Improved forensic technology has helped Laval police arrest a man who is accused of killing a young girl whose body was found in a swamp 16 years ago.

The body of nine-year-old Joleil Campeau was found in a swamp near her family home in the Auteuil district of Laval on June 16, 1995.

Campeau had been missing for several days at the time that her body was found.

Police announced a break in the case Wednesday night, when they arrested a 37-year-old man who is a Montreal resident.

Eric Daudelin appeared in a Laval court on Thursday morning, where he was charged with first-degree murder, sexual assault and forcible confinement.

Daudelin has served time for sexual assault and was investigated in connection with Campeau's death back in 1995.

Laval police Const. Franco Di Genova told CTV.ca that it is possible investigators could lay further charges against Daudelin beyond the three initial criminal counts.

"That's what was given for now," Di Genova said in a brief telephone interview on Thursday afternoon.

While police were not previously able to link Daudelin to the crime, they have made use of new technology to build their current case.

"Back then the technology wasn't what it is now," Laval police spokesperson Nathalie Lorrain told reporters Thursday.

A member of the Campeau family told CTV that the slain girl's mother says it is "a gift" to see an arrest in the case.

I am pleased for the family that they have caught who they think did this horrible crime. Now let the courts do their job. I for one think that we should bring back the death sentence for criminals who do such horrific things to anyone...not just children. It is the severest of all punishments and should be used for the severest of all crimes. Over the years there are at least ten that would be dealt this punishment if I had my way.

Bravo to the brave men and women who cared enough about this little girl and her family to work so tirelessly to bring this animal to justice. If the accused is proven to be guilty, I am confident his fellow inmates will extract further justice for Jolie. I pray this brings this child's family peace. The predators who would harm our children are not human and once proven guilty of such unspeakable crimes deserve to lose all rights and privileges like: citizenship, freedom of movement and even life.

I agree with the writers taking a strong stance against convicted murderers and have concerns for the lenient court and jail systems not accomplishing their job.For the religious commentator I would say lets quickly send them for judgement by their maker.

It is great to know that the police never give up on these crimes and murderers are caught eventually. May the family find peace at last !

For the families and the victims' sake I hope that they have caught the guilty party but getting a conviction and holding a perpetrator responsible is another story. I am sure the syndrome seekers are already working overtime to ensure that the person arrested has an excuse of some kind. Remember this is Canada where the law is written by lawyers to ensure that no lawyer will be out of work. After all a perpetrator in jail translates into any work for the law profession.

Whoa!! Hang on there Sparky. While I am glad to hear there hsa been an arrest,I think it's far to soon to say "justice" will be served. There is the matter of a trial, and proof "beyond a reasonable doubt".I'm all for justice for this little girl. But I usually insist on imposing it on the guilty party. But my worst fear,is the court system. That the person who was arrested will either confess to the crime,or be proven guilty, and then be handed a slap on the wrist,a short term in jail, then given a hug and sent on his/her way. I cannot speak for cases in the rest of Canada, but from cases in BC,I sentences for crimes like this look unreasonably lenient. We see people torturing, raping, molesting and murdering you children, and getting 10 years. We see a man who killed his three young children getting relesed back to the community because he had "mental" issues when he killed them.We have a man who killed 6 people in the most horrific way possible, now eligible for parole. Be hopeful people. But stand on guard. We are being seriously deceived about the notion of what real "justice" is.Psychologists and social engineers tell us these people are rehabilitated before they are released. If yo believe that, you are smoking the wrong tobacco. Some of these crimes are so horrific that I honestly believe the killer should remain in jail for exactly as long as the victim remains dead. Not all murderers, perhaps. But at least the ones who prey on women, children, the elderly,or the disabled.People who prey on the these people cannot be set free again.EVER. THEN we can say "justice" has been served.

I think the death penalty should come to Canada and these types of people should get the death sentence. I have no sympathy for guys who think they can do anything. Make them pay. Anyone who is definately guilty and there is no doubt at all they should have no choice. Why should they live when others have died at their hands.

thank goodness the police didn't give up! Now the family has some closure, but many questions to be answered.

Wonderful to know that the police have been working on this case for 16 years and finally caught a break. Let's hope and pray that it's the right person and that justice is served for this little girl and her family, although I'm sure it will be very difficult for them.

I am very pleased for trhe family, the years that have passed must have been a nightmare for all the family. My son was lost for 6 hours when he was small; those hours seemed unending; I cannot imagine 16 years of having a child unaccounted for. Now, how good it would be if we had a justice system that would deal appropriately with this animal.

RIP little girl. Hope the other side treats you better.

As for this man, I don't think we have a punishment thats fits the crime.

It's really surprising how you all think and arrest is a guilty verdict.
