A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Vancouver Island on Friday afternoon, sending out tremors that were felt hundreds of kilometres away.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake, which was initially measured as a magnitude 6.7 tremor, hit at 12:41 p.m. local time.

The epicentre was a point 23 kilometres underground, south of Port Hardy about 50 kilometres off Vancouver Island's west coast.

The exact magnitude of the quake was revised later in the day as seismologists in Canada and the U.S. analyzed data collected from the temblor. A number of smaller aftershocks followed.

There were no immediate reports of damage, and no tsunami was expected from the quake according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.

Residents as far south as Seattle and as far east as Kelowna, B.C. reported feeling the quake.

"It has been widely felt -- mild swaying -- but there are no reports of damage or injuries anywhere," said Heather Lyle, who runs province-wide earthquake drills with Emergency Management BC.

One of the closest communities to the epicentre was the tiny town of Tahsis on the west coast of Vancouver Island, where Captain Meares Elementary Secondary was evacuated as residents felt their homes shake.

Silvie Keen, the chef and owner of Nootka Gold Bed and Breakfast, told ctvbc.ca that she lost power for about five minutes.

"It was a little scary. The dog and I went under the table," she said. "It was long. It seemed like about 15 seconds, and the house was a little bouncy."

Keith Pistell was working at the Canadian Tire in Courtenay, on the island's east coast, when the quake hit.

"I really started moving, and you could feel the walls of the building started to shake," he said.

Meanwhile in Vancouver, more than 270 kilometres east of the quake's epicentre, CTV's Sarah Galashan reported that workers in her office building "could feel a little bit of movement."

Some residents in Richmond, B.C., also felt the quake, she said.

Paul Laustsen, a spokesperson with the USGS, said an earthquake of this magnitude would typically cause "moderate to heavy shaking."

Depending on how long the shaking lasted, "it could feel like a truck hitting the side of a home," he told CTV News Channel.

Several fault lines run through the area, Laustsen said, from California north to Alaska.

By late Friday afternoon there had already been a half-dozen aftershocks, with the strongest reaching a magnitude of 4.9.

In Victoria, seismologist John Cassidy said the aftershocks could continue for the next week.

"An earthquake of this size we see typically every decade or so, and generally in the offshore region," he said by phone. "This is a very seismically active zone."

Felt it in Port Alberni - thought the cats had knocked something over, but then it kept knocking and the windows rattled. Didn't know it was a quake until later in the day, but at the time I did think "where would I go if there was an earthquake?" Makes a person think seriously about getting an emergency kit and a plan in place, just in case.

I was at the 3rd floor of SFU Burnaby Library. I can feel the ground shake for like few seconds. And then I can actually hear the metal bookshelves hitting each other few another few second. I actually hope there is aftershock because I show it is not the frontshock and there is no larger magnitude earthquake. It is the sad lesson from Japan...

I live in Quesnel BC- I was home for lunch and suddenly a large wind chime which hangs in my living room started to swing and chime softly - there were no windows open and no fans on, so I was mystified. I didn't hear about the quake until later, but the time of the quake
was bang on to when the chimes swayed.

I was in my 5th wheel at a trailer park in Courtenay and it felt like someone really heavy was jumping up and down on the bumper - everything was swaying like rolling waves on the ocean and it felt like 10-15 seconds long. Felt two separate events minutes apart! I've been in some 7.4 mag quakes in my past but this one sure felt different... rolling from the west coast, not up and down.... certainly not side to side... didn't feel like our subduction zone event - but a totally different epicenter.

I felt it on Quadra Island. I was on the 2nd floor of my house when things briefly swayed and my head felt kind of dizzy, like I'd been on a PNE ride. An earthquake never even crossed my mind. A few minutes before that, my dog had started following me around like he was glued to my ankles. Motivated me to complete my earthquake kit!

Live in Kitsilano, neighborhood just south of downtown Vancouver, and I didn't feel or hear a thing. Anybody have an explanation as to why hardly anybody downtown felt a thing, yet somehow the people farther away from the epicenter (Burnaby and Surrey) seem to be falling down the stairs and spilling their tea?

I'm downtown Vancouver 27 stories up. We have floor to ceiling windows in our office and I heard a weird cracking noise behind me (like a settling house). I assumed it was a window cleaner, turned around and saw no one. Shortly after that a co-worker had informed me that there was an earthquake on the island. What struck me as odd was that I felt dizzy and faint afterwards but no one else in my office reported feeling the same way. Kind of scary. Earthquakes are no joke. Anyway, we're all safe so that's good :)

We're in one of the newer buildings at UBC campus (on the 4th floor) and everyone here felt the two quakes. The first one reminded me of an undulation (I have vertigo and thought I was getting an attack)... the second one reminded me of how I felt stepping on terra firma after a week on a cruise ship. Wobbly and unsteady. The window-blind sashes were swaying quite a bit.

I was on the 16th floor of a downtown Vancouver office building. I could feel the swaying, my door was moving, the blinds were moving. At first I thought I was coming down with something. The swaying of the building caused many co-workers to also feel nauseous and dizzy. It was pretty scary.

Same odd feeling I have had during my stay in Tokyo last month. There were 2 earthquakes during my stay in Japan. So then I was sure it was an earthquake.

In geological terms, Mount St. Helens happened a few minutes ago. Don't think for a second the Japan quake and this quake are unrelated. I fear the big one is yet to come. 6.7 is relatively small for the region. The only upside is that we're dealing in geological time frames which means the big one could be another 100 years from now. Hope everyone is safe.
