Canada's women's soccer team has netted a decisive victory, securing the squad a spot in the 2012 London Olympics.

Star forward Christine Sinclair scored twice to lead the team to a 3 – 1 victory over Mexico in a crucial Olympic qualifying match played in Vancouver Friday night.

Canada now joins the highly-ranked United States squad as one of 12 teams that will compete in the London Summer Games tournament.

Marcel Aubut, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee, praised the women for continuing the success they saw during the Pan Am Games when the women's team won their first-ever gold medal in soccer.

"They have maintained the momentum and will have the entire country supporting them all the way to the Olympic Games and beyond," he said in a news release.

During Friday's match-up, forward Melissa Tancredi booted Kelly Parker's pass from the edge of the six-yard box in a move that locked up Canada's third goal.

The goal elicited raucous cheers from a record crowd of more than 22,000 soccer fans at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium.

"We brought every part of the game this tournament. I think we brought the physical side, the finesse," she told The Canadian Press.

"We played around the back, we passed it around really good at times. I think we're on our way to becoming an excellent team."

Coach John Herdman has been credited with encouraging the team to reinvent themselves after an unsuccessful quarter-final exit from the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

"They've bought into a new style and a new philosophy and a new self-image of themselves as footballers," he told CP.

Veronica Perez scored Mexico's lone goal 67 minutes into the game.

Well done team - hard work by Schmidt, Scott, Sinclair and Tancredi among others but to beat the US tomorrow (and Germany, Japan and Sweden next summer),the kick and run philosophy has to be cut out of the Canadian WNT's game. When Chapman and other defenders, even LeBlanc, kick the ball, undirected, a mile out of their zone, it still comes back to haunt them. Modern soccer (watch Real Madrid, Barcelona FC, Porto, etc.) is a passing game with focus on one touch. We all know the feeling - kick it to Mars and the problem will go away - but if you hold on to it, you'll get a shot on their goal. It's not easy but given the great work ethic and ability, to grow, that our WNT has, it's possible. Best of Luck, JBM

Congratulations to the team and their new coach who certainly appears to have made a difference in their success! All the best to you in England!Craig W: This is a National team which has actually qualified for both the World Cup and the Olympics unlike the men's team which is having a much tougher time of it.Also, soccer does not traditionally have high scores so even winning over your opponent by 2 or 3 is a good score. Finally, a number of these players are from BC, so we are very proud, and Captain Christine Sinclair is considered by many, including the outstanding Abby Wambach of the US, to be one of the best all round women's players in the world. So just be a proud Canadian and appreciate their success, and cheer them and the other Canadian athletes who will be representing us in England.

Nicely done ladies. I'm not a huge fan of soccer, but I tuned in for a couple of these games. Conceding that my knowledge of the game is way less than that of die hard soccer fans, it still looked to me as though you were clearly the better team in that game. You've all worked really hard to get to where you are now. That's to your credit, even more so in a country so obsessed with ice hockey that there are not always a lot of fans at soccer games. Good luck going forward.

@CraigW: Dude, you don't have a point. Final score from Canada vs Mexico, 3-1. Final score from USA vs Guatemala, 14-0. Maybe next time instead of criticizing you should actually WATCH a women's soccer match.

Sinclair scored the goals and Tancredi set up both of them but to me Scott was the Canadian player of the game, never quit and was great in attack as defence.

Ahh, women's soccer, all the skill and excitement of women's hockey, without the distraction of scoring.
