Horror at the violence that erupted in Vancouver after the Canucks' defeat in the Stanley Cup final Wednesday night has turned to outrage over a perceived failure to prevent the mayhem.

Bob Whitelaw, who helped research the riot that broke out following the 1994 Stanley Cup final, said he watched Wednesday night's events unfold "in disbelief."

Whitelaw said police ignored many of the 100 recommendations in an early draft of a report that stemmed from the 1994 investigation.

"It would have been reduced," Whitelaw told CTV News Channel Thursday evening when asked if the violence would have been as severe. "We had six games with no problem at all, win or lose for Vancouver. It was a seventh game in ‘94 and the seventh game last night that the plans fell apart for whatever reason."

Vancouver police said they arrested more than 100 people in the Stanley Cup riot, but most were released within 24 hours.

The majority of those arrested were detained for breach of the peace or public intoxication.

Eight remain in custody for more serious charges including break-and-enter, theft, mischief and assault. Two people have been charged in a stabbing.

Vancouver Police Chief Jim Chu said most of the people arrested were from outside of the city.

Earlier Thursday, Chu said authorities are determined to track down the "criminals, anarchists and thugs" who destroyed property and rioted in downtown streets after the game.

It took hours for police to bring the ferocious riots under control, as cars were overturned, store windows were smashed and smoke billowed from overturned vehicles that had been lit ablaze. Looters were seen stealing makeup, clothing and even a mannequin from major retailers that were targeted during the riots.

Chu said nine officers were injured during the riots, including one officer who needed 14 stitches after being hit by a brick. Another officer suffered a concussion. There were also officers who suffered "human bites," Chu said.

Police saw offenders carrying gasoline and fire extinguishers with them, suggesting that some of the people involved had come prepared to cause trouble.

Whitelaw said in his view, the violence was worse on Wednesday than it was in 1994, with more damage and "outright thievery."

According to Whitelaw, the overturning and torching of vehicles could have been prevented if police had removed all vehicles from the streets around the designated fan zones, which had been set up to allow spectators to watch the game.

But he also pointed out that police officers congregated in groups and appeared to be awaiting orders "while law breaking was occurring in their immediate vicinity."

"I was troubled by that, not just as a viewer but having participated in that study for so many months," Whitelaw said. "Once you start to let laws be broken -- broken windows, looting, damage to cars -- and let it go unchecked, it's a slippery slope and how do you recover?"

Whitelaw said the rioters likely caused at least $1 million in property damage, which will be "far outweighed by what I call the billion-dollar lost image that Vancouver is going to have to work at recovering over the next number of years."

Local hospital officials have confirmed that nearly 150 people needed treatment after the riots, though it is not clear if injured police officers were included in those figures.

Two of the injured parties admitted to hospital had been stabbed, while another male patient suffered head injuries and is now in critical condition.

As the riots raged on Wednesday night, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Roberston put the blame on "a small number of hooligans" who were looking for trouble.

"It's absolutely disgraceful and shameful and by no means represents the city of Vancouver," Robertson said.

On Twitter, Vancouver police said they would be releasing information on how members of the public can send in their pictures and videos of the riots to investigators.

Police struggled to control rioting

While the police had put many officers on the streets throughout the playoffs, they could not keep a lid on the rioting that ignited after the Canucks lost.

CTV's Atlantic Bureau Chief Todd Battis said the riots reportedly began with one fan lighting a on fire a stuffed animal looked like a bear -- apparently to represent the Boston Bruins who battled fiercely throughout the seven-game series.

"That led to a car being set on fire, a car that we're being told by at least one witness was brought down to deliberately be burned. And that really got things rolling," Battis reported Thursday.

With the chance to win a Stanley Cup gone, many Canucks fans could not understand why some people had decided to make the situation worse by taking part in riots.

"Tonight, what I've seen is a complete disgrace," said Beth Hope, a 28-year-old who moved to Vancouver two years ago from England.

Hope said she had tucked her Canucks jersey into her bag, after becoming "ashamed to be a fan" in the devolving atmosphere on the streets.

"It's insane, it's absolutely insane. What's the point? Our team lost -- why destroy our own city? I'm afraid."

Lifelong Canucks fan Chad McMillan was similarly disgusted with the rioting.

"This isn't what the Canucks are about," the 31-year-old said. "This isn't what their fans are about, this isn't what this city is about."

A black eye for Vancouver?

No matter what the mayor and other Vancouver residents said, the rioting drew attention all over the world.

Footage of fires burning on Vancouver streets were shown on CNN. On the other side of the Pacific Ocean, Australia's Sydney Morning Herald website showed photos from the riots.

Wai Young, the Conservative MP for Vancouver South, also made reference to the riots in Parliament during question period Thursday.

On Twitter, Young said "the violence is an embarrassment and absolute disgrace to our city."

Hedy Fry, the long-time Liberal MP for Vancouver Centre, said she believed the police handled the situation as best they could.

But she was a loss to describe the motivation of individuals that took pictures of themselves near flaming cars and stood by while looting raged.

"This is madness," Fry told CTV News Channel from Ottawa.

Robert Gordon, a criminology professor at Simon Fraser University, said there are at least two types of people who can be found in the midst of riot-type events: the main agitators and individuals who like to watch what they are doing.

For this second group, Gordon told CTV News Channel that their motivations appear mainly rooted "in the entertainment value of what's unfolding in the streets of Vancouver."

The Boston Bruins received a police escort when returning to the airport and they arrived in their hometown mid-morning on Thursday. They were greeted by several dozen fans who were eager to celebrate their win over Vancouver.

One thing everyone needs to consider is there were hundreds of police in the downtown core, however there were also about a hundred thousand people. When that many people have the mob mentality it then becomes an issue of officer safety if they were to take a more aggressive stance. The Vancouver Chief of Police should be proud of all the officers who responded, even those from other municipalities. For some people from within the media to ask about his resignation is completely ignorant.

Honestly! I think those idiots would have rioted either way. Any excuse. They should be made to pay for the cost of replacing and fixing downtown. If they cannot pay they should have to physically repay with hard labour for a year. If there are no consequences for these morons, why on earth would they stop? Hit them where it hurts. If they have no spare time, they can't dream up this moronic schemes.

I'm surprised the VPD did not appear to deploy any water cannons. I think that would have cleared the streets in a hurry. Instead, they seem to try to go one-on-one with crowds that outnumbered them 20-to-1. Water cannons would have put out fires as well. You can say the VPD couldn't afford water cannons but given what we spend on police budgets you have to wonder what the money is spent on instead.

I was born and raised in vancouver, it has always been a rowdy city, these people haven't grown up, they have a lot of hatered toward themselves, so they have to act out too others, yes it is sad to see a game go wrong. This is just a slap across the face for vancouver, we won't forget, but will forgive, if these people can forgive themselves. They will pay for this in due time.

This is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard or seen. These people need to grow up and understand that moronic behavior such as this will not change anything and will definitely not give them the gratification that they are trying so foolishly to obtain. Being a young sports fan, I am outraged of the image these idiots are portraying of Vancouver youth. You should be ashamed.

Hockey and Liquor seem to be the fertilizer for bad behavior. Why would we publicly fund a facility to house a Hockey team when we should be taxing them more and raising their liquor licensing fees to pay for added and much needed public services during events? If this is hockey, I for one do not want a team in my city!

We have heard over and over again how embarrassed, sad, upset and disappointed people are. Point taken. As a small business owner, my heart goes out to the small businesses that have been effected. But other than that I'm so excited and dare I say proud that people stepped out of their proverbial boxes and lived. They were in the now! Living! Passion, excitement, sex! Shame? No. It isn't acceptable to riot but I'm still proud that it happened. Maybe a little bit of Anarchy is good for us because it forces us to engage in life. Good for you Vancouver - let's focus on more than just people's "shame" about this.

In the future WALK AWAY! I was in Edmonton during the Stanley Cup run and the avenue was full of people. When a smaller group of losers started trouble the main group would move away. When they were exposed and no longer blending with the crowd the police were able to deal with the situation quickly. I was also on the Red Mile during Calgary celebrating with friends and they would do the same thing. When a small group of losers starts and you hang around it 1 makes police officers jobs harder and 2 you basically become part of the problem. Vancouver, please remember this when the Grey Cup comes.

After the aftermath of the horror hockey game last night, I would reccommend that Vancouver, a city that is now a medeival village to the outside world, take upon themselves, some form of mandatory program to teach some of those idiots who tried to burn Vancouver to the ground, some sensativity, a program in differences between a Frank Lloyd Wright building and a Mondrian, maybe a musical score by Glenn Gould or something else. As long as they create something other than their prior destructive behaviour, we may be on the right path.

I am VERY relieved to hear that they will search and persecute these idiots - people are demstrating at great risk to themselves all over the world to end much bigger oppression and disappointment than a hockey game. However, I actually think this has not much to do with the game - but large amounts of dumb, possibly drunk/high, people (mostly young men it looks like) devolving to the lowest common denominator of group think. They should be punished - what if it was their parents property that was destroyed (or theirs!) - bet the reaction would be different.

Those people do not represent who we are as real sports fans or Canadians. It is an embarassment of us all and it makes me sick. They should be proud that the Canucks had made it as far as they did. Boston had the right eidea to keep people out of their downtown during the games. The MORONS that did all this damage and destroyed all the property downtown SHOULD be held accountable and I sure hope that the people who say that they will be held accountable WILL hold them accountable and prosecute and not just blow smoke up our asses as politicians so frequently do ..You idiots that rioted shame on you .. Being a Vancouver citizen I am a Canucks fan through and through. I left work yesterday around 4pm and the city had such an amazing energy. Everyone was cheering and just happy and so supportive of our team.

It sure didn't last long

1 loss and those hundreds of "fans" suddenly became monsters. They are real fans, because the real fans would have been happy our boys even made it this far. We had an amazing year! the top team in the regular season and even pushed the stanley cup finals all the way to game 7! I can't imagine how our players feel, they deserve so much better than this.

shame on vancouver "fans" who were only committed for the glory that could've come with winning that cup. Being a fan means loving the team, win or lose.

Steve is absolutely right on the money about tracing this back to alcohol. The sale of alcohol needs to be banned for events like this.Notice how it's the 18-30 crowd doing all the destruction and looting? The city of Vancouver should impose a special tax on the sale of alcohol until the damage has been repaid in full.

Absolute disgrace is the correct statement! Where is the true sportsmanship??? Let's face it! Boston is the stronger of the 2 teams. The 3 games that Canucks won, they won by just a single goal! BUT... When Boston won they won by a huge margin!!! 7 goals, 4 goals, 3 goals and yesterdays' 4 goals! There is always the next season!!!!

I grew up in Vancouver and left in the late 70s.At that time I saw the persona changing. Back then it would be the mass beach parties at Jericho Beach and Kits.Cops would show and people damaged their vehicles. And over the years I would go back and forth to the city. The youth of Vancouver today are more violent and stupid as they always have a point to prove. The Canucks lost get over it.Why go destroy your home in the name of fun for pent up youth aggression. But the worst is why nobody tried to stop it.Vancouver is gone from world class to world ass city.

Alcohol should be consumed with even greater care than tobacco, because it alters personality and can bring out the worst personality traits. I hope that Vancouver Mayor will, indeed, find the vandals, because alcohol isn't an excuse and they are vandals, for sure.

For Boston to "win" a reminder it was two Canadian boys from "Quebec" who scored the winning goals...too bad we can't have teams here with our Canadian players..and play against the USA players...the USA know where the best players come from...look at Wayne Gretsky, Bobby Orr and the list goes on...these animals were not "fans" just out to be destructive...hope they find the parents and make them pay up or anyone old enough to pay themselves for damage they caused...

I wonder how long it will be before the conservative media start blaming this mayhem on "radical left-wing anarchists" who are mad at Stephen Harper. In reality, this carnage was cause by a mixture of alcohol, stupidity and an institutionalized acceptance of violence in hockey.

the people who did this are not true hockey fans. They probably couldn't tell the difference between a hockey puck or a football. They were there to create a problem. You don't show up to a hockey game or a street party with a gas can in your hand. I feel truely sorry for the real fans and the people of Vancouver as so many fingers have been pointed at them. The people who need to be embarassed are the people who raised this mob. I have 5 boys myself all true hockey fans and if anyone of them participated in something like this the police would be the least of their worries. Very sad day for hockey.

Listening to CTV's live riot coverage, one girl said she'd heard a guy near her bragging that he'd brought his truck, and intended to roll it and burn it after the game, no matter who won. The fact that he wore a Canuck's jersey is irrelevant. Was this an insurance scam? The rioting and looting had precious little to do with the disappointed but decent people who make up the majority of Canuck's fans.I am still proud of the Canucks, who had a great run, despite the ending. Congrats to the winners.

It isn' t what the city is about. This is a universal problem. It is about how we are raising children in these days of neglect, permissiveness, irreligious morals, lack of discipline and crime with no consequences.Simply put...they do not love and respect themselves, or their neighbor, or their community.

For those who think that Police did not do enough, I shall beg to disagree at one point with all of you: Crowds are goal-less. They are aim-less. If the police would have intervene in that crowd, they would have made an enemy of themselves and that would have caused even more havok. I think their strategy was to let people smash a couple of things till most of their hot-headedness dies down and they manage the smaller crowd.... However, Im sure they could have done more if they had more effective training in large crowd management. During the Olympics, for example, the police had a larger budget and much help from other provinces and organisations. However, They did not have what they had then. Hence, it would have been hard to manage something like that if there is no training on the specific matter.

I live in a violent country where people kill for no reason but this shocked me more. Because it's Canada the country I choosed to live for thinking that Canucks are the best in the world.
Anyway, that's part of life. The most important is too see what will be the reaction of the government. I'm sure it will be different from the reaction my country puts for its citizens.

In my opinion, everyone who was in the vicinity is responsible for the last nights melee. The supposed "small group of agitators' is responsible. The people who stood around and watch happen, and did othing stop it, are responsible. The city officials and police department, who obviously weren't able to keep a cap on everything are responsible.

I got stuck in the riot in 94 and late last night got off work downtown at the end. I think this was a very different situation then before, to the police's credit. Last time the crowd was rushed with aggressiveness. Watch You Tube, they looked panicked and frazzled. In 94, the swift reactions lead to chaos. This time they were calm and authoritative. They are being called passive but I feel that their demeanor helped the non-trouble making people feel safe and ultimately diffused the situation in the right way.

What a disgrace ,but we should not all be judged by acts of this handful of idiots. The crowds should have dispersed and not empowered the culprits. All who stayed behind and made comments on TV of how ashamed they were should have left the scene. They are just as guilty. We should all be happy of the accomplishments of the Canucks this season and congratulate them on it, not smear their name this destruction.. The Bruins should also be congratulated on playing excellent games and winning the Stanley cup. It could have gone either way. In a final there is a winner and there is a loser, per say, and making it to the final, both teams are winners. A true sports fan would recognize this and applaud both teams equally. Shame on the sore spectators who left the game early .

The majority of rioters where wearing Canucks gear, that makes them Canuck fans. These people live in your city, they are your citizens. That means they represent your city. You can’t wash your hands of this Vancouver! Own it, it’s yours. As a Canadian I own it and I am ashamed. Thanks for making Canada look like a bunch of buffoons Vancouver! How did I know this was going to happen win or lose Vancouver??? As a Calgarian, I can own the fact that we have more class than you. This is proven. There certainly will be extensive arrests made following the posting of pictures of hundreds of perpetrators thanks to social networking and smart phones in the pockets of most folks on the streets. This is a huge change from 1994. I suggest that many of the otherwise 'good' folks who got involved in the rioting just because of the number of people already involved will learn the hard way that this behaviour is not tolerable and that there is no immunity just because you are going along with a crowd. I think some of the best discouragement for this sort of mob behaviour moving forward will be the effectiveness of social media to track down hundreds of perpetrators and hold them accountable long after the smoke clears.

These guys know that they will be identified by police but they don't care. The police even recognized many of them as the same rioters from the Olympics. They got away with it then so this time there were three times as many and damage was much worse. The police are not at fault here. Our legal system has to step up and put these guys behind bars. This is not just vandalism and theft. It is rioting and should be dealt with much more severely.

Very sad, really. Vancouver has become a great hockey town, and the Canucks represented the city, the country, and the league well in this series. Yes, it would have been nice to see the cup back in Canada for a year, but Boston was exceptionally good this series, and without doubt deserved to win. Congratuations to them. But lets not throw away the baby with the bathwater. Vancouver is a great city; it just takes a few deviants to put on a performance as they did with the riots, and a group of others to follow. This does not represent Vancouver, nor does it represent Canada. The police did a good job, and probably prevented a lot of further damage. Go Canada, go Vancouver (another year maybe) and well done Bruins!!

My 2 cents. I believe the biggest failure to contain the cituation was due to a complete lack of leadership by Vancouver. How many times have we seen riots break out after a sport match? It happens all over the world. I think that if there would have been someone like a musician, or some one young Canadians look up to hosting the game on the streets this would not have happened. A positive role model guiding the crowds after their team lost. Instead the city let the black sheep of town lead the chaos. Group think, adrenaline, alcohool (not the cause), testosterone, and no one steering the crowd in the right direction were the leading causes.

Vancouver, no matter how you try to blame this on anarchist agitators, the photos tell the true story. There are actually 3 types of people involved here; agitators, observers and asses. And it's mostly the latter that you see throwing punches as the police with big smiles on their mouths and cheering the burning cars. They derive a thrill from the chaos. This group is not an insignificant portion of your populace. Young kids. Punks. Your "tolerance" for drug abuse and illicit activities in your core is coming back to haunt you. Until the rest of your population stands up to them and says NO instead of photographing them, your reputation is deservedly blackened. Sorry, but you're Vancouver the Hood, not Vancouver the Good.

What was equally shocking were the large number of people standing around who thought that this was just a big joke and were egging them on by laughing and taking their photos. Something has to be very wrong in Vancouver where they already knew from past behavior what some of their citizens were capable of. They set this mega disaster up by catering to a party of over 100,000, that common sense alone should have told them that they couldn't control. This was shameful for Vancouver, B.C., and Canada. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. This time we lost the game (fairly) but Vancouver loses it's credibility.(again) Not even worth the time and effort to comment on the absurdity. I hope the police had the power and the backing to put away as many of the irresponsible for as long as possible as allowed by law. We need giant tasers, yes GIANT tasers, that shock some of these groups back to reality.

It wasn't just 300 rioters = look at the videos. Thousands of people cheered them on. Dozens of people walked by clearly injured women and didn't offer support. Thousands could have left the area and not participated by cheering on the rioters. Van police - make a website and encourage all to upload pics - but then also offer rewards to anyone who correctly identifies the rioters. These chumps will sell their friends out for $50. These people are the future of our city. PS - Miami didn't riot when the lost the NBA championship, NY didn't when the blew a 3-0 lead to the Red Sox, and the list goes on. Don't tell me we are somehow more 'moral' than American fans. Montreal rioted too.

It is time for the Mayor of Vancouver and the Premier of BC to do the classy thing and fly to Boston and give the Bruins the applause and recognition those in the stadium so ignorantly did not. I was appalled when the crowd booed the winners and turned the TV off in disgust. Hearing about the riots today and the need to have a police escort for the Bruins makes me feel ill. Absolutely and stunningly shameful. Anyone who participated or egged the rioters on is a disgrace to Canada. A bunch of spoiled selfish brats in my opinion.

The rioting and violence after the hockey game had nothing to do with winning or losing, or the Canucks, or the game of hockey, the police, the residents of the city of Vancouver or Canada for that matter. It had to do with a group of people (using that word loosely) who had already decided they were going to do this and used the large crowds to their advantage, and the drunken state of others to escalate the situation. Lets make sure we don't give them what they want, the glory they think they deserve. They are an embarrassment. The rest of us are already ashamed enough. Now we need to turn our focus on the volunteer who are helping cleanup. They are Vancouvers heroes!

From the live footage I watched last night and the pictures emerging today, this was definitely NOT "a small number of hooligans" as some would like to believe. It was a large scale mob mentality with hundreds, if not thousands of people involved. It also wasn't only young people as some have suggested. Take a look at the pictures and some of the footage. Those losers ranged in age from about 16 to about 50!I cheered for Vancouver throughout this series, but honestly I'm glad they lost. The dirty plays by the team and disgraceful actions of their fans prove they didn't deserve to win.Vancouver and Montreal. Neither city's fans seem to be able to control themselves and show a little class. With all that said, kudos to those few people who showed up with brooms and bags this morning to help salvage what little dignity their city has left.

Someone made a comment saying "where Marijuana & booze is flowing, there is trouble."Thousands of people gather in Vancouver every year for 420 celebrations and they are always peaceful. People smoking marijuana don't start riots. Alcohol and complete stupidity start riots. Aside from the people actually doing damage(whom there really are no words for and who i doubt will feel any remorse no matter what people say to them), the police were way too slow off the draw and WAY too polite and the "innocent" bystanders sticking around for hours to take pictures and watch, you only fueled the fire. If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem.

The riot wasn't caused solely by a small group of "hooligans", it was fueled into a riot by the large number of people who choose to cheer on, laugh at and encourage the dirtbags who perpetrated this. If you were there as a follower, you're just as guilty as the people who committed the crimes. If you were there, but got out/discouraged/tried to stop what was going on, then I truly feel sorry that you got to see the kind of scum that you have to share your city with.

There is a saying, "You do the crime, you do the time." Maybe you don't agree with jail time, but being part of a chain gang to clean up the mess and perhaps keep the city clean for the summer would be a great deterrent for future stupidness. Also a sign on their back "Yes, I was a total IDIOT, the night the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup." would reinforce the outcome of poor choices.

This riot isn't new to Vancouver, this is just a recreation of the 1994 Stanley Cup riots in downtown Vancouver. Why were the Police not positioned to respond quickly in the hot areas? This was not rocket science that a probable riot would break out based on previous riots. The City of Vancouver and the City Police were definately not prepared for this. Now as in previous riots these Neanderthals have to be tracked down by the police by using photo, and video identification and help from the citizens. Our Judicial system as everyone knows that when these punks are found and arrested that they only get a slap on the wrist. When will Vancouver ever learn? This riot will have put a stain on vancouver for years to come.

Thousands of people are dying in the Middle East and Northern Africa for civil rights and freedoms. Those same people are out in the streets protesting against malicious regimes, risking their lives. It seems silly that people in Vancouver should be rioting over a sporting event. An event based on a team of adults playing a game for entertainment. It's hard to believe we are in a civilized country when I watch the news and see the actions of a bunch of morons in Vancouver looting and vandalizing the downtown. I'm proud to be Canadian and I don't consider those people my equals and nor do I believe they deserve the same civil rights as me. Way to go Canada's team, world class city. You say the rioters weren't fans? Hmm, they were downtown watching the game in their nice Canuck's jerseys. That sounds like fans to the rest of us, but you keep telling yourselves it's not so. And don't step on any broken glass during the parade.

when is the vancouver mayor going to wake up. what world does he live in. how do you invite 100,000 folks to downtown with minimal security and then brings in reinforcements two hours after the riots started. The mayor has to take responsibility for his inability to secure the good residents of vancouver. He states it was a few hoodlams but we watched it from dallas and it was thousands of people participating in the riots and saw hundreds of people running into Sears. He has put a black mark on the city that will effect tourism for many months and maybe for years to come.

Oh Vancouver, what went so wrong? "These were just a few idiots" we are told. Really? I am seeing hundreds in the footage and not the same three or four people! The Police? Well it was nice to see one or two turn up and try to quell the violence. Everyone knew this could well happen, but Police barely showed and were far to polite to the tanked up rioters who were well past civil discussions. Vancouver: watch how other forces in the UK, German, US and Greece deal with this. They divide, box and arrest. They trun fire hoses on the crowds to disperse and "dampen spirits". They move forcefully and decisfully. This is a beautiful city but it takes more than a "Few" to start a riot and more than a "few" police to stop it!

The riots are absurd. These people are not sports fans and I am reluctant to call them Canadians. There is no sportsmanship, just destruction and rage from these people. There has been nothing learned from the last riots, except for the police doing their best to keep the peace. That really puts a balck eye on Vancouver.

Look through the picture sources and you'll find the guys on the truck on a two minute video destroying a smart car. Shouldn't be hard to find them as they are obviously skateboarders ( see the video ) Two choices, jail sentence or make them swallow their skateboards whole while rolling around on broken glass!

As for the media who surreptitiously encourage this sort of thing in the name of "news", how about stepping up in the form of a front page section with close up pictures of each and every rioter. It wasn't many and I'm sure it would ostracise them quite nicely!

I can't believe my eyes as I watched the footage of all the damage done in Vancouver after the game.... when are these idiots ever going to grow up.... these days and it is still going on .... it makes it hard to even want to enjoy being a fan for sports now a days... understandable wanting their home team to win but both teams worked hard to bring home the cup and the winner got the cup as it has been for year after year.... so why did these idiots find it necessary to destroy so much and make it so bad for all of us the ones responsible for this should have to clean up all the mess and pay for all the damage besides jail time as this has to stop!!!!! Makes me feel ashamed to call my self a fan!!

Just as they showed the world how beautiful a city Vancouver is and how passionate and patriotic the fan base is during the Olympics (a short 16 months ago), they absolutely tarred & feathered that same image. This will take a long time to forget from peoples memories.

It will be doubly sad if the result of last night's idiocy is a veering away from the sort of healthy public gatherings that characterized the Olympics, the playoffs prior to game 7, and innumerable other cultural events that make Vancouver a fun city to live in. The best response to this should be severe punishment of those involved, without penalizing the vast majority of Vancouverites who participate in public events with civility and pride. The morons who attacked our city last night must face consequences that will deter any future generations of like-minded simpletons.

Until hockey becomes the game it could be, and kids are not taught to punch it out at center ice, I would never encourage kids to play or watch. a few bad apples will always ruin the bunch, no matter what the situation will be.
Unfortunately alcohol was probably the main source of the problem. This drug is well known for giving people brass balls and turning situations worse when people gather in large numbers.
This would probably not have happened if everyone was baked. People would still be happy if they lost, say good game for the other team, and passed along that doobie in peace, or just passed out from to many tokes during the game.

Maybe we should look into the root of the problem a little further..

I am from the states and live in Vancouver and had never heard of those riots. Plus I was only 8 at the time. A lot of people in the photos/footage I am seeing are from people my age. Is it possible that they heard about those riots and decided maybe we should do it to be cool? Or if they did back it back then maybe we can do it now and get some free stuff from stores, and break stuff.
I am in no way blaming media, blogs, etc, but I don't think they helped the situation.
And I just want to say a huge thank you to the police officers and firefighters who did an amazing job last night!

People complain if there isn't enough police present only after chaos happens but complain when they see some around before anything happens. No police bashing now as you can't have both. I would hope that its not fans that did these disgraceful things and it would be the same stupid gang that did their mess during the G8/G20. I doubt those trouble-makers realize the scope of the problem they caused. I wish they could see themselves in the same way the rest of Canada does and show some remorse for their actions. The problem with this type of person is that they truely do not care what regular folk think, they only relate to their peers, who are also scum and low-lifes and totally out of touch with the pulse of Canada. They likely don't read the news, watch it, or have any relations with regular people, so unfortunately they are probably unaware there is even a problem!

Let's not jump the boat people.Coming from someone who lives in a place where hockey riots happen (Montreal), I can tell you that there's people out there that just wait for occasions just like this to start a riot and break/steal things. I'm willing to bet most of the people in the riots in Vancouver, just like the ones in Montreal, aren't really hockey fans or at least don't do it for the hockey; most of them just get swept by those few who want to start chaos.

Then you have drinkers and others "|I have no responsibilities" yound people who just got on the bandwagon. Knowing our justice system I can only predict the farce that is about to happen. I am ashamed this morning. Anyone arrested or identified as being there should be given a choice; 2 years in jail, an automatic $25 000 fine or a get the hell out of my province card. and. No trial. just that choice. On welfare? no worries, we can take that away too! Now if I hear one stupid person talking about police brutality, I will snap. Spoiled, arrogant miscreants possibly further inhibited by an over indulgence with alcohol. This was terrorism of good city and its citizens that was calculate by a few jerks without any attributes other then misery & mayhem.Luckily, the fires remained outside of major business or residential areas. Had fires been started inside these buildings (I.E condo's) this could have become a major conflagration with major death & destruction. To control Anarchy and to prevent death and destruction to the innocent, the use of deadly force should/must be considered. Targeting the evil few, to protect the innocent majority!

Cops assemble. Viewers are upset and disturbed. Mayor gives speech and expresses disgust, supports the restraint of the police. Everyone complains. "Where are the police?" Police show up, crack down. Tear gas flies. Mob is dispersed. People blame slow response of police. Someone got detained and their feelings were hurt. Press picks up the story. "The police are out of control!" I have to say one thing is why after the 1994 riot in Vancouver that the inquiry reports were not followed? The tax payers paid a lot of money for that inquiry & due diligence was not followed. When these so called fans that caused all the trouble are arrested they should have to pay a portion of the damage as well as a heavy fine.

This used to be common place in England many years ago after soccer matches. They dealt with it and it no longer happens there. Maybe we should speak to the British for advice. There is no doubt that a few instigators planned this in advance. It only takes a small group of thugs to get a bunch of receptive youth to follow. Send the followers to boot camp and the instigators to a very long jail sentence. Also stick them with the cost of the cleanup and the bill for policing. Maybe they can pay it back with a very long period of community service keeping Vancouver streets and parks clean.

Okay, I also feel it is ridiculous that there is riots about a hockey game, but none when it comes to social issues plaguing the country and the world. It goes to show me that those who did riot, were people without any respect for sport and NO respect for Humanity. It is people like those that rioted that create a bad image of protesters and spread fear whenever the next time a large crowd of people get together. What about the teams that haven't made a Stanley Cup Finals in 44 years (Toronto) let alone the playoffs in 6 years? Should we go blow up Toronto next year if we cant do it?Anyways I am sure that this wasn't the majority of people in Vancouver causing the riots, rather it was a smaller bunch of no-good for nothing a**holes that have some mental problem causing them to find a reason to steal and destroy. Don't start calling them socialists either, because true socialists wouldn't go psycho over a game. They are busy worrying about serious problems, like poverty, debt, war etc. leave the political ideologies of these idiot people out of it. We shouldn't judge all of the citizens and the city. @ RouqWhile it is disappointing to see this level of disrespect and destruction, I don't think it's fair to isolate one specific demographic as responsible or not responsible. It's ignorance and a lack of regard for those living in these areas that has lead to this situation in the first place. Perhaps be a little more careful of casting blame and saying who is or isn't involved. Unless you've talked to everyone on the streets last night you can't possibly know this.

People full of anger waiting for any excuse to unleash their rage. These events will continue to happen and the level of violence will escalate unless we all get very honest with ourselves and each other about the degree of rage we carry inside. No amount of policing or innovative police tactics will matter. The bottom line is anyone living out of alignment with their true authentic self carries some amount of rage. Take aways: 1. Do not visit violent and ridiculously expensive city of Vancouver. Everything "beautiful" about it has nothing to do with the city (i.e. mountains, ocean, etc).2. Canadians are hoodlums who drink too much. The alcohol industry who encourage it will profit nicely from last nite but even with all the taxes collected the riot puts the public in a net loss position.3. "Professional" sports franchises - already heavily subsidized by taxpayers - have proven once again that they are not an asset: they're an expensive embarrassment. "Fan zones" were the most shameful kind of official pandering to these kinds of "sports" events imaginable. Rather than promoting participation or sportspersonlike conduct every political leader imaginable chose to promote partying, beer and shrieking (that's what professional sports are about). Shame.

These acts of violence are not only a disgrace to the NHL, Canucks or Vancouver, they are also a disgrace to Canada. I thought us Canadians had a lot more class than that. Those that get caught for the vandalism (due to the thousands of videos and pics taken, duh) should not only have to pay for damages but should spend a little time in jail and think about what those beers at the game led to. And if some of those idiots were actually sober when they committed the crimes, then they should be punished to the full extent of the law. Maybe a week or two or four without a paycheck will make them think twice about what they have done. That will look good on the next resume they send out after they get fired from the job they had before they went to the game.

I was not surprised to see how fast the behavior of the crowd disintegrated into wanton, reckless abandonment of logic or fear of consequence. Riot and mob mentality can overtake simple minds who get sucked into the frenzied excitement of disrespecting authority and damaging property. This could have happened in any major city in North America. Having policed major events in Edmonton in the past, I can attest to seeing first-hand the challenges connected to dispersing crowds. It's like trying to push a puddle of water up a hill. So, future cities with major sports teams beware. Prepare, prepare, prepare. The police can only do so much. Hat's off to the real residents of Vancouver who tried to stop the damage and looting.

As much as I agree with what everyone is saying about how the bystanders were just there for pictures, some were actually trying to leave the riot. They were unable to due to roadblocks, and that in turn made them get lost inside the madness that is now known as the "Vancouver Riot 2011". I wasn't here yet to undertsand the destruction of the '94 Riot, but from what I've heard it was a lot calmer than this one was, and now, this event will have put a black eye on Vancouver for years to come, and those who took part are going to look back in a few years and say," Why? What was I thinking?" This event is a disgrace to what us Canadians are thought of to be. We're supposed to be warm, welcoming, respectful people. Last night was a side that everyone has; destructive, anarchistic, and aggressive. These traits brought out by alcohol. Everyone has these traits, yes, but why show them off after a hockey game? And why destroy a city while doing it?

As for those who think the team should be punished or moved, get a grip, it wasn't the team out there rioting so don't punish them, they probably already feel liken crap.

Should follow the lead of how Europe dealt with football hooligans in the 70's and 80's. First bar the Vancouver Canucks from participating in next year Stanley Cup playoffs regardless of where they finish the regular season. (as was done to Liverpool). Second make them play behind closed doors for X number of games. (As was done for Real Madrid and other teams). Thirdly identify individuals, bar them for life from attending any home or away games of the Canucks, and prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

I get a kick out of Vancouverites trying to convince an appalled Canada, and world, that their criminal rioters were not really true Canuck fans nor true city residents. Oh, were all those thugs wearing Canuck sweaters from Boston? Were the arsons, thefts, assaults, and other terrorism, the work of agitators brought in from Neepawa, Manitoba, and Sussex, New Brunswick? Were those smiling, laughing, and cheering bystanders joyfully taking pictures, all tourists from Idaho?

An abysmal failure by the Vancouver Police Department to anticipate, plan for, and properly address rioting. Only an ignorant fool would argue that this violence came out of left field and was entirely unexpected. Rather, it was talked about, worried about, and discussed by many, including members of the national media, prior to Game 7. It was in the air as a legitimate concern, and countless people knew that if the Canucks lost, especially, based upon the city's history there was a good chance that a major problem was going to unfold. Ridiculous, and inexcusable. The Mayor of Vancouver needs to have a serious chat with VPD's Chief Constable. Such an unnecessary international black eye for a special Canadian city.

While I watch these events unfold (and other past similiar events), I find them always to be ignorant of personal loss across the board (including the people directly involved). One of the events that particularly caught my attention was video of people trying (unsuccessfully) to flip a half ton truck. It wasn't so much the attempt as it was the riffling through the back of the truck that got me. Someone else's coolers and personal belongings getting tossed around with blatant diregard. One positive (I feel) that will come out of this is that most people causing problems had there faces uncovered (easily identifiable...."what were you thinking" ) and recorded by several different sources. The next few months will be story after story of involved individuals being arrested and charged."Electric eye"

I really hope that All of the Ass***** involved are punished to the fullest extent of the law, not only have they tarnished the Team, but they have disgraced our Country. The Message should show that Canadians as a Whole will not tolerate these actions. A small group of people have made a very bad mistake, and they should be made pay for the damage they have caused. That was a disgusting display of childish behaviour and all living in Vancouver should be ashamed of themselves for it. The police, dispite having a plan, should have been far more heavy-handed in the way they dealt with those savages as well and made it clear to these "people" that behaviour like that has consequences. Furthermore those that were and will be arrested should be collectively given the bill for all the damage that was caused and forced to pay for it, either by garnishing wages, seizing their personal property or making sure that they serve enough community service, at their expense, until everything is paid off. After their lengthy jail sentences of course. Object lessons need to be made and examples need to be set for these thugs. It won't erase Vancouvers shame, but at least it might serve to remind people that behaviour like this is not tolerated by any stretch of the imagination in a civilised society. We live in a free country where freedom of exppresion is one of our most cherished rights. It is not a right, however, to go around destroying property, causing riots and terrorizing communities because a group of people are not happy over something or did not get thier way, be it in sports, politics or society in general. Anyone who does engage in behviour like that, in any city or town, should be treated extremely harshly and without mercy and be made to pay for their crimes.

I am convinced last night events is the results of a small group of people that specialized in using popular sports events to generate riot like manifestation.Canadians are by no means violent people. People responsible for violent events like these are criminals and are not representative of people from this country. We had similar events in Montreal and the trouble makers leaders were very limited in numbers. The problem is that it only takes a few bad seeds to drag enough peoples into this mess and make it looks ugly!I suggest that during these events a system of high res camera be install to locate, document and convict the few individuals responsible for these act of violence. Something must be done about this before public events becomes unsafe.

What I think is wrong is other people saying that the police should be more aggressive. And what if they would have been? those people would then say the police was too aggressive. people hate the cops if they are too soft or too aggressive and when they are being arrested but always want them when something is wrong. Anyways, what happened in Vancouver was really stupid and all this over a hockey game? How old are you people? 5? What is wrong with our country? People riot over a game played by millionaires, but are silent on social injustice and the eroding of our quality of life? If we could harness this energy to protest things like rising gas prices and food costs, what a real difference we could make. I’m not advocating violence or torching cars, but the exuberance and zeal could improve our society, rather than destroying property for no reason at all. Sad really, I guess we get what we deserve. Funny how the proletariat are distracted by sport, and lash out at their country men who try to improve their lot in life (i.e. Canada Post Employees) rather than the Bourgeois who control the economy. It seems no matter how much money we pump into policing it doesn't help in situations like this. They knew this was a possibility and were not prepared. It will happen again because when these things happen the leadership of the police force is backed by the politicians instead of making them accountable. Someone needs to lose their job for this. Look at the mess in toronto and the chief just keeps on with no consequences for a poor job performance. My opinion fire them and maybe the next guy will do better.

The reason the police couldn't get to all of the area in which the riots took place is because of two reasons. There was clearly a lack of numbers on the police side. I do not know how many cops Vancouver has on payroll but they should have had more and should have had RCMP preporsitioned to assist knowing what happened in 1994 and when the Canadiens got beat out a few years back. Secondly the police should have contained the riot in one place as opposed to trying to disperse the crowd. This would of contained the violence in one area as opposed to spreading it throughout the city. By "boxing in" the instegators and arresting them on site and allowing law abiding citizens to leave on their own accord they may have been able to contain the situation as opposed to spreading it throughout the city. This, again, could only have been accomplished with sufficient numbers, which they did not have.

Say what you will but I'm certain the some of the looters and rioters are citizens of Vancouver as well as some who consider themselves anarchists and professionals. The sad thing is that as this continues for major events, no city will want to allow such events to take place within their borders. This is the future I'm certain of it.

This is so sad. All the watchers should have gone home instead of staying around to take videos for utube and send to the t.v. stations, this would have made the job for the police much easier. Sad that many youth have become so disrespectful to other people property.

This type of thing happening in other countries too... disgusting. Maybe we are just too well fed and watered these days to appreciate others' property, respect other people's possessions and obviously must have had morons for parents.

What a disgusting display ! Certainly doesn't represent the majority of Canadians or encourage US relations. I was thinking of visiting Vancouver but now I.m not too sure.

All Emergency crews did a great job. Unfortunately, it needed to be done. Hopefully all those 'smart' people will be caught and punished. Shameful to those that disgraced the lovely image of Vancouver. You need to go to boot camp and work camps and maybe learn a bit of respect for others.

Why is anyone "so shocked"? While I know the majority of Vancouver residents are good people and respectful Canadians....it happened in '94 so why do you think it wouldn't happen again?

I know the majority of the people of Vancouver were not a part of this. The ones that were involved are just plain stupid. I am embarrassed and disgusted. Thanks to the emergency services/police/fire fighters that helped to bring this under control.

Very poor planning by the city of Vancouver and their Police Services. No excuse for this if a plan had been put in place. You would have thought that after 1994 they would have been prepared but everyone including the Police said everything will be OK. They just did not wnt to spend the money to prepare for this riot as it would have cost them thousands in overtime costs to man the streets like they should have. They will say nothing happened after the other three games,,,but this was final game. The people and business owners in Vancouver should be sreaming for answers from their politicians. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

What did city officials think they were doing by putting up 25 foot screens in the middle of downtown? Did they think nothing would happen? Next time there's a major event perhaps a little forthought into public safety would be a better idea. Hope all the video results in many charges.

Had the Canucks won, this would have happened anyways. Black eye on the city of Vancouver, province of BC, Canada, the Canucks and the NHL....
