Jack Layton returned to the House of Commons for the last time on Wednesday, his body carried by an honour guard of eight RCMP pallbearers into its foyer, where Canadians of every stripe paid their respects to the late NDP leader.

Thousands of Canadians including family, friends and dignitaries lined up in the wind and the rain as the line inched towards Layton's flag-draped casket.

Some blew kisses, some saluted, others crossed themselves or curtsied as the procession moved through the House where Layton is lying in state.

Layton, who died on Monday at age 61, after his battle with cancer, will remain in Ottawa for two days before his state funeral in Toronto on Saturday.

"It is truly an incredible sight," said CTV's Mercedes Stephenson, reporting from outside Parliament.

"It is raining on and off. It's windy. But people are still coming out and braving this weather because they want pay to their respects."

Layton's casket was carried into the House on Wednesday morning, followed by his wife Olivia Chow, his children Sara and Michael, granddaughter Beatrice and others.

A lone piper played as the casket made its entrance. Further inside, the parliamentary chamber stood empty, a cluster of white flowers marking the seat Layton briefly occupied as Leader of the Opposition.

"He was the captain of our ship," said Ottawa-area NDP MP Paul Dewar. "He took us to where we needed to go. He steered us well."

Michael Layton, a Toronto city councilor like his father once was, thanked Canadians for their outpouring of support through his Twitter account. "Truly an amazing sight on Parliament Hill. My sincerest thanks to all who waited and are still waiting to give their condolences," he wrote Wednesday afternoon.

The first hours of the ceremony were reserved for family, colleagues and VIPs, including Gov. Gen. David Johnston, Laureen Harper and Liberal interim leader Bob Rae.

On Thursday, another public viewing will take place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m, followed by a 15-gun salute as his remains depart for Toronto. Layton will lie in repose in Toronto's City Hall before a closed-casket state funeral starting at 2 p.m. at Roy Thomson Hall. Torontonians will have the chance to pay their respects from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.

From sunrise to sunset the CN Tower will be lit with orange lights on Saturday in honour of the fallen NDP leader.

Toronto's otherwise grey City Hall was by Wednesday afternoon itself lit up with messages, hand-written in multi-coloured chalk, in remembrance of Layton. Many echoed Layton's campaign speeches during the recent election and his parting letter to Canada. "And we'll change the world" read one. "Jack Layton was the reason I started voting," read another.

Layton was a city councilor in Toronto from 1982 to 1991.

Usually, state funerals are reserved for current and former prime ministers, governors general and current cabinet ministers, but Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered a state funeral out of respect for Layton.

Speaking to reporters in Nunavut, Harper recalled his last meeting with Layton amid the fractious end of parliament. "I could see at that point that he was a much sicker man then he was before the election," said Harper. "But even at that moment, with the big personal challenge he had in front of him and with the big political battle we had going on between us, he was still full of optimism and goodwill." Harper is expected to attend the funeral.

CTV parliamentary correspondent Richard Madan, who covered Layton's campaign during the federal election earlier this year, said he expects a large turnout at all the events surrounding Layton's funeral.

"Jack Layton had this amazing ability to connect not just with his political rivals, but with general people he met from coast to coast," Madan said.

"He was a voice for unity. He was always trying to bring people together," agreed former NDP strategist Robin Sears, speaking to CTV News Channel.

Sears predicted that henceforth, "a lot of us are going to be asking ourselves 'What would Jack have said?' 'What would Jack have done?' ... He will become I think an icon for people to test their future behaviour against."

I think that no matter what political ideology you conveniently umbrella yourself under, most will agree that what set him apart from other politicians, and probably the reason people will miss him, is his integrity. Most politicians sell their souls a hundred times over to get to where they are. Harper did. Martin did. Chretien did. Mulroney did. Ignatieff did. Dion did. Most of the people that wind up leading or attempting to lead our country are not people I would welcome into my own home. Layton was a notable exception and I think that this is why the outpouring and shock has been so overwhelming.

Not surprising to see the tasteless comments from (many) conservative voters who seem to be reveling in the death of a human being. Only because he had different beliefs.

The NDP was not my thing, but when someone said "Jack" we knew who they were talking about, like here in Alberta we had "Ralph" a few years ago, not many politicians are able to relate to the general population like that. RIP, Jack. God be with your family and friends.

One of the few politicians I would have liked to sat down with over a beer and a good meal, and if I were still living in Toronto, I'd have made a trip to Ottawa today. I'm not an NDP'er, but Jack Layton seemed approachable in a way that, frankly, I would never think to ascribe to any other federal politician in recent memory, no matter what their stripes.

This said his political views don't reflect the aspirations of the majority of Canadians, It''s funny the way all,of a sudden when you died all your flaws are forgotten and you seems to have been the best person in the world.

Jack Layton was a good politician, he spoke his mind, he fought for the little guy, represented his riding and his party well. He brought forward many ideas and policies the majority of us would not always agree with. What did he do in his political life that gave him the honour to have a state funeral at the cost of millions of dollars, what did he do that he will be remembered for in our Canadian history. He became the leader of the opposition, he disposed of the Block and Gilles Ducept , what else did he do like Tommy Douglas, he helped to bring in universal health care. Have we lowered the bar for state funerals, to get a state funeral now you no longer have to be a prime minister or a governor general. Will we be seeing a whole lot more state funerals, I would think "yes"

I do admire the way Jack faced cancer to the very end likely very well knowing the jig was up. His appearance a month or so ago and that final letter he drafted, or may not have drafted depending what shape he was in at that time, were courageous gestures. But let's face it jacks policies were a disaster. His party is a disaster and hopefully this will precipitate a permanent dirt nap for the NDP. They are more dangerous than trudeau, the liberals and mcguinty. That's scary.

Very sad to hear of Jack Layton passing. I didn't like his politics and hated the way he would shake your hand and stab you in the back with the other. I will never forgive the politician Jack Layton for the millions of dollars he squandered on his annual travel expenses and forcing a unnecessary election last May. That be said give him a state funeral and then lets carry on.

For those of you who critizied me for saying shame on Harper for not attending Harper's funeral, giving the excuse that he was busy in the North, I heard that on the radio in my area. That was top of mind when I wrote my comment. Friends in other cities tell me they heard the same. I suspect public pressure causes Harper to capitulate. For the record, I have neither voted for Harper nor Layton. I'm not a Harper Hater - I simply call things as I see them.

It's funny how no one has mentioned how Jack Layton himself would probably not agree with the entire state funeral thing. From what I know of Mr Layton I'm sure he would rather have the money that will be spent on this spectacle to go towards helping the flood victims in Quebec, the homeless or the recent victims of the tornado in Goderich. In fact donating to these causes and others that Mr Layton stood for seems like a more fitting tribute. Something to consider.

Tu est et tu restera toujours un bon Jack! It's because of you that I started getting more interested in canadian politics and followed the campaign from start to finish. I even convinced some undecided co-workers of mine to watch the debate and they voted for you! It was sad for me when the Liberals won in my riding, but we still gave them a run for there money and it was a tight race and that proves that change is possible. I will take your advice and try to be more loving, hopeful and optimistic. You may have left this world, but your positive spirit will carry on with us and you will never be forgotten! We love you Jack! Rest in peace Mr. Layton. You are in a better place now.

To Libby lets see no just because he stood by his beliefs will not give me reason to vote for him. I stand by mine most of which conflict with his. There is also the fact that many in his party tried to have the military branded as war criminals, IE Jean Crowder and others sorry but no we are not. The NDP itself has to many wingnuts for my liking as of course all political parties do, as well I am well far from being a socialist. I believe people should work for what they have not have it given to them on a goverment handout. I saw that in BC under the NDP. But when it comes to Mr. Layton I have admitedly called him Taliban Jack, I can at least admire him for sticking to HIS beliefs. They are just not mine.

Jack Layton was a politician who truly cared about Canada, especially our young people. Its extremely disheartening to read some of the comments posted by others, who should know better. Our Prime Minister actually made a decision that reflected the wishes not only himself had, but most importantly the public had for Mr. Layton so let it go, he deserves a state funeral, and if he didnt get one people would complain about that. As a young person, Mr Layton inspired me to take pride in my country, and to get out there and vote! We lost someone who cannot be replaced, but rest assured will be an amazing inspiration to us as we move forward as a country.... Im delighted to tell my children about how Mr. Layton was a ray of sunshine and reached out to us and engaged us, like no other has done....RIP Jack....

@ Bryan,As someone who has kept track of cancer research over the years, I think you should check your facts before you start claiming that Canadian healthcare for cancer is constantly failing. Yes, people often die from cancer, but cancer therapy is working both curatively and palliatively - it has been shown to extend the average survival of cancer patients considerably. Before you let your grief and feeling of hopelessness from Jack's "lost battle" against cancer, remember that he did manage to fight off prostate cancer, and that his health was subject to multiple unfortunate comorbid conditions in recent times. Hope before fear my friend, and do not discourage the numerous cancer survivors out there. We will fight on, and not give up on developing cancer therapy. We have made HUGE advances in the past decade, and will continue doing so. If you're in doubt, check up the numbers, or the stories on cancer forums to be informed.Regards,Lee

Jack Layton achieved a lot with a party that has tons of problems. He deserves the honor of a state funeral. I'm glad that his children and grandchildren are included. His death is a loss to Canada. While no one can fully replace another person, it will be particularly difficult to replace Jack Layton. There's more to this than Jack Layton and his cancer. I'm willing to bet that there are other reasons why we have embraced his saga with cancer. We all know people around us that have had the disease and died from it. Pretend all you want but I'm willing to bet that you know more people who have died with it than have beaten it. Sure there are sporadic stories here and there of miracles but the cards are on the table and many die. Why? Why are the treatments for cancer not working and why are they continually being used over and over with the same results? Wearing a little yellow lillie pin from the Cancer Society isn't curing anything. Year after year more money is given to this disease yet still death upon death. And why haven't we been told what cancer killed Mr. Layton? The media is silent just like they were about the death of Betty Fox a few months ago. Why are Canadians being treated like children who can't know why an icon in Canada is dead from a "mystery" cancer ..but apparently the other one "prostate" was beaten??? Enough of the denial Canada..our health care system is downhill and cancer treatments are questionable and not working...many are dying. Wake up!

It says a lot about a politician that from the right to the left, municipalities to federal level, religious groups to unions, they all talk about Layton's decency, energy, commitment, and passion, and what a loss to Canada is his untimely death. There are few who command such across-the-board respect. Credit definitely goes to PM Harper for breaking with protocol and authorizing a state funeral for the Leader of the Opposition. That is appropriate for any such leader who dies in office. As for the comparison below to Tommy Douglas, it should be noted that as important as he was to Canada, he wasn't Leader of the Opposition. And the then Prime Minister and the then Leader of the Official Opposition both honoured him at his funeral, as did many Canadians at the time and later. Honour and respect aren't "zero sum games": kind words about Jack Layton do not detract from the praise of Tommy Douglas.

Here's a question. What if Jack had won the election, the whole thing? He almost did. What if he overturned the political system, became Prime Minister, with a gang of newbies and place holder candidates, and then died? What condition would Canada be in right now, with a global financial meltdown, several wars and rumours of wars, and a dead Prime Minister with an inept, inexperienced government and the Liberal party decimated? Those running for leadership of parties should be forced to pass a medical examination and have those results published. As it is we now have an inept, inexperienced oppostion, and that is nearly as bad. That is also the danger of a "one man show". Jack Layton was several levels above the rest of his mates, and now it really shows.

I am not a big fan of Mr. Harper but have more respect for him because he did this for Jack! According to CTV Mr. Harper will be at the funeral. I don't think he would miss this. Jack is the reason I got interested in what goes on in our government. He fought for all Canadians no matter who they were. Some leaders lack that quality and hope this is an eye opener for some. I didn't think I would ever shed a tear over the loss of a politician but I am. He was all about diversity and that I thank for his acceptance because I am a Canadian. Unlike some other members of parliment perhaps this can be a lesson for them. Jack showed us respect and got it in return. This is a terrible loss and my heart goes out to his family. hugz xoxo RIP Jack :) Thank you once again from the bottom of my heart. You made a difference!

I didn't agree with everything he said, but then again, I can say the same thing for each of the party leaders. I will say that I admired him for his passion for politics, for the people he did represent, and for Canada. I can't say that about all the others. What I admire most is that he made people think. He kept people on their toes. He questioned what had to be questioned. He tried to better Canada as he saw it. 61 years old... too young. What could he have done had he not had cancer... we'll never know.

It never ceases to amaze me how people get upset at things. The PM didnot have to OFFER a state funeral, but he did. He did this for a man that has dedicated his life to public service for a better way of living, dedicated to his country and family. Jack Layton made history as the head of the NDP party and didnot get a chance to get down to business because cancer claimed his life. If anything we as a country should put our views behind us at this time and do what is right by Jack. Then tomorrow we can go back to the business of pointing fingers and being upset. Today honor a man who had the courage to be a politician to help change our country and the courage to battle cancer, and lost.

@Fred, as a serving officer I am appauled at your comments. The men and women of our Canadian Forces serve so that all may have a voice even those who would criticize our work. You paint Jack Layton as anti-Canadian because he chose to raise questions about the methods we use to do our task but I am thankful that he did. Such questions cause us to take a second look and ensure that we are doing our job to the best of our ability, in the most professional manner possible so as to not bring discredit upon our great country. You should be ashamed of yourself, don't use the hard work of the CF to justify your ignorance. Jack was a proud Canadian, good enough for me. RIP Jack, you have my salute!

It makes me appericate and respect his positive outlook on not only life but politics. I maybe Conservative but i am also a man who appericates those on the left who show class. It pains me that there is divison in our country on funeral today from those who are petty and foolish..... I have no respect for them. Jack Layton freely chose a PUBLIC life in politics. It is, therefore, fair and just that his political career (not his personal life, as a man, husband, and father) remain open for assessment in the wake of his passing. When you're a career politician, you're a career public figure, and your career is NEVER immune from critical analysis. Those of you with your knickers in a twist calling for others to "Show some respect!" clearly aren't hip to the fact, or considering, that Jack Layton himself always encouraged the provision for, and tolerance of, differing and dissenting opinion. He didn't advocate others "shutting up" or being forced to keep their opinions to themselves. Canada will pay due tribute to the parliamentary Leader of the Official Opposition with a state funeral. However, it does NOT mean that citizens must participate in elevating Mr. Layton to political "sainthood" and glorifying his political career, the democratic record of which is never closed to criticism. Frankly, I can't imagine Jack Layton being "offended."

Jack Layton really up held Tommy Douglas's belief's. It sadden's me a great deal to see him gone. He was one of the few politician's that would of brought true democracy to Canadian's. He was too humble to use his politic's for his own advantage. He believed in people of all denomination's. That was Jack's message all the time he was in parliament. Jack may you rest in peace. My condolences to all his family, friends and colleges.

Some of the negativity on here is astounding. Whether agreed with his political views or not, Jack Layton was a man who loved this country. He was also a man who bravely fought a horrific disease for a lot longer than any of us realized. He never used his cancer for his own gains. He fought for his party and he fought for what he believes in. His letter is not some pathetic attempt to bring him infamy. Shame on those of you who are belittling what he went through in his last few months.

I think whether or not a state funeral is fitting for Jack is a rather subjective decision. And while I do agree that the politics should be taken out of the conversation about Jack's passing, it looks to me like it's NDPer who mostly want to carry on with the poitics. PM Harper exercised his discretion as PM,and granted Jack Layton a state funeral. Whether you agree with that, or not, that is a clear break from traditional protocol. As I read the tributes in the last few days,I do see people who opposed the NDP and Jack Layton on political matters pointing out that a state funeral is out of line for Jack. They may or may not be right. But they are right in that traditional protocols have been broken, and they have a right to point that out. Doing it respectfully would be preferable. Obviously Jacks political allies think this state funeral is in order. But what has been missing, and conspicoulsy missing, is any sense of gratutude for this honour. Not one comment of thanks from any NDP MLA in Parliament. Just the same old vitriole from the NDP and most of their supporters. NDPers still carring on their war with those so called "evil neo cons". The Prime Minister honours Jack Layton in a way that breaks all protocols, sets aside all their political differences, and genuinely honours the life work of a politcal foe,and not one word of thanks from the politcal left in this country. Just more hate and vitriole. Over politics. Shame on you lefties for not being able to bury the hatchet for at least one week. Harper did the right thing, and still you hate.

Regardless of whatever else he did I can't forget his ridiculous grandstanding over the Afgan detainee's issue. He was politician, just like any other, and was far from a saint. In my opinion, all political parties have been very respectful towards Jack Layton, and I am touched that Harper has offered a state funeral.

We live in a society where people look up to and pay way too much attention to celebrities (i.e. Amy Winehouse) and quasi-celebrities (i.e. reality TV stars). To me, these people are not real people. It is, therefore, so nice and so heartwarming to see that people are paying attention and respecting a real person, a good, honest man like Jake Layton. He so deserves all the attention and respect. RIP my dear Jack. I miss you. You were the reason I voted -- because of you my city (Repentigny, Quebec) a loyal Bloc Quebecois city in the past, is now orange.

If the Government of Canada is going to break "tradition" and accord figures such as Layton a "state funeral" then they should come up with a way of categorizing it in such a way to still give those who truly qualify for a state funeral their just due. For example they could refer to a state funeral for those meeting the criteria as a "state funeral of the 1st Degree" and those such as Layton receiving it due to popular demand as a "state funeral of the 2nd Degree". This way it would still accord the right to those meeting the standard for it and still giving those by popular demand the pomp but with a category that deems it as such without taking away from those in more important roles. Just an idea worth considering.

Outside of the GTA it would be a stretch to say this man was beloved by all Canadians. I admire him for his service to the country, but he was also well paid for what he did so let's not pretend he was a saint who did what he did out of the goodness of his heart. He was a politician, not a saint and I think people need tot ake deep breath and calm down. I'm pretty sure Tommy Douglas never got a state funeral and he will be remembered long after people have forgotten about Mr Layton.

I am in no means an NDP supporter, but that being said, show your respect people. The state funeral was to the discretion of the PM (I am also NOT a Conservative!) and I think it was the perfect choice for such a man of integrity and tenacity. No one is ever happy with anything. The man has passed away, and he deserves a respectful send off.

To the comments about Mr Jack Layton not deserving a state funeral or whether Mr Harper is there or not is immaterial as far as I'm concerned. Whether some of you had agreed with his party line or not, is beside the point. The fact is that this is a role Jack Layton played as the leader of the opposition (as is Mr Harper who leads the majority). This is a necessary function in our government. He did the job, like it or not. We all have our views and leanings towards different issues. It's time to put away your petty sniveling and griping. Now is the time for all of us to show a little class and demonstrate respect for a fellow Canadian who has served his country.

People comment at what Layton "wanted to get done" but really haven't studied in depth what it was he wanted to "get done". Had Jack Layton achieved through the NDP what he wanted we would have a much different Canada paying much higher taxes for a revised society that doesn't reflect the social or moral fabric of our traditional values and culture. Layton spent his life catering to many special interest groups and drew support from these groups but it was not what was good for Canadian families. A life spent living off taxpayers isn't what many would call a successful career. At some point you have to contribute not just take from the system.

I think people should put the issue of the state funeral to rest. I am not and NDP and have never been. But regardless of our personal political feelings and views Jack Layton deserves a state funeral. In my view it is not Layton himself who deserves one, but it is the Leader of the Official Opposition who died in office who definetely deserves a state funeral. The leader of the Official Opposition while alive is entitled to many perks such as an official residence, office etc. and as such he is also entitled to a state funeral. Whethere you liked the man himself or not it is not the issue, the issue is the institution that he represented.

I'm not of his politics but definitely recognized him as a special person, one who could have led our Parliamentarians on a straighter more truthful path and to be accountable to the electorate.Being given a State Mourning & Funeral is wonderful. We (including his family) will grieve and miss him but then we will celebrate the man as a truly remarkable, authentic individual. Some one else said this but he was the man who could have become the Prime Minister!I honor the man, the person and his accomplishments whilst we had him here.

I agree that Jack Layton was a master manipulator and earned the moniker of "Champagne socialist". He took advantage whenever he could at the taxpayers expense. His open letter is another attempt to bring himself infamy in death and is frankly just over the top with self aggrandizement. Once the tears stop and emotions settle and sober second reflection sets in people will see things for what they really were.

What about those who have done more for this country out of the spotlight then Jack Leighton has done in the spotlight. Death is a part of life, for those who have lost, it's a life changing event, the pomp and circumstance that is surrounding this is outlandish at best. But once again, our Government is doing what they this is right based on public opinion, not what is right in the spending of our tax dollars.

Layton's claim to fame was he single handedly reduced the Liberal party to third party status for the first time since Confederation, and turned their leader into a laughing stock.
