Surely the government could trust local politicians to organize appropriate, democratic methods of deciding who is worthy of the intended honour. Handing out these medals as the government has done certainly decreases their level of importance and value in my eyes.

Dear Hon. Members,While you in the mood of giving back things, what about giving back or just don't accept other things related to Her Majesty and Canada like your pensions and other future perks to which you are entitled to...?That would be a nice gesture and help the country you are, no doubt love so dearly.

Are you going to return your gold plated pensions as well ? It only seams fair, since you don't want to be apart of Canada.

As a further to my previous post , issue the medals to every member of the Canadian Forces who has seen service in any war zone in the last two decades.

If this gesture is meant to impress anybody I am afraid it will only impressed the few people who already feel the way they feel , so a completely wasted gesture that only underlines how self centered the Bloc and the two NDP MP's are.

So are these qubec mps prepared to return their mp pensions and forego their mp pays as these are on behalf of her majesties tax payers.

Why don't you strike a medal for every person in Canada Mr. Harper?. I was always told that every Canadian is special, why do you and your people get to pick who is and give them a medal?. Just make sure when you give the Queen her medal it’s made out of 24crt gold, diamond encrusted with a platinum core. Would want the Queen to think that our tax dollars still aren’t pay her way in life.

So now is anyone still going to say that the Quebec wing of the NDP is not filled with a bunch of serperatists? Poor old Jack is probably spinning in his grave. Then again the left have never really been into the monarchy that much anyway. It's a part of our duty as a Commonwealth country. I find it more distasteful paying the salaries and pensions of the Bloc Quebecois MPs than shelling out for a royal visit.

With economic uncertainty and more job losses in the future $7.5 million can go towards everyday Canadians who are in financial constraints right now. The queen is only a figurehead, and the monarchy is a thing of the past focus on Canadians here not one woman who was born to an ultra privileged family in England!

Ah, the wheels are starting to come off the farcewagon. (MPs don't deserve medals, and, while honoring certain Canadians who "give" is nice, nifty, and noble, attaching the recognition to the Queen and her Diamond Jubilee is painfully contrived, politically sappy, and a lame justification for silly waste.)

1. Why give out medals to separatists for being outstanding citizens of this country? As far as I am concerned - Bloc means separatists which means anti-Canadian. Do not award medals to separatists.2. How can some people, especially Quebec be anti-monarchy? I have defended Quebec and the french language every time I comment on here - why ? because it's apart of our history - just like the monarchy. Whether people like it or not - we celebrate our history - english and french. Let's just accept it, and do it within a reasonable budget.

It would be wonderful if Quebec could also return the billions in equalization transfers paid by English Canada to the tune of 10 billion annually that they secure in the name of being a (smirk) "Have Not Province" (wink wink) while meanwhile operating mini-embassies around the world portraying themselves as an independent nation from Canada. Canadians are paying for Quebec's over-the-top entitlements like $7daycare and "free" IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatments amounting between $10,000.00-$30,000.00 "per" individual seeking these treatments. Is this any idea of "fiscal" austerity???
