Note from editor: On Wednesday's edition of Canadian Originals on CTV National News at 11pm, reporter Genevieve Beauchemin puts the spotlight on Indo-Canadian comedian Sugar Sammy.

He pokes fun at cultural differences, performing both in English and French in his irreverent style. He's blossomed into a rockstar on the international comedy circuit.

Here's Genevieve's blog:

I met Sugar Sammy at a restaurant to chat about his upcoming show, a meeting filled with laughs, but also filled with conversation about what performing back home means to him.

Sugar Sammy was born in a culturally-diverse neighborhood in Montreal. He says himself that he is a product of Quebec's language law, Bill 101: he went to French school, picked up English on the streets, and learned Hindi and Punjabi at home.

When he was still in grade school, Sugar Sammy saw Eddie Murphy's comedy special "Delirious" and says right there and then, he knew he wanted to do "that" for a living.

He's been doing "that" for 15 years, and has now performed around the world. His jokes focus on cultural differences and on relationships, a legacy he says of his early years.

The internationally-renowned comedian will be offering his hometown fans a gift for his ninth birthday (yes, nine. He was born on February 29th, leap day. Juvenile jokes, you say?)

He will unveil a bilingual show, going from one language to the other in a seamless way, capturing the essence of what Montreal is to him. He has performed in English and French (Punjabi and Hindi too), never really playing it safe with cultural sensitivities.

A sample of some of Sugar Sammy's comedy:

Last year, for an awards show skit, he was paired up with Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois. He poked fun of her English, she made fun of him for living with his parents, asking him whether he had a taste for "independence". Uneasiness and laughs all at once, on both sides of the cultural divide.

He cracked plenty of jokes, but wouldn't give me a sample of what's in the show: "My family too has been asking for a sample. ‘I don't think I am going to buy tickets to the show,'" Sugar Sammy says putting on an accent, "but if you could give me a clue, wait a minute talk to the camera, son," and soon the videos are being sold all over the world."
