It can tell you where to dump a body, answer a marriage proposal and will gladly share the meaning of life.

But when it comes to abortion and birth control, Apple's voice-activated digital personal assistant Siri has been accused of being curiously uncooperative.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says the assistant on Apple's iPhone 4S draws a blank when asked to locate an abortion clinic and in some cases will refer users to a pregnancy crisis centre.

"If Siri can tell us about Viagra, it should not provide bad or no information about contraceptives or abortion care," the group wrote in a statement.

The ACLU has launched a campaign asking Apple developers to program Siri to provide more thorough information about reproductive health services for women.

For its part, Apple has denied any accusations that its new software has a pro-life bias. Company spokespeople have told several U.S. media outlets that the lack of information isn't intentional.

Siri, which the company says is still in beta, is programmed to register a user's voice and respond to questions with the earnestness of a keen employee. In the U.S., it can find restaurants, call up directions and text when a user's hands are busy.

Siri can direct users to locations in the United States, but isn't yet programmed to provide locations in Canada.

That means, any Canadian woman who asks Siri to point out the nearest abortion clinic north of the 49th parallel is out of luck for a different reason altogether.

When the software debuted with the iPhone 4S in October, many users noted that Siri has a wry sense of humour, even answering playful questions such as "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-choice America Foundation, praises Siri's deadpan humour but says the virtual assistant needs to offer serious answers when it comes to reproductive health.

"Although Siri is not the principal resource for women's health care…it is important that the women who are using this application not be misled about their pregnancy-related options," Keenan wrote in an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Abortion isn't the only women's health issue Siri seems to come up short on. Users have reported receiving no answer when telling the software: "I need contraception."

Now I've heard it all. So, the pro-abortion activists are going to 'bully' Apple into including their agenda under the argument , "If Siri can tell us about Viagra, it should not provide bad or no information about contraceptives or abortion care" ??This statement makes no sense and I'm sick to death of these types of agendas being forced down everyone's throats ! Grow up ! Not everything is about you and your agenda !!!!!

Here is a stat that everyone should know about. Worldwide, due to the availability of ultrasound technology, so many female fetuses are being aborted that there will be a shortage of women to the tune of 160,000,000 women. In some parts of the world already there are between 120 and 130 men to every 100 women. What is abortion doing to the human race? I believe we are destroying the human race.

In other news, the fallout continues from the Iranian 'students' storming the British Embassy in Tehran, there is talk of open war between Israel and Iran over its nuclear program, the world economy continues to be fragile and Hilary Clinton continues her landmark visit to Burma. But all this is irrelevant because a talking phone that can read texts, give you the weather, and tell you where the closest burger joint is won't tell you where to find the nearest abortion clinic.

So uh, what IS the answer Siri gives to : "How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" --------------------As for the actual issue of the story: If you're dumb enough to have to rely on Siri for things as important as Reproductive health then the world would probably be a better place if you don't re-produce...The information on Abortion and Contraceptives have been around for DECADES in the phone book, Online or ya know, from your DOCTOR... Quit being lazy and relying on technology

Ridiculous! Who says "I need contraception"? Most people just say condoms. What are the odds that some Apple Developer needed an abortion, with the amount of time they spend in their labs?

Maybe Apple realizes that most people in the US and almost half of Canadians are pro-life. Many more are pro-life to some degree, such as those who think that abortion should only be available after rape or incest or when the child is severely handicapped. You'd not be calling abortion clinics in those situation, you're own doctor would make a referral. I think that this time the market is ruling. No one's rights are threatened here. Abortion clinics have equal access to the internet, so anyone looking for one can use Google.

I see a lawsuit beng filed against Siri. It's the American way. Maybe someone will inform the American Civil Liberties Assoc that iphones are a global product. I'm thinking include a world map with each iphone sold in the USA. Next they'll take issue as to whether Siri is a Democrat or Republican

Oh brother ... The ACLU should give it's collective head a shake. It's like the Unions and the Canadian Human Rights Commissions ... they've served their purpose, abused them, and now it's time for them to go!

So what that it cannot point the direction to an abortion clinic. Someone who needs that is seriously in need of Human help and must be insane to rely on a cell phone for that information and in my opinion needs psychological help if they rely on a cell phone software to help them with this decision. This is the most ridiculous politically correct story of this 21st century so far.

Seriously???? If this is what they are spending their time focusing on, they seriously need to get a life...or is that phrase now taboo as being offensive??? Are there not more important things to deal with rather than pointing out the obvious...that a computer program is not always accurate when it is asked a question? If one asked for the closest Chinese food, should one be shocked and cry foul if it directed you to a East Indian restaurant instead? Seriously, get a life.

The other thing siri does not do is answer gay marriage is not legal in all provinces? PLUS it says nothing when asked why women are less paid then men in the workplace. This machine must be banned since it mysognistic and intolerent.
