In case people forget, Zellers isn't Canadian owned already. They are owned by Hudson's Bay which is owned by another American company.

I am worried that target will be just like walmart.
I dont want low prices at the cost of some ones livelihood .

Too bad the Canadian companies dont compete. Targets mechandise trumps the quality of what Zellers now carries

Hooray for Target! More competition means less overcharging by Canadian retailers. As it is I do a large part of my shopping at WalMart because of their way lower prices - now I'll have another place to shop without fear of being royally ripped off.

I'm glad. I read they will invest approx $10M to renovate each location and some of these stores need it bad - Zellers was falling apart!

About time there was some options for shopping in Canada. Target is a great store. Can't wait until a lot more come up. Maybe we'll finally get some lower prices in canada!

What a mistake allowing another US company to buy-out a Canadian company. Does no one care what the Americans are doing in other countries. To much bad stuff.

Re: Target Stores in Canada

I have shopped Target Stores in the
US and found them to be cheaper than most Walmarts.Quality is excellent and service is tops.I only wish we could see more of these stores in Saskatchewan.

To Tono,Why would it matter if they come up to Canada. Zeller's is already owned by an American so Zeller's really isn't a Canadian company anymore. Did you protest when Walmart, Costco or Bestbuy moved into Canada??? I do hope they maintain the employees (or at least the ones who deserve to stay) to maintain stability and carry the same or at least most of the products they carry in the States.

Zellers used to be a good store to shop in years ago but not any more. Lately it has reminded me of a ju nk shop. If this store offers better then I'm all for it. However iI just hope it's not another walmart. All hype and no action

An employee at a local Zeller's here in Ottawa told me that they wll be offered positions but that they have been told that all the positions are parttime and there will be no benefits (sick leave, etc.). I guess we would have to wait from official word from Target itself before we know for sure. I can't imagine the news is good for the employees though.

Maybe my nearest Zellers is in transition already, at least I hope so, because I was terribly disappointed in what they had left in it. I will, of course, give it the benefit of the doubt, but it better improve drastically if they want my business.

"American troll eating up the Canadian retail industry"? Uh, not really. Zellers did themselves in with poor merchandising, store locations, etc. There are countless other Canadian retailers that are flourishing because they made better decisions (Sport Chek, La Senza, Canadian Tire, London Drugs, Loblaws, to name a few). This is a matter of a poor retailer being replaced by a better one. Has nothing to do with phoney "retail patriotism".

Target is no better than Zellers. I have shopped, or should I say 'walked' through a Target store in the US and they are over-priced to start with. The aisles were cluttered, staff were uneducated as to where items were. Comparing that to Zellers, I thought I was in a Zellers. I try to shop local and Canadian owned.

They may be a U.S. corporation but having them take over will help provide security for jobs here in Canada. Zellers isn't really doing so hot any more and so it would only be a matter of time before those jobs would have dwindled. By having Target take over it's going to rekindle things a bit. I do hope that they make an honest attempt to retain current Zellers employees rather than just wiping out everyone and starting fresh. --- I personally enjoy shopping at Target and at least now the taxes made on the money I spend there will be going to my own province.

Wow that's good to see them coming to Canada..if they bring the prices like they have in Watertown all the better. Look at all the Canadian jobs that Wally Mart have given to us here in Canada. No doubt many employees will be kept on..can hardly wait...

Sarah.. apparently, they will give current Zellers employees first chance at applying for Target positions. Which means that you will probably get your job back, but not your seniority.

Sad to see Zellers go, but isn't HBC already American owned?Whatever happened to Zeddy the bear? or Zee-y when translated to American.

All employees who want to stay. Part-time work with minimum wage, no benefits and no advancement. But the Tories will tell you about the thousands of new jobs created. I can see it now.

Last time I shopped in a Zellers, the displays looked like they had been attacked by wild animals and the staff were much more interested in talking among themselves and on their cell phones. When I finally got to the cash, the woman in front had an article that the scanner didn't price correctly (higher of course) and much to my surprise, same thing happened to me. Always found Target Stores in the USA to be attractive and well priced...not much of the "SAVE 70% THIS WEEKEND ONLY" that the Bay has always favoured. Don't you feel ripped off if you can't shop "that" weekend? lol Lower prices all the time seems to be the way the American retailers are going, and the customers seem to like it.

Zellers hasn't been Canadian for years. It's parent company - the Hudson Bay Company was sold years ago ...now it has just switched hands to another American company.

If you're mad about more market competition, then you're probably one of the retail goons price gouging Canadians despite our dollar being above par. This will NOT hurt Canada or Canadians, this will only benefit us and help bring retail prices down.
