Health Canada is once again reminding Canadians of the health risks of buying and using "fresh" semen donations, this time pointing out the risks of obtaining the semen through the Internet.

The agency says that donor semen obtained through websites may not have been appropriately screened and tested, and therefore may not be safe.

Health Canada warns that Canadian women should be cautious of websites advertising "fresh" semen with claims that the semen donors have been properly screened and tested.

"Such claims may not be true," the agency says.

While a number of websites offer fresh donor semen to Canadian women, distributing fresh semen is actually prohibited in Canada.

Under Canadian law, donated semen must be cryopreserved (frozen) and quarantined for a minimum of six months. Donors must be screened and tested before the donation and six months after, in order to minimize the risk of transmission of infectious diseases.

"Fresh semen" or semen donated outside those rules could pass on a range of infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B or C, syphilis, chlamydia, or gonorrhea to both mother and any child born through the use of donor semen.

"Canadians who are considering using donor semen for assisted conception should consult their health care professional," Health Canada Advises.

Health Canada maintains a list of semen processors and importers that are subject to regular inspections.

7 years and $25,000 later, we are the proud parents of a bouncing baby boy. If you are laughing at this article, it is because you have not known the heartache and frustration of infertility. Faced with a desperate situation people sometimes resort to desperate means. Not to mention that there are plenty of sharks out there willing to pounce on people when they are at their most vulnerable. We were fortunate we could afford the expensive treatments at a recognized medical facility. Many are not. Desperate and broke, they will try anything to have a baby. Quit making fun of a situation you are very lucky not to have to be in.

lol really?

Sure Health Canada talks about the perils of online semen... however don't you find it peculiar that they don't mention anything about purchasing fresh zygote online.

Can you imagine these mommies explaining to their kids where babies come from? What's really sad is that our tax dollars are actually being used to tell these idiots what should be obvious.

People use online shopping because of the convinience and sometimes better value. I wonder what is the factor in this case.....

Have we, as a society, really come to the point where we require Health Canada to tell us this is a bad idea. Don't get me wrong - I love ebay. But semen?

Seriously!! Thank goodness for Health Canada or who knows what we would buy. I'm assuming that this warning is due to the fact that people who can use a computer and have bank accounts are actually buying semen online. and to think a large percentage of the human race can't feed themselves.

There are alot of ignorant comments here. Having known friends who had to deal with extreme infertility, purchasing sperm was the only available option. While yes this is a little gross and unconventional, it IS the ONLY option left for some couples. Please consider all reason before posting comments that clearly show that you have not considered those who are in need of these types of servies. Really people!

I really hope anyone out there who wants to have a child through less traditional means will heed this warning. Good grief!

Damn internet .....always putting us entrepreneurs out of business. I was just planning on opening a small store that sells fresh semen, made daily. Kind of like a U-Pick farm where you come in and get your own right from the source. I guess the only thing I can do is compete based on freshness (mine would obviously be newer) and maybe offering free samples.
