You won't be getting double when you order your next double-double at Tim Hortons, but you will be getting a little more. The coffee giant is boosting the sizes of all its cups, starting next Monday.

That means if what you really want is a small coffee, you'll need to order an extra small, because the current medium-sized coffee will now be called a small.

What is now a large coffee will be a medium, while the extra large coffee becomes the large size.

And taking over for the extra large is a new, giant 24-ounce cup. (At 710 millilitres, that works out to roughly 3 fluid cups. Best to plan your washroom pit stops before taking one of those on the road.)

The prices for each cup size will not change, just their names.

The new sizes are being phased in after the popular coffee chain tested the new sizes in a couple of markets over the fall and early winter.

"The response has been overwhelmingly positive," said Dave McKay, the director of brand marketing for beverages at Tim Hortons. "Our guests also told us that they love our small eight-ounce cup, so we will continue to offer that size (as the extra small)."

The cup size change also brings Tim Hortons sizes more in line with competitors, including Starbucks, Second Cup and McDonald's.

I always liked Tim's coffee but the cups were way too small to call large! About time they fixed this. Does anyone really order Extra small after waiting in line for what seems like forever. Whether you walk in or drive thru these lines are so crazy I asked for (and got) a Keruig Brewer and a couple GO cups for Christmas so it really doesn't matter anymore. Saves money and time to make it at home!!!

What good is a 240z cup when your bladder can only hold about 170z's. 240z's of bad coffee is still bad coffee, pay a little more for good coffee at Second Cup and no matter what size cup it is in it is still good coffee.

Can you people never have anything good to say about anything. What a bunch of complainers!!
Just say thank you Timmies and move on. Life is way much better when you are positive. Lets have a positive 2012 not a negative one all the time

I agree with the comments that their coffee is not up to par. Ever since they decided to centralize all production of their goods and coffee, the standard has dropped off significantly.

For those who say we will be paying more, I'm guessing math and english aren't your strong suit since it CLEARLY says, price will remain the same but you are getting more if you are ordering the same cup size as before.

FINALLY!!!! I have been emailing them for over a year asking them to make their Xlarge bigger. I love the stepped tea and can never get enough. Now I get more in my cup I am as happy as pig in the mud.
Now if only I could convince them to sell their steeped tea in the grocery stores like they do coffee. I still would buy at the stores.
Thank you Timmy's
Now can I please have an extra large steeped tea double, double :O)

Is this news worth of a spot on your webpage? Did Tim's pay for this? For some reason, and I'm not sure why, Tim's coffee is the only one out there that gives me heartburn every time I have a cup. I've heard other people complain about this too. What are they putting in their coffee?

I hate to admit it, but McDonald's serves a better cup of coffee for the money, and so does A&W. Tim's prices have been creeping up, and their quality has been diminishing. How can you legally run with the slogan 'Always Fresh' when most of your crap is made in a factory down east, freezed, shipped, and thawed-out at store level?

Actually McDonald's coffee is excellent. It has more flavour than Tim Hortons. Try it! You'll like (love) it!

Tired of Tim's

Tim Horton's needs to work on its product consistency. A large coffee with one sugar ordered on a Monday should taste exactly the same as a large coffee with one sugar ordered on a Friday. But with Tim's you never know what you're going to get. Imagine if each can of Coke from the same case tasted different. No one would ever buy Coke again. I certainly won't be buying Tim's again until they can fix this problem.

ok how hard is it to understand the concept. when you now say i want a large drink, you will pay for a large but will be given to you in an Extra large cup.

what's up with all the haters out there and what does the size of your cup have to do with obesity. if your used to drinking a large coffe now just ask for god damn medium and there you go. ppl always need something to complain about. i find this to be a great thing.

Good. Other than the old "extra large," Tim Horton's coffee cups have always been unexpectedly small. The "medium," in particular, was laughable.

I think this will bring the sizes more in line what people expect.

I would've just called the new size "Super Duper"...how fun would it have been to ask for a Super Duper Double Double...haha

They used those sizes in the US for a while. When I went to a Tim Horton's in New York state two years ago, they did the same thing. (No Cdn. Small; Cdn. Medium = US Small; Cdn. Large = US Medium; etc.)Still, I'd much rather brew my own coffee and bring it to work in a travel mug than go to Tim's. Their coffee is practically water. If I must buy some on the way, make it a Starbucks, please. :)

I have been in the Kingston TH and observed the confusion that has resulted in renaming the cup sizes. Not sure where David McKay gets his postive feedback from other then maybe the boot lickers.I know for me, a loyal customer it is nothing but confusing.Would it mot have been easier to just call the new cup "double X Large" duh?

Country Style has better coffee anyway. Plus, it's a Canadian company.

I can't believe people can't figure out what the sizing means. Are half the people below unable to read? Plain and simple, the cups are getting larger and you pay the same price. If you don't like it, than shut up.

Claude

One more reason NOT to go to Tim Horton as they explain to every customer at the till or Drive Thru how each cup has changed in size.. What was already a 10 minute wait will now turn into a 30 minute wait.. Amazing that McDonalds can turn around 12 cars in 2 minutes but Tim Horton can't get 3 cars in and out the the Drive Thru in 15.. And if you think the quality is better at Tim's think again.. I will go back to Starbucks and McDonalds and leave my Tim's card to rot..

Is it just me or does the moderator of these comments have no sense of humour? Tell me truthfully readers, didn't some of us think that the term 'cup size' did not conjure up visions of coffee at Tim's?

Glad I switched !!!

I stopped drinking the Tim Horton coffee in favour of McDonald's which is much more to my liking and it just tastes more like a better quality of coffee.

PVT

Timmies is only doing this because McDonalds coffee is better and you get more for less. I prefer McDonalds coffee to Timmies and when you factor in 'more for less' it's a no brainer where I go for my cup-o-joe.

Maybe with these changes they can also run an ad for littering. All's you see around here (NB) are empty Tim Horton's coffee cups that people toss from their cars while driving, it's disgusting !People, keep your litter in your car until you can toss it into the garbage !

Since when is 24 ounces "roughly" three cups? It's exactly three cups. Is there a generation that doesn't have any idea about the Imperial system and need to convert?

said

Maybe I am wrong but for me this is the worst coffee I have ever tasted, and what about the minature donuts that Tim Hortons sells, they keep a lot of their product behind glass that actually makes the product look larger than what it is.And is this news or free advertising for Tim Hortons???

Intelligent Liberal
said

All I know is a medium coffee will cost as much as a large used to, but I have figured a way to beat the Tim's name change price increase rip off. I will order a new Giant size coffee, but have them pour it in two new sized medium cups. heh heh heh that way each medium coffee will cost the same as the old medium price. Tim's is no match for my Liberal intelligence. heh heh heh

davecalgary
said

True that you get the same amount of coffee for the same price, the clever part is that many people will order what they used to order New Small (Medium now) instead of Old Small, so the total revenue will increase for Tim Hortons.Technically no one is being cheated, maybe a little mislead but if not for the above reason ask yourselves why would Tim Hortons do this change???Many other companies seem to use misleading ads & "changes of pricing while changing products" to get more custom too

When The Tim Horton opened his first coffee house it was to sell - coffee, tea and donaughts. The place doesn't sell the best coffee. Food is ok at times. Service...well, many times I have returned to the counter because something is missing or I have someone else's order. I don't know Tim Horton World...You should keep it simple. Coffee, tea and donaughts.

People please! They are just changing the cup size, not the price. It's a little confusing but, in the end, we'll adapt. We always do. Vive la Tim's!

Brew your own coffee at home and take along a re-usable travel mug! Tim Horton`s and the drones that line up idling in their cars for their fix day after day are horrendous for the environment. Economy in the toilet? You would never know by looking at the Tim’s line ups. What a waste of money! Even at $1 per day 5 days a week, over the course of a year you will have spent $260 on take out coffee! Does this sound sane? Never mind the garbage you have unnecessarily created. Shameful!

Liss
said

Just to clarify: you will still pay the same for the same amount of coffee! Your 10oz "medium" will cost the same as a 10oz "small". It is not a rip-off just because the names are changing.I'm glad they're keeping the small (changing to extra small). When I worked at Tim's, a lot of the elderly crowd preferred it. I wouldn't want to see them forced to pay more for extra coffee they don't want. Haha, but when someone unfamiliar with Tim's walked in and ordered a small...

Wow, some people will complain about anything, even those who, according to their comments, don't frequent Tim Horton's. If you're not a customer, kindly keep your comments to yourself. Yes, Tim's is in business to make money. Shocker!!! However, you still get the same amount for the same price, it just has a different size label. It's a change, that we'll all be used to after a few visits. Let's move on, shall we?

Intelligent Liberal isn't so intelligent.

Your medium will have the same volume as the old large you will order, and you will pay the same price as the large. So, lets say the old large was 14oz and $1, the new medium will be 14oz and $1. Nothing changes for you except what you call the size.

Kae
said

Intelligent Liberal -> you're not getting it. The price for a large coffee wont change, you'll simply get more coffee in your large. So if you will be now ordering a medium, you will actually pay LESS.

Scott

But will they educated the staff to actually stir these coffees when they mix them, or still leave all the sugar on the botton.

Andrew in Vancouver

I have been a Tim Horton's connoisseur for many years. For the last several years it has been an extra large almost every day. Believe me when I tell you I know when the coffee is even the slightest bit off. Tim Horton's is welcome to give me more as long as there is no change to the quality.

Galtha99

Why is it that the folks that post comments are usually very negative about almost everything? Get away from your computers for a while and get a life.

Tim Hortons keep screwing around with their items. This is how they make money, the regular customers don't know what they are talking about and still keep buying.... their coffee is so terrible that people keep coming back for more... that is called "marketing"....

Tim
said

I'm with Davis. Tim Hortons doesn't get my business anymore, their sandwiches are usually stale and flavorless. The soups are ok (sometimes) but the donuts, one of their staples, are just awful now. Vive le bottom line.

PBW
said

So, medium is small, and regular is large. Why must we have to wonder what to order when we go to a coffee shop? English is quite precise enough with three words: large medium, small. Just use standard size cups at every coffee shop and voila, problem solved. No doubt we will have to pay extra because this decision was subcontracted to a PR firm at thousands of dollars per hour - and they have to be paid. Unfortunately, it will be the public that pays, with highers prices. Just another way here to increase profits - and, incidentally, obesity. See Sunday's article on portion size on this site.

The key statement is "the price for each CUP SIZE will not change". That means the cup size cost of an extra large, now called a large, but costs as much as the old extra large, based on cup size. The addition of extra small to the line-up is not "extra" at all....it's actually puny small, not extra small, "extra" means more like extra large. The other addition is "Giant" - the biggest question about that is will it fit in a standard cup holder? I used to order a large, now I need to order a medium,. but pay the large price! What a rip-off!

Davis
said

Too bad they don't change the recipe for their gross coffee and food products (all arriving in a state other than "fresh"). Shame......

Ever wonder why we're all obese? 50 years ago a medium fries was as big as the small is now, Ever look at Wendy's "medium"? It's the old large, or the jumbo of 20 years ago. Who needs 3 cups of coffee?!

Tim Hortons must be a key CTV advertiser. It seems that even a corporate decision to change the decor in their restaurants' bathrooms is likely to become a "top story" on this website. (My apologies for not buying into the company's sappy "Canadiana" marketing schtick in which, supposedly, everyone in this country treasures their brand as part of our national identity.)
