PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The U.S. National Hurricane Center says that Tropical Storm Emily is losing strength.

The centre says in its latest bulletin that the mountains that divide Haiti and the Dominican Republic are breaking up the storm system. A plane is being dispatched to investigate, and the storm could be downgraded later Thursday to a tropical wave.

The Dominican government has discontinued the tropical storm warning for the country's south coast. More than 5,000 people had been moved in that region because of the potential for flooding from heavy rain.
