OTTAWA — The federal government has announced an additional funding of $117 million over three years for its EcoEnergy Efficiency Initiative.

The program is meant to encourage consumers and companies to cut their energy use.

The new investment is in addition to an initial $78 million announced last September.

Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver says the investment demonstrates the government's continuing commitment to advance clean-energy technologies and make Canada a world leader in energy efficiency.

The minister also announced today that the popular EcoEnergy home-retrofit program had successfully reached its goal of 250,000 registered homeowners.

As planned, the program is no longer accepting new registrations.

Chris From Ottawa: There's more to the story. The eco-energy home retrofit program was so successful in 2010 that the program RAN OUT OF MONEY. You can do a search online and there's tons of info on it. It seems, success did not work in their favour - the program ran out of money, and other eco-energy and energy efficiency programs were forced find money in their own programs and give it up to bail out the home retrofit program. So, long story short, March 31, 2010 it was announced that the ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program was abruptly cancelled. It appears to me that the CONS didn't have enough money to fund the "over-success" of the program and wasn't ready to find more money and dive into it for another year until March 2011.

Of course, you can't cancel one of the more successful funding programs, helping Canadian households to undertake energy conservation related investments in their homes, without a outcry/backlash. They bring it back for 2011/2012 but this time with a cap. I'm pretty sure I saw the fine print somewhere on the website, of course they CONS aren't going to advertise the cap. I think most of us believe that success should be encouraged and not restricted...

But who knows... maybe it will come back 2012/13 or 13/14... hopefully with more $$$ - but I'm not holding my breath.

PLZ tell us what this money is for. The eco retrofit program was supposed to go untill March 31! If it ended at 250 000 then tell us THAT is the end, not march 31. Not to mention this 'year' the Cons said the program wold continue for started late and ended early, about 8 months worth. I guess no more vots are needed to buy for now, elections are far away. Lucky.

A Big Bob: Agreed,. My only question is why the Liberals didn't do it when they signed |Kyoto?

I thought the 'Harper Government' was trying to tame the deficit? All they have done lately is to announce new spending initiatives from Bison to Light bulbs.

Big Bob - I agree, it should have been done years ago - by the Liberals after they signed the Kyoto Accord. And we all know what the Liberals did to comply with Kyoto. I like what another poster said about dryers. And electric heat storage units were in use in UK thirty years ago.

Glad to see we are spending money on canadians to be more efficient. Under kyoto we would blow our budget sending our dollars to corrupt regimes as fines for failing to meet the impossible targets. In canada we need heat, this causes green house gases. If someone wants to help reduce their foot print, they can move to the tropics and live in a shack.

Saving water and electricity is rediculous....In Ottawa, because of the people saving so much water...The city has annouced it will increase the price of water usage because there is not as much money coming in to pay for all the employees, making clean water, and infrastructer......just another way to make money

Could be worse look what Liberal McGuinty in Ontario has done to the taxpayers in Ontario with his "windmills"... save energy .. right.. it costs more for everything since he did this. Ontario can put him into the same box as former NDP Bob Rae now acting Federal Liberal Leader... yikes!!!

@ Canadian Bob: Politically, it may be "enough said" if you were actually correct. According to our Auditor General, the G8/G20 ended up costing $664M, nowhere near the $1.1 originally budgeted. (Just bringing you up to speed, so that you can articulate your anti-Conservative arguments more factually.)

Well I'm a CON hater and I'll offer up some whit. This is a great program but too little too late. Shoulda been done years ago and the retrofits should be ongoing.

Time of use. What can electric heated appartment dwellers do to store heat when power is cheaper over night which can be used during the day. Will the gov't help those citizens to buy heat storage unit to heat main living area? This would shift a lot of power usage to night times.

If any country in the world can become more energy efficient it is definitely Canada. This is the way our tax dollars should be spent. We can become energy efficient and still create jobs. Good job by the Harper government to get the ball rolling!
