An Alberta Mountie who was wounded in the line of duty on the weekend has been released from hospital.

Two Mounties were hit by gunfire during a standoff at a home outside of Breton, southwest of Edmonton.

The unidentified officers were wounded in the early hours of Sunday morning. One suffered "superficial injuries," the other "more serious" injuries, RCMP Sgt. Tim Taniguchi told reporters on the weekend.

On Monday, one of the officers was discharged, while the other remained in hospital.

The RCMP had been called to the home in Breton on Saturday following a report that a 35-year-old man had been shot.

The injured man was taken to hospital and police spent hours negotiating with the people who were still inside the home.

At about 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, the shooting started.

"There was an exchange of gunfire between police and from unknown individuals from inside the residence," Taniguchi told reporters Sunday.

A few hours after the RCMP officers were shot, a man and a woman from inside the home were taken into custody. Both were taken to hospital, but police have not said if they, too, were shot.

Taniguchi left a message on his voicemail Sunday that indicated police would not be providing further updates on the case until Monday.

The RCMP's serious crime unit is handling the criminal investigation, while Alberta's Serious Incident Response Team is probing the police actions during the shootout.
