Sad news for a such a courageous woman. She kept Terry's dream alive, and now Canada loses another Fox family hero.

It's what it is

Betty Fox, mother of Terry Fox, dies in B.C.

talking about
Betty Fox, mother of Terry Fox, dies in B.C.

Date: Fri. Jun. 17 2011 9:43 PM ET

Betty Fox, the matriarch who carried on her son Terry's dream of raising funds to fight cancer, died Friday morning in B.C.

"It is with considerable sadness that we share that our wife, mother and grandmother died at 8:25am (PT) this morning," the Fox family sad in a statement.

"Betty was comfortable the last few weeks and months of her life, was always full of wit and rarely alone."

The Fox family, including Betty, helped carry on Terry's goal of raising funds for cancer research long after his death. They established the foundation that bears his name and organize the annual Terry Fox runs held around the world.

To date, their efforts have helped raise more than half a billion dollars in Terry's name.

B.C. Premier Christy Clark called Fox a great Canadian who displayed courage while facing personal tragedy.

"On behalf of all British Columbians, I want to express my condolences to Betty's husband Rolly, her children and friends," Clark said in a statement Friday.

The Terry Fox Foundation had announced earlier this month that Betty was seriously ill. Her family did not divulge the details of her illness, except to say that she was not suffering from cancer.

News of her illness led to a wave of support from well-wishers across the country and beyond.

Rick Hansen, who crossed the globe by wheelchair to raise funds for spinal cord research and considers himself a family friend, called Betty "a remarkable Canadian who has made unprecedented contributions to Canada and the world" in a statement released earlier this month.

"She has been such an incredible ambassador for the legacy that her son left behind and also an incredible ambassador for the work that Terry started for it to continue," Fred Tinck, Terry's high school running coach, told The Canadian Press on Friday.

"I mean, when you think about the fact that Terry's run was, you know, 30 years ago and that it's still very much alive and literally tens of thousands, probably even hundreds of thousands of people who were not even born when Terry did his run are still running today in his legacy. I mean, that's an incredible accomplishment."

Betty's efforts at preserving her son Terry's legacy were recognized last year when she was chosen to help carry the Olympic torch into the stadium last year, lighting the cauldron at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

In January of 2011, at the unveiling of four bronze statues dedicated to Terry, she asked that a museum be erected to commemorate her son's journey.

The family is asking that people respect their privacy "at this difficult time."

Terry was diagnosed with bone cancer in 1977, at age 18, and doctors amputated his right leg above the knee.

On April 12, 1980, Terry set off on his Marathon of Hope in St. John's, N.L. He ran a marathon, or 42 kilometres per day, in the months ahead but was forced to stop running near Thunder Bay, Ont., after the cancer returned, this time to his lungs.

He died at age 22 on June 28, 1981.

Less than three months later, about 300,000 people took part in the first Terry Fox Run. The event was held at more than 760 sites across Canada and raised $3.5 million.

Betty and her son Darrell established the Terry Fox Foundation in 1988, which raises funds for cancer research in 28 countries by holding annual Terry Fox Runs.

Two other organizations have been set up in his name. The Terry Fox Hall of Fame opened in Toronto in 1994, which recognizes Canadians who have helped those living with physical disabilities. And the Terry Fox Research Institute opened in 2007, helping researchers to collaborate with cancer hospitals.

I remember we were travelling south on Highway 11, Southern Ontario, when we heard of Terry Fox's death, and now today I was in a Walmart parking lot when I heard of Terry's mom's passing. These are lives to remember forever. Condolences to their family, and may they rest in peace. Betty Fox had bestowed on her son the courage and perseverance which governed his walk, in the face of pain and fear, all those years ago; he is an amazing Canadian hero. Betty is no less a hero for raising and mothering her wonderful son!

I'll never forget the day that Terry Fox passed away, I was in my 5th week of basic training with the Canadian Forces. I'll never forget the sadness I felt for the loss of one Canada's greatest hero's ever, a true inspiration. His mother I will also remember as a true Champion of Terry's cause, who suffered the loss of her son and who carried the torch along with her other son Darryl to keep Terry's dream alive. I pray that the Fox family be comforted in this time of sorrow and thank you Mrs. Fox for your wonderful efforts and acts of love and kindness you showed with grace where ever you went and with whom ever you met.

I am sad to read Betty Fox has died. I remember the news stories and the mood in Canada when Terry was doing his run. I remember that feeling of hoping against hope, when Terry laid in a hospital bed, and my family was watching a fund-raising telethon in his honor, that he would beat his cancer and finish his run. And I remember how bruising it was to my heart and the hearts of Canadians, when Terry died. My heart today feels like it did the day Terry died. Thirty years ago, and then now, I know that the Fox legacy and dream to cure cancer will continue. As a result of Terry, progress in this area has been made and hopefully more cures for this dreaded disease will come to light soon. As I write this note and reflect on my thoughts about Terry and Betty Fox, I wonder what Terry would have said to those rioters in Vancouver the other day. I keep hoping that someone with Terry's spirit will unite Canada for a good cause once again. I am tired of waiting.Rest peacefully Betty. You were an awesome Canadian, like your son. At least the two of you are together again.

We lost a great Canadian today - Betty Fox. I had the priviledge & honour of meeting her, and her strength, courage and humility brought me to tears. I don't know how any parent can survive the death of a child, much less go on to accomplish what she did with her son's achievement and in his memory. We won't ever forget Terry, but she was the force that will propel his memory into eternity. It's no wonder she raised the greatest Canadian hero of all time. Cancer took her son, and then she gave him back to the world, for the betterment of all. Terry gave his life - Betty gave everything else. The world is a smaller place today for her passing.

Betty Fox was a fine example of caring and compassion for all Canadians to aspire to. She contributed two amazing things to Canada:1. She gave birth to and raised an amazing son who has gone down in history as one of Canada's greatest citizens.2. She relentlessly carried on Terry's work and helped raise millions of dollars to fight Cancer. I'm sure all Canadians condolences go out to her husband and family.

With all due respect to both you and your son for your tireless effort in raising funds for the cancer society you may rest assured that you did your part! My heart goes out to those left behind who will miss you! I have absolutely no beef what-so-ever with your accomplishment and I do not make lightly of it! However I do take issue with the cancer society, diabetes and all the others who are in consent need of more and more funding without much result. Somewhere someone and I have to believe that it is the medical profession and politics that are solely responsible for “creating” an abyss of never ending need in pretense of finding a cure. Facts are facts you don’t make money off of healthy people! Just for a moment imagine the jobs that would be obsolete. What I find unforgivable is that they go out of their way to create these diseases! I ask you what food is safe to eat—what product is safe to use? Please accept my condolences, a great lady indeed!

Let us remember she was opposed to the run and only picked up on the work of Terry Fox after he had established the Foundation and run. Terry is still the champion of this event and fundraiser and by simple relation does not mean the work is any more extraordianry than that of many other parents who go unnoticed doing work in their children's names. This is a bit of overkill.
