A 25-year-old Moldovan dancer has told a TV station she was on the bridge of the Costa Concordia with the captain when it struck rocks near a Tuscan island and sank last week, killing at least 11 people.

Dominica Cemortan, who was not on the passenger list, has said in Moldovan media interviews and on her Facebook page that she was with Capt. Francesco Schettino when the accident was unfolding.

"He did a great thing, he saved over 3,000 lives," she told Moldova's Jurnal TV.

The Italian newspaper II Secolo XIX published photographs of her on the bridge of the ship with the captain.

She was apparently there to translate evacuation orders for Russian passengers.

Cemortan had worked as a hostess for Costa but was not on duty when she boarded Jan. 13 in the Roman port of Civitavecchia.

Her apparent presence on the bridge is the latest in a series of revelations as Schettino is investigated for manslaughter, abandoning his ship and causing a shipwreck.

Audiotape revelations

A new audiotape emerged Thursday of the first contact between Livorno port officials and the Costa Concordia - and the captain is heard insisting that his cruise ship only had a blackout a full 30 minutes after it had struck a reef.

The $450 million Costa Concordia was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew when it slammed into well-charted rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio after Schettino made an unauthorized diversion Friday from his programmed route. The ship then keeled over on its side.

Eleven people have been confirmed dead and 21 others are still missing.

The recording between Schettino and port officials began at 10:12 p.m. Friday, a good 30 minutes after the ship violently hit a reef and panicked passengers had fled the dining room to get their lifejackets.

Recordings of Schettino's conversations with coast guard officials after the ship capsized on its side have shown how he resisted repeated orders to return on board to oversee the evacuation.

In a new recording released Thursday, the first communication between the ship and Livorno port authorities, Schettino is heard assuring the officer that he was checking out the reasons for the blackout. But he doesn't volunteer that the ship had hit a reef.

Rather, the port officer tells Schettino that his agency had heard from a relative of one of ship's sailors that "during dinner everything fell on their heads." Passengers in the dining area reported plates and glasses slamming down onto diners.

"We are verifying the conditions on board," Schettino replies. Asked if passengers had been told to put on life jackets, he responds: "Correct."

Crew members and passengers alike have complained about the chaotic evacuation and the lack of direction from the ship's management.

Search for survivors

Divers, meanwhile, restarted the search Thursday for those still missing, but a forecast of rough seas added uncertainty to the operation and to plans to begin pumping fuel from the stranded vessel.

The divers were focusing on an evacuation route on the fourth level, now about 18 metres (60 feet) below the water's surface, where five bodies were found earlier this week, Navy spokesman Alessandro Busonero told Sky TG 24. Crews set off small explosions to blow holes into hard-to-reach areas for easier access by divers.

Officials restarted the search after determining the ship had stabilized after shifting on the rocks 24 hours earlier.

Also Thursday, seven of the dead were identified by authorities: French passengers Jeanne Gannard, Pierre Gregoire, Francis Servil, 71, and Jean-Pierre Micheaud, 61; Peruvian crew member Thomas Alberto Costilla Mendoza; Spanish passenger Guillermo Gual, 68, and Italian passenger Giovanni Masia, who news reports said would have turned 86 next week and was buried in Sardinia on Thursday.

Italian authorities have identified 32 people who have either died or are missing: 12 Germans, seven Italians, six French, two Peruvians, two Americans and one person each from Hungary, India and Spain.

Crew members returning home have begun speaking out about the chaotic evacuation, saying the captain sounded the alarm too late and didn't give orders or instructions about how to evacuate passengers. Eventually, crew members started lowering lifeboats on their own.

"They asked us to make announcements to say that it was electrical problems and that our technicians were working on it and to not panic," French steward Thibault Francois told France-2 television Thursday. "I told myself this doesn't sound good."

He said the captain took too long to react and that eventually his boss told him to start escorting passengers to lifeboats. "No, there were no orders from the management," he said.

Indian ship waiter Mukesh Kumar said "the emergency alarm was sounded very late," only after the ship "started tilting and water started seeping" in.

He was one of four Indians flown to New Delhi on Thursday, the first to return out of 203 Indians aboard the Concordia.

"The ship shook for a while, and then the crockery stated falling all over," said Indian Kandari Surjan Singh, who worked in the ship's galley. "People started panicking. Then the captain ordered that everything is under control and said it was a normal electric fault ... so people calmed down after that."

Among the missing are an Italian father and 5-year-old daughter. The girl's mother issued a fresh appeal to speed the search and for passengers who saw the pair to come forward to help determine where they were last seen.

"Don't stop, bring home my daughter. Get her out," Susy Albertini, 28, said on Italian television Wednesday evening after meeting with government and port officials in Tuscany.

William Arlotti, 36, had taken his daughter on on the cruise with his girlfriend, Michela Marconcelli, who survived. Marconcelli said she got separated from the other two in the evacuation.

Other missing include retirees Jerry and Barbara Heil of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, who were treating themselves after putting four children through college.

The ship's operator, Crociere Costa SpA, has accused Schettino of causing the wreck by making the unapproved detour, and the captain has acknowledged carrying out what he called a "tourist navigation" that brought the ship closer to Giglio.

Costa is owned by Miami-based Carnival Corp.

I guess the captain understands Russian quite well, since he was one of the first to evacuate. COWARD!!

Ok wait a minute. The ultimate blame goes to the Captain, but what about the First Office or 3rd mate? Prior to the accident, If there was wrong doing's going on, they should have done the right thing and reported the Captain. If the Captain ran for shore then the First Office should have taken command. Where was he??

On the bridge duty there would have been at least one senior officer, one junior officer, helmsman, lookout and maybe an apprentice officer. I think it says it all that none of the senior or junior officers are comming to their Captain's defence. Not to mention a complete breakdown in the chain of command, damage control procedures etc. It's fine to have all the training drills you want, but in a real emergency everybody panic's in their own language.

Welcome to the stage the lovely Dominica ! I mean bridge lol. I just knew there would be a woman hidden some where and involved in this story as it unfolded. How is she not on a passenger list ? A stow away in the Captain's cabin ? How can anyone in the position and care of 4000 people do a 'show off' maneuver with a $500 million dollar ship ? Is this a common in the industry ? lots of questions need to be answered !

The correct procedure for an upper deck watch in this situation...The Master, The Pilot, The Mate on watch, 1 Quartemaster ( steering...NO AUTO PILOT..!!) and at least 1 lookout.....and no one else....!!! Your duty is to ensure the safe conduct of your vessel and....to protect your ship, passengers and crew....at all costs...!!!! Is that so difficult to understand???? My watchkeeping students understood this very quickly when I taught back in the 1980's. Some of these students are now in Command of their own ships around the world.

Personally I expect better from someone who is Captain of a passenger ship. Surely he could have come up with something a little more imaginative. How about "I don't remember how I got in the lifeboat, I must have hit my head and lost my memory - what do you mean I'm the Captain? Hey do you know what my first name is - I can't recall?" A passenger ship Captain should be able to tell better stories to impress the children on board.

So she wasn't on the passenger list, but she was apparently on the bridge when they struck the reef.If that is the case, then how could she have been there to help evacuations orders? Why would they be evacuating before the accident occurred? If she was there strictly for evacuation orders, then she shouldn't have been there before the accident happened.I sense BS.

"A 25-year-old Moldovan dancer has told a TV station she was on the bridge of the Costa Concordia ...... Before it was too late and passengers have to take matters into their own hands. I understand the captain wishing to delay the launching of the lifeboats until after he beached the ship. But the "away all boats" never made it to the muster stations because the captain tripped ...

This guy is a piece of work. May he know the intimate details of a prison cell for at least 20 years if not more. Mind you, yes, lets presume he is innocent but one would then need to show actions becoming an officer... like, not being the first off the ship? Deviating a course for the chief chef, and having a 25 year old dancer "translating" wink wink on the bridge at the time. Yes, tripping into a life boat must also have happened.

I am still in shock about this. Everyday there is a new story from the Captain. I am not sure anymore what the truth is, but there are still missing 11 people, and the Coast Guard is there to find them. I think that the Captain should go there, and look for the people who are missing. I have never been on a cruise, and after hearing this, I know I will never go on a cruise. There are a lot of good captains out there and I am sure if you asked anyone of them they would all say that they would go down with the ship, instead of sitting on a rock and send someone else to clean up his dirty work.
God Bless all the volunteers and my thoughts and prayers are with the victim familes.

She is not on the passenger list, so who's to say she was even on the ship? Maybe she is lying, to create a story or to bring herself attention for financial gain. Romania isn't exactly a rich country. The captain without question is in a heap of doo doo and from the hundreds of stories that we are hearing are just stories, however that recorded conversation between captain and the coast guard makes it very obvious that he wasn't sticking around when his ship with all it's passengers was going down.

As a profesional ship Master, presently working in a related government department, I can only indicate that this captain has broken every single rule in the book.Unfortunately, as it is the case in many other instances, improvements will only be conditioned by trials and errors in which many more lives might be lost in the process. This has been the case with S/S Titanic and most likely this will be the case as a result of this tragic accident.

This "Captain" might have done a great job posing for pictures and dining with passengers, but there's more to the job than schmoozing guests. Sounds like he was in way over his head, and that responsibility lies squarely with the management of Carnival Cruises who put him in charge of the ship. It looks like he just lost it after he hit the rocks. First we heard that he abandoned ship before passengers, then we heard audio of the conversation with the Coast Guard officer, and now we hear that he was trying to cover up the seriousness of the situation by telling the Coast Guard it was only a power outage. Things are looking worse and worse for the guy. When the person tasked with keeping his/her head and coordinating damage control and/or the evacuation of passengers drops the ball, the whole system breaks. It's a miracle that more lives weren't lost.

I find it appalling that little or nothing has been heard from Carnival's CEO Micky Arnison, who owns 29% of Carnival Cruises, which in turn owns the Costa cruise Line. Why didn't he hop on a jet (he probably has a private one) to Italy at IMMEDIATELY at first news of this horrible tragedy? He chooses to stay back in Miami???? Could it be he's afraid to show the world that Carnival does in fact OWN Costa? His lack of response tells me more about the sorry leadership of this company than I wanted to know.....from the top on down....very sad.

It was a foolhardy manouver, completely unneccessary and reckless - no different than teenagers out with Daddy's car on Saturday night. Maritime authorities around the world should snap to attention on this tragic and stupid act and put into place severe measures for whatever officer of, or cruise company who believes they have the right to behave in such a reckless manner - including removal of a cruise lines licences to operate and seizure of their vessels.
