NEW YORK — Radio talk show host Glenn Beck said on his show that the camp in Norway where a gunman opened fire on young people sounds "like Hitler Youth."

On his radio show Monday, the former Fox News Channel host was discussing last week's attacks where at least 76 people were killed. In an aside, he talked about the Utoya Island camp run by the ruling Labor Party for youngsters interested in politics.

The camp "sounds a little like the Hitler Youth or whatever," Beck said. "Who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing."

The camp was targeted by the gunman, who claimed he was trying to save Europe from what he says is Muslim colonization. The Labor Party has advanced a policy of ethnic tolerance.

Torbjorn Eriksen, a former press secretary to Norway prime minister Jens Stoltenberg, told The Daily Telegraph in England that the comments were a "new low" for Beck.

"Young political activists have gathered at Utoya for over 60 years to learn about and be part of democracy, the very opposite of what the Hitler Youth was about," Eriksen said. "Glenn Beck's comments are ignorant, incorrect and extremely hurtful."

Beck made his comments during a discussion about problems that he predicted Europe would face because of an increased Muslim population. He denounced the gunman, who he said "is just as bad as Osama bin Laden."

The Hitler Youth aimed to instill the Nazis' racist and xenophobic ideals into young Germans, through a mix of indoctrination, outdoor activities and military-style training.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I respect people who try not to divide us and polarize us, but to celebrate the things we have in common. This is another example of someone who seeks to divide us by criticizing and worse, by using painful examples of history to make their point. It's one thing for Mr. Beck to say that he doesn't agree with political camps for teens. It's quite another to use the emotional launchpad of a terrible event to score points.

If I gave a flying f**k what Glen Beck, Nancy Grace or Bozo the clown thought, I'd be on the CNN, FOX or Cartoon Network website. Sure, Beck's entitled to his opinion, and entitled to share it with his followers. Why is the editor of CTV News shovelling his crap in our direction? Is this what you think of your viewers? Give your head a shake. Even Sun TV wouldn't insult us enough to give a rodeo clown like Beck the time of day.

Hey Brent. If you don't like multiculturalism, then you don't belong in Canada. Multiculturalism is the philosophical foundation of this country. As for the article, Glenn Beck is a moron and everything, but I have to say that I agree that these sorts of camps sound bizarre and indefensible. It's one thing to imbue your kids with your values. It's quite another to imbue them with a specific way of looking at the world.

I am disappointed and popping now to a different news source in hopes of something intelligent.

Dave - "If this had happended at a Stephen Harper Conservative camp or some further right wing Alberta Reform styled camp, he would never have voiced such ignorance." Dave - I agree Beck wouldn't have said anything but I can only imagine what your post / everybody else's would be. What if it comes out that this guy had gone to a right wing camp when he was younger? Is everybody still supportive of political camps?

Socialism, and communism, and fascism are left wing ideologies because they all stand for large governments with few liberties for the populace. Anarchism is a right wing philosophy because it stands for no government. Again, Far left = tyranny and Far Right = liberty. People like Glenn Beck are middle right. The Labour Party Camp does have a lot in common with the Hitler Youth.

I was a member of the Western Tories. We had meetings and a conference for two days every year. The most fun was when we had events with Liberals or NDP to debate / discuss issues. As a Conservative there is NO CHANCE i would send my kid to a "conservative camp". Kids don't need to be segregated based on political parties.... Left or right wing parents send their kids at young ages to these camps in Norway so they get brainwashed into thinking a certain way. If a kid wants to get involved in poltics let them but no way I beleive that 10 year olds on their own are asking to go to "politics" camps.

@pjr Italian Fascism grew out of the socialist movement. In the case of the NAZIs, remember that it is a short form for National Socialism. The NAZI party was ultimately pan-spectral politically, drawing on both leftist and rightist policies. There were many socialist elements to the NAZI movement.

Prof. Pye Chart - equating these massacred kids with the Hitler Youth is unacceptable. As a Beck apologist, you just relegated yourself to the same moral trash heap as Beck himself. Isn't it funny that people like you think teenagers are too young to be exposed to political philosophy but have no problem with them attending religious indoctrination camps. I attended such "Jesus" camps in the 70's I know exactly what goes on in those not-so-innocent camps. I wish I had instead done something useful with that time but at least I survived without being assimilated.

Who cares what Glen says really…. what I find funny is how CTV which is more to the left when it comes to politics then other news media outlets had to mention Fox News in this story. Wasn’t he on CNN a lot longer then Fox? But I guess CNN which also is more left-wing shares CTV media’s news agenda.

The Labour Party camp didn't preach hate. It did however preach left wing ideology. Nazism is a left wing ideology. It was called the National Socialist German Workers Party. Socialism is left wing... not that far of a stretch on Glenn Beck's part.

It is persons like Beck, who in the name of "Free Speech", incite hatred. This hatred is aimed not at a specific target, but at anyone who holds ideas - political or religious - different to their own. In the case of the USA, it is the extremes of the Democratic and Republican parties that do the worst damage. Their actions, in this way, are no different to the actions of those fringe groups that go further and plant bombs or commit mass murder. In some ways they are worse: instead of killing a few hundred, their intent is to poison the minds of millions. Their actions are more comparable to the Hitler Youth and similar groups than the Labor Party of Norway. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

What's up with these weirdos on the right equating left-leaning political ideology with facism? We saw it with the Obama/Hitler posters during the health care reform in the US and now this. Facism is actually an extreme form of right wing ideology. Once again this guy has proven he has little intelligence and even less class!

People. People. People. We're talking about indoctrination here. Very few "youth" have the intellectual fortitude to freely decide that they want to go to, for example, a conservative, liberal, or socialist camp because they maturely identify with the encompassing political ideology. Knowledge, experience, and wisdom should, ideally, shape one's political views (not the partisan affiliation of your parents, etc.). It's NOT like soccer camp. When I was a teenager, a friend belonged to Young Liberals of Canada, and I attended some events. There was no legitimate educational comparative context; therefore, you swallowed the biased rhetoric that you were spoon-fed and trusted that "they" knew what was "right" and "best." Nonsense. (Although, of course, you went along with it all.) Glenn Beck is merely guilty of being a good political entertainer who made a crass reference in fingering the truth. Take a pill.

Multiculturalism IS a huge problem in the West (Europe, North America, Australia, etc.) and must be stopped. However, using the means this fellow did is wrong. It must be done through legislation and enforcement by the police.

Apparently Glenn Beck was robbed of a great experience when he was younger and that is to attend a weekend retreat for a political party. I certainly enjoyed the experience many years ago at a Conservative retreat and that is where I first met John Diefenbaker. This type of thing goes on regularly witn any political party. However we seem to be at an age where we have wreckless broadcasters willing to say anything outrageous just to keep their names out there.

I don't give this buffoon an ounce of credibility at the best of times but this shameful comment is simply an inhuman disregard for the pain of the families and the nation. His prominence in the media is due to his support from the radical right. It's extremist rhetoric like this that helped spawn the terror and murder in Norway. Beck and his following truly disgust me.

A lot of the conflict in the West has to do with the suppression of free speech. Don Cherry had it right when he said that taking away fighting in hockey would result in more stick swinging incidents. The morons on here who want to suppress Glenn's speech don't know what they are talking about. I agree with the way in which Geert Wilders beat the phony hate speech charges in the Netherlands. The ball was on a roll and I think we can get it rolling again even after the staged event in Norway.

Politics is the one field in which you can get work, with NO particular education or credentials. If we can have soccer camps why not give education in something that DOES matter? Seems that Beck prefers his politicians untrained and ignorant. Sort of like talk show hosts....

Unfortunately Beck is right. Not only are the Left-Wing indoctrinating kids at alarming rates, but this camp is a prime example. Comments by ultra left wing on here comparing a christian bible camp to a political camp are ludicrous, and prime example of the hate and fear that the left propagates. Don't worry lefties, Norway will ensure that this crazy murderer responsible for this unbelievable act has a nice long term in a resort style prison. He'll live better than most Canadians thanks to Norways extreme left social prison system, focused on re-habilitation and relaxation. It's a funny comaprison how the left wingers on here hate Beck so much, especially with his support of Israel. Truth sure comes out fast with the left speaking before they think! Who really is preaching the hate now?

I agree with Beck on this one and hopefully my Christlike method of winning them over will get back on a roll after that other Nazi - Anders Behring Breivik, stopped the ball that was already rolling in Europe. To put Geert Wilders on trial for telling nothing but the truth was a Nazi move that some Norwegians agreed with.

It is very typical for a person with extreme right-wing=conservative views. They may behave like normal people, but at some point they loose it badly. Just another reason why extremist views of all kinds, right or left, should be outlawed. Freedom of speach doesn't mean a human should act - or speak - like an animal (and yes, my apologies to animals!).

I am surprised that many commenters aren't aware of the fact that every Political Party has similar programs for their youth. Young Conservatives of Canada, Young Liberals of Canada, New Democratic Youth of Canada are all here. Young people voluntarily go these meetings/camps to learn more about Politics from their slant.

James, Beck was not making a harmless observation separate from the tragedy. You don't pull out the name "Hitler" unless you want to attribute evil characteristics to something. The fact is, Beck knows that the labour party in question supports multi-culturalism and other liberal and socialist ideals that he does not. You could call it indoctrination, others would call it affirmative action. If this had happended at a Stephen Harper Conservative camp or some further right wing Alberta Reform styled camp, he would never have voiced such ignorance.

Actually, I was wondering what a camp for Labour party kids was all about. Political indoctrination? Can you imagine the media outcry if the Stephen Harper conservatives had a similar camp here in Canada. Becks query is not odd. He is not saying they deserve what happened. It is separate from the tragedy.
