A public schoolyard scrap between two prominent young Liberals in Toronto has left Liberal Leader Bob Rae literally cursing in public.

In a blog post published earlier this week, Liberal party member Max Naylor unleashed an avalanche of criticism at his "exceptionally close friend," Zach Paikin, the 20-year-old son of TVO host Steve Paikin.

Paikin is running for national policy chair of the federal Liberals at the upcoming convention in January and has secured the endorsement of Liberal MP and House Leader Marc Garneau, Liberal MPs Rodger Cuzner and Irwin Cotler and former Ontario health minister George Smitherman.

Naylor, the son of University of Toronto president David Naylor, says Paikin is actually far to the right of the Liberals on issues such as Israel and corporate tax cuts.

"If Zach Paikin is a progressive, then Rick Perry is an atheist," Naylor wrote on his blog, which features only the one post.

"Mr. Paikin represents a far right ideological position in this party. He has shown persistent ambition and a habit for policy crusades that would hurt a party in recovery."

Paikin called the post "childish" and full of "baseless allegations."

"If Max thinks he has nothing better to do in rebuilding the party right now than in engaging in this attack on my public image, my character and my integrity . . . then I think we've got a cultural problem in the party," he said in a telephone interview. "We've got to stop the political infighting in our party. What I want is for Liberals to come together to a build a brighter future."

Paikin said he was once "good friends" with Naylor, who he met in high school, but said they were never the "exceptionally close friends" that Naylor said they were.

Now Rae, whose frenemy relationship with Michael Ignatieff is well-storied, seemed less than impressed by the public infighting.

Rae curtly responded Wednesday morning to a Twitter user who said, "Young Liberals attacking each other in the press. Chrétien warning about hidden agendas. Rae, Gingrich, Kyoto... Um, what decade is this?"

"What bullshit is this?" Rae tweeted at Adam Goldenberg, perhaps hoping to gain some of that Pat Martin street-tweet cred.

Now that is not even the oddest part of this story.

A person claiming to be Zach Paikin's mother came to his defence in the blog post comment section.

A person claiming to be Zach Paikin's mother came to his defence in the blog post comment section, saying she was "deeply disappointed" in Naylor. But a spokesperson for Paikin later told CTVNews.ca that Paikin's mother never wrote the comment -- it was submitted by someone assuming her identity.

Wow Liberals have a problem today with "Potty mouth".... that's partly why Canadians rejected them, they are arrogant and out of control. Now with all this infighting they are still in free fall.

Another layer peeled away from the artificial veneer of respectability. Nothing but self-important types without a clue about what Canada needs. Only their own ego-centric agenda. Sad. Can the left bring anyone on board with a clue?

These comments are hilarious the neo con reformers talk like everyone voted conservative when the fact is that the conservatives were voted in by a measly 25% of the eligible voters.Next election the liberals will take a majority & the neo con reformers will fade into the dust to start a new conservative government.

Slap fight at dawn, bring your seconds. Yawn. Liberals need to swear to appear tough. Conservatives rarely swear as it is vulgar and if we do there is a good g-d reason. Street cred for Rae? Tthat naif. That was the funniest line in all the news tonight. Thanks CTV

I am sure we look as "Mickey Mouse" in the eyes of the world as we do in the eyes of Canadians who listen to this crap everyday.

Would all you people stop using the word "socialist". If we're going to divide the political landscape using 1930s terms, then one must logically call the Conservatives FASCISTS. Is Canadian political dialogue really bettered using these provocative terms???

Of course there would be no infighting in the Conservative fold. You must adhere sheepishly to the Party line. Voicing a differing opinion is a no-no.Hmmm! Sounds like the Conservative members of Parliament and not youngg Cons!

This party is not relevant anymore. Why give them any print or airtime? Does the left leaning media in this country hope that they can some how revive them?

Scions of Toronto's cultural elite running for an irrelevant position in a dead political party locked in a trivial dispute that is too pathetic and impertinent to even be funny but also too fitting to be sad. These here Grits is cooked!

For goodness sake why does rae not go away and shut up. He is a sore loser, still cant believe the lIbs are at the bottom of the trough, altho he is still an NDP'r at heart. Good old Bob no wonder your hair is white, please retire and give us all a rest, so we dont have to keep listening to you blathering on about nothing.

I never cease to be entertained by what entitled children choose to do with their seemingly endless spare time. Perhaps this 20 year old should focus on developing skills that he could use as "National Policy Chair," or is being the son of a TV host sufficient?

LOL!! Good for you "Patrick". If the Liberals want to rebuild the party, the first thing they have to do is send all the socialists to the NDP.That's where socialists belong, and the exit of the lefties from the LPC is the only hope of us every having a centrist party. DOn't foget folks. The Liberals purged their party of peole they thought were to conservate. So that's when I left the LPC,to vote and support the Conservatives. A bit to far right some times. And a leader with the charm of a house plant. But it beats the crap out of more socialism, hands down. If the LPC ever want me back, they need a leader who IS a centrist.A peson along the lines of John Manley would have a shot at my vote. But this socialist party version of the party, not so much. In BC we call them "NDP Lite". I can only hope "Partick" can take the rest of the sociaists with him.THEN,and only then can I reconsider the LPC as a choice in a federal election.

I have to agree with Palkin, Naylor lacks respect for his Liberal peers and has yet to realize that a political party would function best with everyone being on the same page. If it is said that politics should be left to adults, then at least make sure that the younger generation involved has at least some form of maturity. Palkin would serve as a great fit for national policy chair; Max Naylor on the other hand is an absolute joke.

@Diane... Bob Rae was originally a Liberal, who found it politically expedient to become an NDPer for a time, but is back "home" once again. To no one's surprise but his own, the party is rife with in-fighting and backstabbing.

Poor Bob Rae He wants to be a LIberal but the NDP in him just won't be quiet!. Why does he not just cross the floor and lead the NDP?. He will never help the Liberals get elected again because he is too far left. The LIberals should get a new leader fast if they ever expect to be official opposition again.

Liberals really scare me, especially since embracing Bob Rae. Interesting tho that they criticize one of their own for "right leanings". No free-thinking allowed in a party that that accepts only the brain-washed hard left.

To hear the language coming out of the temporary leader of the Liberal Party is disgusting but NOT surprising. He should hook up with Pat Martin NDP and further his vocabulary (he has a few choice words also) but doubt Bob RAE needs anyone. He is totally unbelievable and an embarrassment to the Liberal Party of Canada (what is left of it) - time to move aside and let some young blood in

This is perhaps why the Conservatives do not have an official youth wing. It just creates a sandbox for youth where there is more politics and conflict. Youth should be incorporated into the whole, real political process... working together with adults and seniors, not put into their our little sandbox to fight against one another.

Naylor and Paiking both say they're doing what they do in order to rebuild the Liberal Party. But all that they're squabbling has done is cement the notion that the Liberal Party is nothing more than a feuding ground for the privileged and power-hungry. Disappointing.

Since Naylor isn't even running or the National Policy Chair of the Liberal Party of Canada, I believe what Max's mom said settles this issue. Besides, they are just young Liberals, it's just pretend politics they are doing in school so who cares?

If the Liberals are going to be putting 20 year olds in senior party positions, then the Liberals are not a party to be taken seriously. With all due respect, they may well be very intelligent individuals, but senior positions require the seasoned well roundedness of someone who has 'been around the block' as they say. The younger individuals tend to be full of ideoligies that are good in principal but don't fare so well in implentation. Very very foolish.

Hahahahaaa!!! Liberals = Losers
Just proves the point that the Liberal Party only attracts people who are interested in self promotion and playing the political game. It's all about a power to this lot. They are not interested in public service at all.

Bodes well for the future of the liberal party. Hope they are getting used to 3rd place. In Sask. they were solidly in 2nd place several years ago with a good chance of making a run @ the top job...then egos got in the way they no longer exist...not that anybody here cares!

Watching the politically entitled young Liberals, with their virgin egos, battle "publicly" like children brings a tear to my eye. (Naturally, because Zach Paikin would, rationally, like to see the party step to the right, into the intelligent mainstream, and become electorally competitive again, the stubbornly determined and woefully misguided left-wingers in the band want to stick to playing the same old tune that got the Liberal party almost entirely booted off Parliament Hill. Max Naylor, for more valid reasons than one, needs to give his nubile political head a shake.) By the way, "Back-Row Bob" Rae will never enjoy any form of legitimate "street cred." He's a career political weenie who's unsure of his own ideology.

I was involved in the Young Liberals back in the early 90s when I was a university student and held a number of positions both federally and provincially. I can assure you that this sort of stuff happens all the time -- the only reason it didn't make the news is that the two guys are prominent and one aired his beef on social media.Accusations of ideological purity -- I myself was attacked thusly -- are de rigeur as everyone tries to present themselves as the "most Liberal/Conservative/New Democrat, etc". You wouldn't believe the stuff that is said behind closed doors. Kind of funny in retrospect.

Infighting and attacks are all fine and dandy in politics. Just keep that stuff out of the public eye when it concerns only the people in your party. Having the (interim) leader of the Liberals post profanity, using social media does not lend itself to getting "street cred". Rather, it points to a lack of communication skills.

The real problem with Liberals is their far to liberal. Progressive means socialism, pure and simple. It's no surprise many common sense ideas are thought as too far right wing?? The Liberals are clearly no longer a centrist party, but rather than move themselves back to the middle they keep trying to force the middle of the political spectrum to the left. (socialist)
