Prince William says he and his wife, Kate, are "delighted" to be in Canada and excited to start their nine-day tour of the country.

"We've been looking forward to this moment for a very long time and before we were married we had a longing to come here together," William said in a short address at Rideau Hall in front of thousands of onlookers, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov. Gen David Johnston.

"The geography of Canada is unsurpassed and famous for only being matched by the hospitality of its peoples."

Prince William started his speech in French, later joking that his French would improve.

Canada's official welcome for the couple included a 21-gun salute, the playing of the Canadian anthem and speeches from Johnston and Harper.

"Let me begin with heartfelt congratulations on your recent marriage," Harper said. "For Canadians your marriage heralds a rich future for the long and deep relationship we share with the Crown."

Harper said he regretted he could not attend their wedding due to the timing of the federal election campaign, but said he and his wife watched the wedding from a hotel room in Montreal on the election trail.

"Welcome to Canada, the honeymoon capital of the Commonwealth," Johnston said in his greeting.

And if the royal couple was delighted to be in Canada, many Canadians were even more delighted to have them, as the couple was greeted by screams and cheers normally left to pop singers like Justin Bieber.

The newlyweds' first official stop Thursday was at the National War Memorial for a wreath-laying, book-signing and walkabout, where they were joined by Harper and his wife Laureen.

After a solemn ceremony, the royal couple spoke to veterans who had gathered there. They then moved on to where the crowd had gathered behind security gates to shake hands and meet ordinary Canadians who had come to greet them. Some in the crowd gave gifts to the royal couple.

Thousands of adoring onlookers lined up along the memorial square. The crowd went for blocks down to adjacent Elgin Street, past the National Arts Centre.

By the time the couple were done greeting those in the crowd, they were 10 minutes late for their next appearance.

The royal couple then went to Rideau Hall where they were greeted by Johnston and another large crowd of onlookers, numbering in the thousands. Once again the couple took the time to shake hands and greet their admirers.

Later on Thursday evening, the royal couple attended an event to celebrate young Canadians that had to be delayed and moved into the Tent Room at the Governor General's residence due to rain.

About 100 young Canadians were selected to attend to honour their community service. Three young women and two men ranging in age from 17 to 31 were selected to form the receiving line to greet the royal couple, the Harpers, Johnston and his wife, Sharon.

Each took time to speak one-by-one with the greeters and an aide, 18-year-old Taylor Quinn from B.C., told them when it was time to move on.

Kate, wearing a black and white dress and black espadrilles, and the prime minister were then escorted to a round table where they chatted with a small group and William and the Governor General were escorted to a different table to mingle.

The menu for the casual reception featured ingredients harvested from all corners of Canada and was prepared by a team of chefs.

The couple arrived in Ottawa just after 2 p.m. local time on a Canadian Forces plane in bright sunshine, warm temperatures and a slight breeze and were greeted on the tarmac by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, other dignitaries and Mounties in their traditional red serge uniforms.

William was dressed in a blue suit and red tie, while Kate wore a knee-length print dress with nude stilettoes and a matching handbag and her flowing, brown hair pinned back.

The Cecile dress is from Canadian fashion designer Erdem Moralioglu's pre-spring 2012 collection. Montreal-born Moralioglu, who is based out of London, U.K., earned his fashion degree at Ryerson University in Toronto and was born in Montreal.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson was among those who met the royal couple on the tarmac.

"It was very, very exciting," he told CTV News Channel. "They're a very gracious couple."

He said he thanked Prince William for choosing Ottawa for his first official visit, and noted the intense international media spotlight that he and his wife have turned onto the city.

"It's a very honoured experience but also humbling. They're a wonderful young couple."

Royal watchers from around the country arrived bright and early Thursday morning in Ottawa to stake their claims to viewing spots near the War Memorial and at Rideau Hall.

Many in the crowd are there to see Catherine Middleton, and in particular, see what she is wearing.

The Duchess of Cambridge was spotted wearing a navy blazer from the Canadian label Smythe as she and William boarded the plane Thursday in London.

The royal visit is the couple's first official overseas trip since their wedding in April. Like their nuptials, the tour has drawn the relentless attention of the international media.

More than 1,300 journalists have been accredited to cover the royal tour, including more than 200 from countries other than Canada -- far more than the 20 foreign journalists who came along for the Queen's visit to Canada last summer.

William and Kate's visit will also coincide with Parliament Hill's Canada Day celebrations on Friday, a time when hotel space in Ottawa is already at a premium.

The royal couple's presence is expected to draw even larger-than-usual crowds to the annual celebration.

Organizers hurriedly rushed around Ottawa on Thursday morning in preparation for the big welcome.

At Rideau Hall, gardeners were busy beautifying the grounds, while chefs sliced and diced mountains of vegetables and prepared heaps of pastries for the reception.

Leading the merriment is Gov. Gen. David Johnston, who met the royal newlyweds after their wedding in April.

Johnston told CTV's Canada AM that he's still impressed by couple's good nature and believes Canadians appreciate "their naturalness, their warmth, their sense of presence in the most attractive way."

He added that the visit will go down in history books as an important symbol of the constitutional monarchy.

Though the royal tour has involved massive preparations, Johnston says the down-to-earth couple hasn't made any extravagant demands.

"The needs of this young couple are very simple," he said, adding that the couple's only desire is to see Canada.

Ottawa preps for international exposure

Meanwhile, on Parliament Hill, Canada is getting ready to be seen.

Workers have been readying the Canada Day stage for Friday's celebrations, erecting fences around the stage's perimeter. TV hosts also milled about the area, rehearsing for the festivities which are expected to draw hordes of people to the nation's capital.

Marie Lemay, CEO of the National Capital Commission, said the nation's capital is ready for the crowds, and more importantly, ready for their close up.

"We're looking forward to welcoming the Duke and Duchess on behalf of all Canadians," Lemay told CTV's Canada AM.

"We're trying to put on the best show possible in an opportunity to showcase our country to the entire world."

While most Canadians will be resigned to watching the royal visit on television, a batch of lucky young Canadians has been selected to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at a barbeque event on Thursday.

Young entrepreneur Matthew Hudson is one of 100 Canadian youth handpicked for a chance to rub elbows with William and Kate.

Hudson, who runs a company that uses artificial intelligence to make solar power more efficient, was given the opportunity by the Canadian Youth Business Foundation.

Though selected for being a young business luminary, the prospect of meeting the Duchess of Cambridge leaves Hudson tongue-tied.

"I'm married so I can't lose it too much," he told CTV's Canada AM. "I think I'll have to control myself."

Tour seen as Middleton's Canadian debut

Royal tours are often seen as an opportunity to showcase Canada world stage. But as royal biographer Andrew Morton points out it will be William and Kate — not Canada — under the most scrutiny.

In June 1983, Canadians were whipped into a frenzy when Prince Charles and Princess Diana arrived for their first visit to Canada.

Journalists criticized the young Diana for not speaking publically during that tour. Similarly, Middleton does not have any scheduled speeches during the royal visit.

Morton said he expects that the newly dubbed Duchess of Cambridge, will receive just as much attention as Diana did almost 30 years ago.

"Royal men are judged by what they say, royal women are judged by what they look like," Morton told CTV's Canada AM.

International media is expected to follow the royals around for most of the nine-day tour, which features at least one stop in every region of the country.

On Friday, the royal couple will attend Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill. Homegrown musical talent like Newfoundland band Great Big Sea and Quebec's Sam Roberts Band will be on display.

After Ottawa, William and Kate will head to Quebec, where a separatist group called the Quebec Resistance Network is planning a protest against the monarchy.

The royal couple then plans to head east to Charlottetown. Twenty-four hours later they'll be in the Northwest Territories before finishing the tail end of their Canadian tour in Calgary.

In a Harris-Decima poll conducted for The Canadian Press, 77 per cent of respondents said they were aware that William and Kate were visiting Canada. A similar survey the previous year found only 55 per cent of respondents aware of the Queen's impending visit.

I think it is fantastic that they are here, they are a very down to earth and modern young couple. They are so refreshing from the other royals, it is a pleasure to see them mingling with the crowd. Too bad his Mom can't see what a nice young man he has become.

Why not we say welcome and pride for them to visit Canada. Frankly, support or not they are the Head of the state. So say WELCOME THEM TO CANADA.By the way, William's FRENCH is way better than PM and GG.

The Royal Couple would show great courage and respect for life if they avoid the Stampede. Six animals died in 2010 alone. Most of these animals suffer painful bone fractures or heart attacks before they are finally euthanized. This is not something that we as Canadians should consider amusement or entertainment. I hope the Royals respect their own laws and avoid the rodeo on their trip.

I happy to see the Newlyweds here in Canada, it's a postive piece of news. My Grandparents were all from the UK, so I like the fairytale of the Royalty. It's nice to see Kate and William are trying to live normal and give back with their charites. They may be born with gold spoons in their mouths, but are doing the rights things with their status. We should all remember what a wonderful woman Princess Diana was!

Monarchy is a useless relic of the past. It has no place in a modern democracy. These two are just people with inherited titles. There is absolutely nothing special about them. It is a total waste of time and money.

Canada was built people from all over the world who came here for very specific reasons. When our ancestors made the often perilous voyage to Canada, they came knowing full well it was a secular Christian country and a Dominion of The British Empire. That knowledge didn't stop them from coming in the millions. In fact, it's the reason they came. In this day and age, when people still chose to come here but overwhelmingly to take advantage of our liberal, secular society with generous social programs. Canada is the nation it is because of our history, our traditions and our Royals. Those who seek to change our future and to rewrite our past are the greatest evil confronting our society today. Canada is what it is and if you don't like it, then move on. We were founded as a Constitutional Monarchy and we'll remain so forever.

Why is anyone making this about politics ... Almost all royals in the last 100 years have made Canada their first visit after getting married ... this has nothing to do with Harper or anyone in government. It's a statement on where Canada fits in the "Commonwealth". No matter who the leader was, these two would have made Canada their first official visit.

As for the cost ... the tourist dollars being spent will more than offset the cost of their stay and the "spiffying up" the cities associated will do. This is money in the bank ... More people than ever in Ottawa for Canada Day, and I expect the Stampede Parade to be ridiculously crowded too. All of those people will be spending money on hotels, food, crappy tee shirts.

The royal family is an utter disgrace to democracy.

We don't need to be paying for their visit and it's in our best interest to rid ourselves of this relationship with the U.K. but keep them as trading partners and maintain a close relationship with their military.

Time for Canada to grow up and become a proper country by becoming a Republic.

I have always gone to see the Queen when she has visited Manitoba. My father taught me the importance of symbolism and respect. The way he looked at it was England and the many other countries in the Commonwealth would be there for us in a time of crisis as we were for them. My ancestors were invited here in 1874 by the government of Canada and chose this country above all others because it had the duality of democracy and the monarchy. England was much respected by my cultural faith group as a nation with leaders that protected religious minorities. The combination of the constitutional monarchy has aided us thus far in remaining fairly peaceful and protected. I don't worship the Queen or her descendants but I do carry a respect for the way they have allowed democracy to grow without the fear of dictatorship becoming a reality. I am hopeful that when our Queen dies we will say with pride - God save the King and it will be King William. May he and his wife have a joyous, faithful and happy marriage blessed with children. Long live Canada, long live the Queen.

No one said life was easy. But I think it's nice to see the Royal couple happy, to see them take an interest in Canada, a country full of ungrateful people !! I admit it would be nice to be showered with gifts or a vacation someday, but I will continue to work for it like so many others. You complain about your tax dollars being spent in the wrong place.....well open your eyes people, it's being spent in far worse ways than this, like welfare for "certain people that don't want to work", (not all people) So how 'bout complaining about that instead ?? or are you ok with supporting bad habits and just not ok with a 9 day trip. Pathetic !!!

I'm really getting sick of hearing about how much it costs for the Royal Visit, since it's not their responsibility to make money while visiting! The Yanks down in Lala Land have sold $4.2 million dollars worth of tickets just to watch Prince William play a polo match! That's twice what it's costing us for their 9-day visit! (excluding security). They're our young Royals and I'm honoured (with a "u") to have them visit! The rest of you can move south and pay some lippity yank all your money if you do choose to see them!

Seems to me Americans feel like God will just go along with whatever they decide to do, and they hope for permission after the fact, but it doesn't really matter to them. On the other hand "God SAVE the Queen" intimates God is a greater power, which of course He is. Sorry Obama.

Monarchy is outdated, but any working Royal is ok as we no longer live Middle Ages. Diana should be proud of her son! The picture of 'aged' Diana with Kate Middleton plastered on the front page of a magazine was tasteless endeavour. I hope the Queen does the right thing and chooses her replacement to be her grandson. Please leave 'the following the royal protoco'l a thing of the past. Just diplomatic welcome is enough and small entourage. I think Royals have to change like any of us and become serious working individuals instead of just figureheads walzing around based on 'their relatives past accomplishments'. Welcome to the newlyweds, and please participate. Show good example. Past Roayls such as King Edward, who got his own citizens killed with his loose tongue during WWII, show how some of these Roayls used to think. Errare est humanum.

I'm happy they are visiting. I wish I could have the chance to meet them.

And to all you people complaining about how much this will cost. Either way, your spending the same on tax dollars, and if not this, then the country would be spending on the whole debate for that stupid Canada Post legislation or better yet hockey riots in Montreal and Vancouver.

My point is, either way, the money will be spent and 99% of you will not be happy with how the money is being spent.

At least my tax dollars will pay for many Canadians to see a true iconic couple instead of a bunch of cry babies hosting up signs about why they want more of our tax dollars in their pockets.

Why do they get so much attention? Is it really necessary? Does the Monarch have any actual power? Honestly, what does the Queen, or the new royal couple, do in a day? I think people need to wake up and realize the Monarch is a useless piece of our history, and money for events such as the royal couple's visit would be better spent elsewhere.

It's what it is.....You have a comment that makes sense, but why must you always bring "Conservative opinions" into it??? I'm sure that the opinions shown in these comments(negative or positive) are reflective of comments from people of all parties, but you seem to have a "Conservative" hang up. I agree that those so against the Monarchy, and the visit of William and Kate , although entitled to their opinion, should just turn off the TV and don't read the newspaper or news on their computers, while the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are here. Have a rest, all you whiners and complainers, and find yourselves something else to do for a few days. I wish them well, and hope that they enjoy their visit. The economic spin-off should be enormous due to the fact that there will be lots of media and visitors to Canada during their time here. This is not about politics, but is a time for people from all political stripes to come together, and celebrate. After all Canada's birthday is tomorrow, and it will be enhanced by having William and Kate join in at the ceremonies. HAPPY CANADA DAY.

Sure up to 500K people are expected who will spend a lot of money. But when cops are paid $40 an hour and $60 in overtime the costs exceed the benefits to the economy. It's a hell of an expensive party on the backs of the less fortunate. Time to cut more positions in the public service and roll back wages obtained through collective bargaining. At least the fireworks let you forget how the Conservatives are shafting the average Canadian.

Best wishes for the tour! The monarchy is an asset to Canada - helps stabilize our politics and defines us from our republican neighbour. Many of the top-ranking countries on the US Human Development Index and most progressive socially have constitutional monarchies like ours - Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Holland, etc. Having a constitutional monarchy doesn't detract from progressive social policies, but can contribute to them.

I think all these pessimists are not getting the big picture. The eyes of the world will not only be on the Duke and Duchess but on us Canadians as well. In the aftermath of the world viewed Vancouver riots, this is a blessing that we can show once again our welcoming and warms Canadian "glowing hearts"on the international front. Yes, we face hard times, but it's moments such as these, that spruce our economy. The tourism industry is booming in Ottawa and all the stops they'll make. Local retailers are finding opportunities to market themselves in the most incredible ways. And those taxes people are complaining about, are paying moms and dads who work in security, logistics, production, , maintenance, insurance, paramedics, transportation and so much more. I would rather see my tax payers money spent on salaries that feed Canadian families who can then spend on Canadian goods and services than on projects that are useless and never come to fruition. So before you complain, take a step back and see the big picture.. God bless our future King and Queen! Welcome to Canada.

God help us all if we ever end up with what the whiners screech about as a government. DEMOCRACY? Give me a break. There is no democracy in this world that even comes close to what we have in the form of a "Constitutional Monarchy." US? Russia? Iran? Saudi Arabia? Egypt? Libya? Mexico? Argentina? North Korea? China perhaps? Take your pick.
At least here, the people choose their government and leaders. In that respect alone we are all equal. Equality in any other definition is a myth. Each vote is weighted equally (and don't get on the "proportioanl representation" bandwagon; what a shambles that would be - look at the disfunctional parliament we have just thankfully got rid of). Here we have the opportunity to appreciate our heritage; to welcome a couple of representatives of that system, one that has evolved from the Magna Carta to what we have now. A system that is envied by millions and millions world-wide. If you don't like it don't watch it. You couold always go live in one of the aforementioned countries and satisfy your whingeing.

I heard somewhere that upwards of 500,000 people will turn out in Ottawa to get a glimpse of Will and Kate. Weather or not you like the royal family, you have to agree that these hal million will need to eat, sleep and spend money in and arround Ottawa for at least one day. That's a huge boost to the local economy and in my opinion, worth spending a little cash to entertain them in style during their visit.

The young couple seems to be nice and "down to earth" but for me like many other Canadians without any British attachment they are foreign visitors. I know every stamp reminds me that the Queen is our Head of State but many Canadians do not really feel like it. Most other countries have moved on without denying or dishonouring their royal history. And why does being part of the Commenwealth imply that we are subjects to a British monarch. People who still enjoy the glamour and so-called fairy tales could continue to spend their money and time indulging into that royal fuzz by buying the magazines, merchandise or watching weddings etc. But because we still have a monarchy here we all have to pay with their taxes for that extravaganza and endure endless coverage of the visit in our news.

I have no problem with William and Kate coming here, I am more than glad to pay for their visit, this gives our country great international press coverage and will attract many more visitors to this country which will most certainly help our tourism. However as Canada changes and the nation passes through to the next generations the Monarchy will most likely will move from a Constitutional Monarchy to possibly a republic. Us who have served in the military do have a special connection with Canada's Queen. If the Monarchy wants to continue to be a part of Canada's future, then the foundation will need to be laid with this visit by the future King.

If the royals are crooks, back it up with fact. If ALL canadians are against the monarchy, back it up with fact. As for calling those who appreciate our monarchy as being empty headed - wow, now that's real mature, but not entirely unexpected given it's source, but hey, once again it got the all important moniker in print which seems to be the self-serving goal, day after day, after day, after day...

To all the naysayers I say to you: with great privilege comes great responsibility. Yes they may be wealthy and supported up by the people, but that also puts them into an incredible position to give back to the people. Many of the royals are well known for their strong support of charity work and other social activism. Look at the four themes that are being emphasized on this trip: they all support and coincide with Canadian values, and that is the point. They are not here to lord their power over us, they have no real power, but they are here to lend support and awareness to important themes that we as Canadians face every day and are going to continue to face in the coming months. Our young people need to be given the opportunity to show their great potential and capability as our population starts to age, our troops are coming home and we need to support and value their contributions and sacrifices, conservation of Canada and all that it has to offer to future generations and art, culture and sport and good living through the home. Like many other "celebrities" they have the opportunity to bring to light important issues and give importance to them by showing their support. This is win-win for everyone.

Those of you who disagree with royalty and want equality for all people can take comfort in the fact that someday we'll all be equal. Rest assured equality is undeniable. It doesn't matter how much money, fame, or political influence you have. It doesn't matter how religious, noble, educated, cultured, humble, family-oriented, selfish, or pretentious you are. It doesn't matter if you're delusional, intelligent, or if how much your ego is flattered. In due time each and every one of us will suffer the same inevitable fate and end up dead. No amount of hope, prayer, or medical science can protect any of us nor prevent the outcome of our reality. Eventually, when our species goes extinct and our galaxy collapses on itself, nothing that ever happened in human history will have any relevance whatsoever because all of our accomplishments and the very knowledge of our existence will cease to have any influence. Accept the world around you, appreciate what you have, enjoy life to the best of your abilities, and stop trying to change the trivial things which make up and define your experience as beings which exist among other things. Be grateful. I write this not as a nihilist or a preacher, but as a philosopher and a realist - as an individual who understands what and where we are, and doesn't feel the need to deny the truth as so many of you constantly do while going about your petty routines as you think only of yourselves. God exists in the knowledge and understanding of self, not on a cross, star, or some royal crest. Be responsible and honest if only for a nanosecond and stop distracting yourselves with misplaced faith and that which lacks importance. Absorb the love of existence and shed not tears in vain.

I love Canada and its diverse cultures and its diverse opinions. This is about optics folks, plain and simple. We have people in this country who are destitute, suffering because lack of jobs, health care, etc. When you have a group of people as wealthy as the royal family it is a pretty hard pill to swallow when the federal government is cutting programs and jobs to save money. All I ask is that the monarchy cover some of the costs associated with their trip and not expect a free ride for everything. I am of British ancestry, served in our military, and I am proud of Canadian and I beleive there is a place in Canada for the monarchy but it is time to start practicing a little more austerity rather than taking everything for granted. The Queen learned this the hard way when she expected the British government to cover the complete restoration of here palace after the fire so many years ago. I am hoping Will and Kate being as progressive as they are will realize that most people want to see them carry some of the costs they incur.

Second, HRH Prince William and the Duchess will eventually be our King and Queen, so show some respect. Third, they are one of THE most popular young couples in the world today... 13000 reporters to cover their visit... does that not tell you something about their popularity, and the potential tourisim boost to this country, that this visit will generate?? You don't have 13000 reporters covering the Habs that's for sure! Wake up and see this for what it is, a fantastic opportunity to drastically improve it's image as a tourist destination and a boost for all sectors of the economy that is associated with tourisim.Fourth, I will send my personal loyal greetings to the Royal Couple here, and say that I hope that they have a wonderful, pleasant, SAFE, and worry free trip in our wonderful country. As usual, any mention of royalty brings out the anti-monarchists in droves. We are fortunate in the way our system works. We have as head of state a monarch (and her deputies in the form of the Governor General and the Lieutenants General) that were rendered toothless in terms of power centuries ago. They might cost a little in upkeep, but cannot actually do anything other than authorize a law passed by elected MP's (and, hopefully, senators) or MLA's. However, they can question such laws and delay signature until satisfied; but must, ultimately do the bidding of The People. The alternative is an elected president with all sorts of powers, including (in the case of the USA and other nations) the power to VETO what the majority of elected representatives have decided, just to get his own way. We have a choice: a rather antiquated monarchic system with a Queen or King we can trot out for ceremonial occasions - or a president who could turn out like some of the recent US presidents. I know what I prefer: welcome to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, our next-but-one head of state!

I agree with the supporters here. The monarchy IS part of Canadian history, and I think if you knew anything about it you would also see that just like the rest of the world, the monarchy has had to undergo a shift in finding it's place and presence in the current financial and political world. No one is saying these people are better than all you people who take offense to them, they are who they are. They do represent however the change and modernity that the monarchy has adopted, and considering the history of the British Empire, that's pretty huge. Also, even besides the fact that they are part of Canadian history and political system, what is wrong with wanting to show off Canada to some high profile people? All you complainers out there protest to paying some money (a lot of which would have been spent anyways such as for Canada Day and the Stampede) to show off our country seem to think this is wrong. When you have important people of your family and friends over, do you not want to show them a good time and treat them with respect and courtesy? So why not these people? The economic benefits far out-weigh your petty comments and whining about not getting vacations paid for.

Our official country title is Dominion of Canada, which means, for those who don't know, we are a Constitutional Monarchy. We are a member of the British Commonwealth and thus, they are OUR Royal Family. For those who disagree, that's unfortunate, but despite your objections to the fact, it is indeed a FACT.I am very proud to have the Duke and Duchess visit Canada for their first official visit to another country. HRH Prince William will one day be in that position. It is so easy to complain and de-value the royal visits rather than think about what it actually means, and what is entailed if we became a republic. You want to talk "cost"? Billions to be a republic, and to be like the USA? boy not in my lifetime!! This is part of Canadian history, our past is part of who we are. Money is always set aside for foreign visits, and 1.5 mil is a drop in the bucket for the advertising that Canada is getting. If you don't like it fine, don't watch. But you have no right to call out the rest of us who are thrilled with, fascinated with, and love the royal family even with some of the warts all families have. For those of you opposed to the monarchy, don't pledge allegiance. For those opposed to the news coverage, don't read it, don't watch it. For those opposed to the visit altogether, call your MP and whine to them, although you can bet your bottom dollar that regardless of who you voted for (except the silly BQ of course) your party would be hosting this visit with the same honour and grandeur bestowed on the Royals from the Conservatives. Get over it. Move to a non-commonwealth country. Hide in your basement until it's over if you must, just spare the rest of us from you incessant childishness will yah?

People are so short sighted. The Monarchy is far cheaper then the alternatives for Canadian tax payers. From the Royal Family to the Govenor General, it is still cheaper then replacing it with an elected President who would still be a figurehead. In a Parliamentary democracy your head of state and head of government cannot be the same person. Thus, we need either a Govenor General (unelected) or a President (elected). Both would carry out the same function but given the realities of elections and the need for an elected person to appear to do that much more then an unelected person, the President in the long term would be far more expensive. So thats a purely economic argument. The other argument is that the Monarchy is part of our history, every other country embraces its history because it is part of their national identity, its sad but in Canada we seem so eager to through out own identity away in exchange for this thread bare idea of multiculturalism. So many cultures come to Canada to embrace the history of their own homelands, why can't Canada embrace this part of our history. The Monarchy is part of Canada, and I for one welcome the Duke and Duchesses visit as part of Canadian culture and history.

Commentors or bloggers are not the general publics perception........people who spend their entire day in front of a computer and spout out how much they hate this & hate that......just miserable bunch of people who like to point blame and find everything that's wrong with the word instead of looking at what's right.

I have nothing against the royals, however, the Canadian taxpayer should not be paying to have our CF aircraft shuttle them from the UK and around the country. Here we are talking about budget deficits and cutting spending, well this far from practicing austerity. They are not even the head of the monarchy yet. The royals and their entourage should appreciate our economic situation and not getting a free ride at Canadian taxpayer's expense.

All this fuss and hoopla simply because of who your parents are and who you are connected to. Like the other commenter I wouldn't mind an all expenses trip across Canada but I guess my lineage puts me out of the running.

I am proud to be Canadian. I am proud to be part of the Commonwealth. I am proud of our ties to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I will be proud to one day call The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge my King and Queen. I am NOT raising my daughter to be filled with hate and instead, teaching her that their is value in our history because all that has happened (good and bad) makes us who we are today. Welcome to Canada William and Catherine. May your visit endear you to this wonderful country as we are blessed to be able to call it home.

Interesting. Based on comments made, we Canadians can't stand Americans and find the monarchy impossible. So, what do you want, or do you know? Much of the commentary is made by what appears to be people who have no idea at all as to our history, and the various offices observed. Yes, there's a lot of money being spent, but it does provide some value, unlike the millions spent on so called musicians who vacuum as much money as possible from unsuspecting innocents, gobble up taxpayer services, require gold plated extras (just like the Royals), and then with armoured trucks full of money in tow, leave the country. Then there's the poor millionaire athletes, don't get me started. Has anyone ever attempted to find the total cost of the various hockey riots which have occurred over the years?Personally, the thought of having the likes of Trudeau, Mulroney, Chretien and Harper as our 'Head of State" with the military being under their direct control really tests my gag reflex.

It's sad that in our supposedly pluralistic society people are just so focused on themselves and their own problems, lack of money, lack of ambition, lack of education to get the first 2. This is the future King and Queen of Canada. This country was colonized by the British and remains a member of the Commonwealth. If you don't like those facts or don't support the monarchy, tough. Nobody really cares. If you can't afford a 9 day tour of Canada, who's fault is that? Mine? Theirs? No, it's your fault and only your fault. Why should we become a republic simply because you lack the funds to take a vacation? The monarchy still means a lot to millions of Canadians, the majority in fact. It represents the gift the British gave us of civility, modernity, our legal system, the constancy of The British Empire, the empire that colonized the planet and turned Canada from an uncivilized, savage back water into one of the wealthiest nations in the First World. Do you people not understand that? Do you think France would have done that for us? The Canadian Monarchy represents a whole heck of a lot more than your petty problems and the historical delusions of a handful of les francophonie. Quit with the hateful tripe already. You sound like a bunch of uncivilized, mud hut dwelling hill billys.

I always obtain a sense of well being and peace whenever I read about angry, jealous people complaining about a lovely visit from the Prince and Princess, or other royalty. These uptight morons and separatists help me realize how fortunate I am to be able to see good in the world. Perhaps a history lesson might help the less fortunate to understand that Canada is part of the commonwealth. It's our SYSTEM, without which we are not a country.

I just don't understand; THEY are taking the vacation or " tour of Canada" yet "we the taxpayer" are flipping the bill. Who decided that this is an important thing for us to pay for. I thought are government was trimming the fat from our excessive payouts. Mr. Carney and others considered financial professional continue to tell Canadians that they are living their lives in record debt and should begin living with in their means. Should the same logic not be considered for the government WE voted for. Our government is in record debt, yet these elite university graduates, lawyers, financial professionals, etc, still spend like an addicted gambler at casino Niagara. Sorry, but our money could be better spent on CANADIANS, not on an out dated monarchy. I think all Canadians should submit their receipts from the next vacation they take to the government for reimbursement. Time for a reality check MPs.

I am not a monarchist, in fact we should possibly look at replacing our monarchy once Queen Elizabeth steps down or passes away. However, in keeping with Canadian tradition I welcome William and Kate with open arms and hope that they enjoy their 9 days in the most awesome country on the face of this planet.

much ado about nothing...a nice young couple and I hope their visit to our beautiful country is a memorable one. For all the right reasons. Of course there will always be somebody that wants to protest something using their presence as a stage. Go for it, stay out of their faces and let them see what a great country this is and what great people are here.

Nothing but another huge waste of taxpayer money. Wish someone would pay a 9 day, cross- canada tour for me and my wife.Think that I would much rather see the posties get a bigger raise than pay for this farce.Maybe we should just get rid of the monarchy altogether? Me thinks that this is a good idea!!
