Layton stepping aside as he battles new cancer
CTV News.ca Staff
Date: Mon. Jul. 25 2011 10:12 PM ET
A frail-looking Jack Layton has announced he is taking a leave of absence from his party's leadership to fight a "new form of cancer" that requires immediate treatment.
The NDP leader, stunning many in the room with his gaunt appearance and hoarse voice, made the announcement at a hotel in Toronto with his wife Olivia Chow at his side.
He explained that while his battle with prostate cancer has been going "very well," he began experiencing pain in the closing days of the last parliamentary session. Medical tests revealed a second form of cancer.
He did not specify what form of the disease he was now battling but said he received the final test results only last week.
"So, on the advice of my doctors, I am going to focus on treatment and recovery," he said in a raspy voice.
"...I'm going to fight this cancer now, so I can be back to fight for families when Parliament resumes."
Layton appeared to have lost a good deal of weight since June 28, where journalists at a garden party at his official residence, Stornoway, noticed he seemed to be ill and spent most the evening sitting down.
His last public appearance was at Toronto's Gay Pride parade on July 3, but he sat in a rickshaw for the event, instead of walking along the crowd as he usually does.
Layton insisted he was "hopeful and optimistic about the personal battle that lies before me in the weeks to come."
He said he has requested that NDP President Brian Topp convene a meeting of the party's federal council to appoint an interim leader. Layton said he will recommend Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel, national chairperson of the NDP caucus, for the job.
"She's an experienced national leader in both official languages and she will do an excellent job as our national leader interim leader," he said.
Layton said he intends to resume his duties as NDP leader when Parliament meets on Sept. 19.
Topp says he "wouldn't bet against Jack Layton."
Layton has decided not to disclose the specifics of his disease, unlike when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
"I think he told us what we need to know," Topp told CTV News Channel. "He is aware of the influence that an important national figure has to people when he talks about his health."
Layton's announcement was met with well-wishes from his opponents in Ottawa.
"I salute the courage (Jack Layton) continues to show in his fight against cancer. I wish Jack a successful recovery," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on his Twitter account.
Liberal interim leader Bob Rae said he was "deeply saddened by the news.
"All we can say is we wish him the very best for his recovery and I guess on a personal level I think he is making the right decision to take a complete break from politics," he told CTV News Channel. "Obviously, this has got to be is focus."
Green Leader Elizabeth May said on Twitter that she was "praying for (Layton's) full recovery. As are all Canadians."
Many in the Canadian public have also taken to Twitter to offer their best wishes and support to the ailing NDP leader. "Jack Layton" became a trending topic in Canada Monday afternoon.
"Your support and well wishes are so appreciated. Thank you. I will fight this – and beat it," Layton responded on his Twitter account.
Canadians wanting to message Layton can also send their well wishes at a website set up by the NDP.
Layton has battled health problems for close to two years. He was diagnosed in February, 2010, with prostate cancer and then incurred a broken hip in the spring, just before the start of the federal election campaign.
But he kept up a rigorous schedule on the election trail. His party went on to win more seats than it ever had in its history, buoyed in good measure by Layton's personal popularity.
The party gained Official Opposition status for the first time in its history, almost single-handedly decimating the Bloc Quebecois in Quebec.

Last week, I watched a report on Mr. Layton's experience at Saint-Joseph's Hospital, in Hamilton, and found the report to be both educational and inspiring. His attitude was fantastic and I am sure that everyone with whom he came into contact already felt better for having had an opportunity to shake his hand and see him smile.
He has one of the best smiles of all politicians. Let's hope that he soon feels strong enough again to continue smiling.
Thoughts and prayers, obviously.

I'm sadden to see a person who believes in his ideas of how Canada should move forward, some are good ideas that I hope our government will think about. As a person that has lost my wife plus a few relatives and friends to cancer, I wish you well in your battle with cancer as it will and is the biggest battle in your life.
All the best to you for a good recovery and hope your family is at your side, as I know they will, to give you, as I think many people in Canada will.
Good luck, God Bless and hope to see you back.

Politics aside, you are a TRUE asset to this country and I hope you make a full recovery.
I still remember your line a few elections ago when you grilled Mr. Harper about his lack of a platform, and you said: "Where is your platform Mr. Harper, under your sweater?"
Even though I'm a conservative, that line made me laugh.
I will pray for you Mr. Layton. You are a very good person.

I may not agree with Jack's party in politics, but I have always been a Jack Layton supporter personally. Just wished he had switched his political leaning to follow his Dad many years ago.
