SASKATOON — It's a gruesome tale with a happy ending of sorts.

Seven dogs who ate the remains of their dead owners in a home in Saskatchewan have all been adopted.

The Saskatoon SPCA says the dogs had behavioural and health assessments and should thrive in their new homes.

The assessments found the dogs were non-aggressive, in great shape and had great dispositions.

The trainer who assessed them says the dogs only did what they had to do to survive.

The animals belonged to a couple who lived in a rural home in eastern Saskatchewan.

When the wife died after an illness, her husband killed himself, leaving the dogs behind to fend for themselves.

RCMP made the grisly find when they went to the home in early July after concerns were raised about the couple not being seen for three weeks.

Five of the dogs are shelties and two are mixed breeds.
