The Boston Bruins' Stanley Cup hero, Tim Thomas, refused to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama during the team's meet-and-greet with the Commander-in-Chief Monday, saying the U.S. government is "out of control."

Thomas, who won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP during the Bruins' 2011 Stanley Cup victory, issued a statement Monday night after skipping out on the White House event. He is one of two Americans on Boston's roster.

"I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People," Thomas said in a written statement. "This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level. This is in direct opposition to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers' vision for the Federal government.

"Because I believe this, today I exercised my right as a Free Citizen, and did not visit the White House. This was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country. This was about a choice I had to make as an INDIVIDUAL."

Thomas said it would be the only public statement he would be making on the matter.

The Bruins goaltender was the key piece in their victory over the Vancouver Canucks, posting two shutouts in the seven-game series. He was just the second American to win the Conn Smythe.

Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli told Sports Illustrated that Thomas told him months ago he would not be attending because of ideological differences with the Obama administration.

Chiarelli said Thomas' position does not reflect that of the Bruins' organization, but he would not hold the goaltender's absence against him.

Thomas' political beliefs are not widely-known, but he has described himself as a fan of former Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck.

During the event Monday, Obama joked that Boston has had too much success with its recent winning streak across all four of North America's major sports leagues.

"The Bruins, the Sox, the Celtics, now the Patriots. Enough already, Boston," Obama quipped.

Thomas is not the first professional athlete to refuse to meet the president. Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison refused to meet with former president George W. Bush in 2006 and Obama in 2009 after his team's Super Bowl victories.

Good for Tim Thomas, here is a man of principle firm in his own belief, no hypocrite. Not easily swayed by people who are considered to be of high stature and are admired and revered by the public at large. He calls them as he sees them. To bad there are so few like him.

My respect for Tim Thomas just increased. I believe him to be a better man than hockey player now, and that says a lot about him as a man. Good on ya Tim !

My first thought was Thomas made a mistake. Then I remembered turning my back when Harper came near me at an event. I would never shake his hand!

What's with all the commenting trolls trying to get a rise out of people? He has all the right in the world to choose not to meet the president and if any of you have a tertiary education in politics you'll agree with him.

Good for him, i had a dislike for Tim when we played against him in the Finals, but now i respect him a tiny bit more because he sees the light, He shows that not every american hockey player is a oaf. Good on you

This isn't about personal choice made by an athlete - its about the lack of critical thinking going on. A democracy is based on an informed and engaged public, not one that worships political figures as pseudo-royalty. I commend anyone who has thought about the choices his nation has made and publicly and respectfully disagreed with them. Its called the exercising of free speech and both Canada and the US Constitutions guarantee that right as the foundation of our nations.

If the team wanted everyone to attend...a "command performance" let's say...he needed to be there. An individual's beliefs should not take priority over the team's direction.

Way to thumb your nose at the leader of your country, not to mention a time-honoured American tradition.Sure can't see Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, or Ray Bourque making such a classless, selfish move.

So we shouldn't listen to left wing actors but we should listen to right wing professional athletes? Can't we ignore both?

I'm happy that Tim stood up for what he believes in!!! Just because Obama is president DOES NOT mean he is god.

Those who support Thomas please answer this. When Mohammed Rauf refused to stand for the American anthem, was that his freedom talking? When Tommy Smith and John Carlos raised their clenched fists at the Mexican Olympics was that their constitutional right? His support of Glen Beck says volumes of his intelligent dissent. Please respond supporters.

Tim Thomas did the right thing. And for the partisan hacks here who are disagreeing, please try reading the entire article before commenting. He said "I believe the Federal government has grown out of control, threatening the Rights, Liberties, and Property of the People. This is being done at the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial level." Get that? He also said "this was not about politics or party, as in my opinion both parties are responsible for the situation we are in as a country". There you go! Anyone who disagrees with that is not paying attention (and considering all the prepubescent comments I see, lots of folks aren't paying attention).

His comments are dead on. About 96% of us here sadly have no idea what is going on in the US and the world. Where any of you paying attention to the fact that on New Years Eve Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act; which says all of the US is a war zone and any citizen can be taken away, tortured or made to disappear. The US constitution is almost dead. Only Ron Paul can save the day.

Well done Timmy. Lets not forget that he makes quite a bit of money for doing what he loves, playing hockey! For him to care about the regular Joe and stand up for what he believes is truly a class act. You think that any financial mess the gov't of the USA find themselves in really will ever affect Tim Thomas or his family. I think not. He is not being disrespectful to the president as his statement clearly says "this is not about political party affiliations" it's about standing up for what he believes. Lets hope the politicians will get the message and show some financial responsibility, although i seriously doubt they will.

An individual exercises their individual rights and the lefties are up in arms. Just goes to prove how small minded and ignorant the lefties have become.

Thomas displayed a blatant disregard for the office of the presidency and all of his team mates . He put his ego & arrogance ahead of all of them , disregarding the sensibilities of everyone involved - and then suggests that everyone respect his ... What an insensitive , self-centered display .....

Wow James Harrison and Tim Thomas lol that's some eilite company right there. At least they won't have to fumigate the White House for crazy now.

When a kid refused to shake hands with Harper and people refused to meet with Bush, the lefties held them up as heroes - but when its directed against the defacto king of all things liberal, its a problem. Good ole fashioned tolerance in action, I guess.....

Sure, Tim Thomas has the right to express his opinions. No one is saying otherwise. But that doesn't mean the rest of us have to like or agree with them.Refusing to meet the president, regardless of what party is in power, is rude.

To the comments about him representing Boston or the team I believe the man said it best, he is an individual and chose not to meet the president as he disagrees with the whole gov's actions. Good for him. He told his employer months in advance, I don't see the problem.

mike

He played for his country the USA, he did not play for Obama. I always thought that the USA stood for freedom and he expressed it well.Just remember it was the military who gave you the freedom to decide not the politicians. It was those brave men and women who gave their lives for your freedom.Hey this comming from a Canadian.Hold your head high as this was just a photo opp for Obama.

George Jablonski
said

Tim Thomas is a professional athlete by occupation but he is also an individual citizen. As such he has every right to refuse to be a political photo op for a president he doesn't agree with. Those critical of Thomas must not care too much about their own personal values. They expect him to compromise his.

Marc
said

His is not representing his personal views he is working for his employer and this is a photo op for the team. This player is the one out of control. He should be fined by the team and disciplined. But this is typically American. The only think of themselves and their rights and beliefs. The have no respect for authority and the highest office in their land. Disgusting. And to the bruins organization....for shame.

cehnehdeh in SK

Funny to see these comments from Cehnehdians about an American citizen who decided to make a personal statement about how his government is "out of control". The president is a citizen just like the American Hockey player. It's not like he offended the queen or something. To bad Cehnehdians are bred and taught to be so "polite". If they would stand up against the out of control politicians, socialists, and communists then we might actually accomplish something.

He can do whatever he wants but I've lost a lot of respect for him not to mention being let down by the fact he's a Tea Party activist.

Well I am a 'nucks fan. But have always said TT is a class act on and off the ice and very poised. He was the only person on the Bruins I thought had intelligence and wasn't just a goon. Guess I was wrong. He should have just called in sick! Was nice to hear though that there are only 2 Americans on Boston. Ha!

Pat the fact that he likes Glen Beck has nothing to do with this, and your comments simply put you in the same category as him; a 0 tolerance lunatic who dislikes anyone who disagrees with him. The issue here is respect for the Presidency regardless of political affiliation.

He is representing the city of Boston. Did the fans tell him not to go. It dispays an absolute disrespect for the Office of the President. What a role model.

Some of these comments make me laugh, he has the right to do and say what he wishes, as long as it does not offend people. I guess we lost that right also. Because it looks like he offended some people, dumb as they may be.

Good for Thomas: those who have strong convictions should be able to express them. It seems to me all the lefties in this country can call Harper all the nasties they can think up. Here is a guy who thinks right wing and showed it.

LS
said

Seriously? This is one of the most petty things I've heard in a long time. You had the opportunity to meet the leader of your country (whether you enjoy the individual or the administration is almost irrelevant!), and you skipped out because of "ideological differences"? Right, ok then. You just go back to getting hit in the head with pucks, and the rest of us will get on with our lives.

Actions can be deafening!

If more people stood up behind their convictions this would be a very different world but unfortunately there are too many sheep who would rather "dis" this man for having an opinion and doing something about it. Kudos to Tim Thomas.

BIG Bruins fan...Bigger Thomas fan....everyone has a right to their opinion and I commend Tim Thomas for standing his ground....how many people would turn down their invite to meet PM Harper or Dionne or Duceppe....same thing.....we ALL beleive in something that others don't and sometimes have to stand up for what we believe in.....Good for you Tim....

Tim Thomas should be ashamed of himself as well as the entire Bruin team. To be honored by an invitation by our President, having played on the U.S. Olympic team for OUR country, not Tim Thomas's and such vulgar and plain ignorant behavior should put him in a whole other category now and not worthy of the support I gave him during Stanley Cup. A tiny-brained red-neck can do anything he likes but that doesn't make him a man. SIckening performance of idiocy/
