JACKSON — Georgia inmate Troy Davis has been executed for the killing of an off-duty police officer in a case that has drawn worldwide support over his claims of innocence.

Courts consistently ruled against him, however, and the officer's family says they finally have justice after 22 years.

Davis was pronounced dead at 11:08 p.m. Wednesday. He was put to death for the 1989 killing of Mark MacPhail. The officer was shot to death while rushing to help a homeless man being attacked by Davis and others.

Davis' global support came from high-profile advocates, including a former U.S. president, the pope and celebrities.

Just read "The Innocent Man" also by Grisham. The true story of a man at one point only 5 days away from execution. He was later found not guilty!

Man, we do dote over our murderers! By statute, death should come within 30 days of the Supreme Court finding in favour of the prosecution. That would put a stop to this cost to the tax payer and interference by international busybodies.

Capital Punishment when there is doubt is disgusting. Where is justice? Change his sentence to life in prison. We should all be ashamed if he is executed unfairly. This is an example where the government is not serving the people.

nothing in this world is absolutely, positively beyond a shadow of a doubt. there is always a lingering question to everything.before forming an opiniion why not read the trial transcript?

I think it is absolutely disgusting that a man can be wrongly convicted for a crime that no one can prove he committed. Considering that there were 9 alleged eyewitnesses who claimed to have seen Davis shoot that officer—7 of which who recanted their statement and admitted that they were pressured by the police to say Davis committed the crime is proof enough that this man has been caught up in a judicial system that is determined to racialize, discriminate and deny all people of colour their rights to a fair and just trial. The Prison Complex is not something we have imagined...There is a reason why certain groups are overpresented in prisons. Everytime I read this article, I feel like I am reading from the pages of To Kill a Mocking Bird...after all these years of crying out for justice for all, where have we reached!??! Sad.

1989!?!?!? Wow, we've gotta work on speeding this process up and making it a LOT cheaper.

If there is any question of his guilt the execution should be post-poned! The day will come when someone will conclusively prove that they have executed an innocent and then the whole system will come tumbling down. The system will then be the murderer...Just read John Grisham's the Confession - certainly makes you think!
