The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is once again raising more than a few eyebrows, this time by giving away a free vasectomy to any man who's recently had his pet neutered.

"It's a two-fer: Get your animal companion fixed, and get yourself fixed too!" the group declares in the online promotion material for the contest, which runs through April 27.

How does a man getting a vasectomy help animals, you may wonder?

It seems PETA believes that humans are taking up too much space, crowding the planet and taking up precious resources that could be given to animals.

"Human overpopulation is crowding out animal life on the planet, and dog and cat overpopulation is creating a euthanasia crisis that is a crying shame," the group explains.

"Disappearing wilderness, vanishing water resources, and pollution is the price that future generations will pay for more human births, while losing their lives is the price that millions of homeless dogs and cats pay when guardians neglect to 'fix' their companion animals."

It goes on to say that the best way to combat the pet overpopulation crisis is to have cats and dogs neutered. "And with a global population of almost 7 billion humans, more of our species could use a (voluntary) snip too," the group adds

PETA says the contest is in honour of National Infertility Awareness Week -- even though that week, organized by the infertility awareness group Resolve, is dedicated to humans who actually want to reproduce, but are not able to do so.

Nevertheless, PETA is offering to make one lucky man "reproduction-free." All they have to do is provide proof that they had a pet neutered in the last month and then provide a short answer to the question, "Why should PETA neuter you?"

Whoever is selected the winner must then undergo the vasectomy within 12 months, at which point PETA will offer reimbursement for the cost of the procedure, to a maximum of US$500.

Interesting campaign, a bit on the bizarre side. But it is true, the planet is overpopulated with humans. This in turn puts pressure on wild animals, which is a real travesty. So, basically I agree with them.

People keep asking:"Why does PETA do this?""Don't they realize they're making themselves look ridiculous/irrelevant/completely ridiculous?"The answer to the latter is, yes they do!The answer to the former is, because it gets them on the front page of a national new website,

will they do the same for a spay? id be first in line for that!as for PETA, i wish they would go away. they give animal welfare advocates a bad name and make people think we're all wackos who want our pets dead rather than be 'slaves'.

More left-wing nonsense from a disconnected and narrow interest group. Of course - limit pets and people at the same time. After all aren't we nothing more than talking meat? And if there were fewer people maybe the PETA nuts would be able to find free chairs in their local Starbucks? What's next, free euthanasia of a burdensome relative when you put down Spot? There is such thing as bad publicity, bad judgement, and morally questionable campaigns.

I'll take them up on that offer. Vasectomy procedures aren't cheap and my dog needs to be neutered.

I wish the government would outlaw all these petty organizations and special interest groups. I'm sure storing a cat in a tiny cage for weeks at a time isn't cruel, either. Right.

Haha... The more they do stuff like this, the less seriously people will take them (not that anyone really takes them seriously now anyway).

Why are there so many hostile comments here? I'll admit that this is weird publicity stunt, but what exactly are you all so upset about? Are you against vasectomies? Are you against neutering your pets? Is it offensive that someone would link the two, despite their already obvious similarities? Or are you just against PETA in general, and you would post angry comments no matter what they do?

Google PETA - you will find they put down a lot of dogs as the cost is too high to keep them all. They are more concerned with fund raising than animal welfare. To be fair, they should at least offer free tubal ligations to women who have their female animals altered.

Interesting. Does PETA require its members to walk the talk? If not, then it stands to reason that they themselves don't believe their own position.

Why don't they just create birth control for animals? Then everyone can stay au natural! I am shocked that they are even promoting neutering, I thought they would consider that cruel.

While this is a little over the top, and large families are not as prominent as they once were. It is a fact that eventually the world will not be able to support the population of humans. Eventually the available resources will not be enough to support the population. Animals will be the first to suffer the consequences of this, followed by humans. Some places in the world are already feeling these types of shortages. Should make us thankful for what we have here in Canada now, but not close our eyes to what might affect us in the future.

Perhaps PETA should take its campaign of human sterilization to communist China and India. The populations of those 2 single nations is half the planet so I think they should spare the Americas their condescending lectures about people over-population.

Wow! Someone finally states suggests the best measure available to deal with climate change and people label them as wackos.People, overpopulation is killing this planet and human's refuse to take any steps to self regulate their species. Some believe we need to use better technology to feed all the hungry mouths of the world. Why, so we can jam more people onto this globe? Sorry but mouths are hungry because these populations refuse to stop having mouths to feed. While I don't agree with many of PETA's policies, this is a great one!

I guess this would make all the pets feel better knowing that there owners are also going to be sterile. One big party and no worries.

I think it's a great idea we have been trying to tell people to neuter your pets because of overpopulation but the real answer is people need to be neutered. Out of every animal on the planet we are the most overpopulation and if nothing is done we wont have very much resources left.

@Cute Little Puppy in the Window, Okay, WOW, genocide is way over the top exaggeration. Nations all over are promoting voluntary population control already with common birth control methods. From what you are saying, contraceptives and vasectomies are equal to genocide. Really? These things are happening all the time in Canada, so is Canada in the middle of a genocide? No. I agree that there is a major problem in pet and human populations and that they need to be addressed. PETA is just not the best organized (fanatic) group to be promoting this issue. But hey, at least we're talking about it.

Yes, disappearing wilderness is a crime and a major shame. The human population must stop growing, absolutely. But how exactly is the wilderness protected by having more cats and dogs around???

Ha! I love these guys, just when you think there are already too many nuts in the fruit cake, BAM! Another one pops up. There is a positive view to this though, if PETA members follow through with this maybe they will go extinct....

Vasectomies are free in Canada. Why would PETA offer a free service to do something that any pet owner should do anyway?PETA members can go get their vasectomies first, and based on their reports, I probably still wouldn't consider doing it.I am for the protection of animals, but organizations like PETA give me and other normal people who care about animals a really bad image. I did have a good laugh over this article. I support the protection of animals, but not through these clowns!

Some one should neuter them. Absolute nut jobs.Another example of eco-facist's. These types have been says for decades that the end of the world is coming; bla bla bla. Human life is a valueble resourse. The planet can support many more billions. This is typical NWO propaganda; that we should hate ourselves.Granted, maintaining a safe pollution reduced environment must continue to be a top priority.

OOOOO SHOCKING! What a great way to get free publicity and bring attention to a serious cause, millions of unwanted dogs and cats are killed every year, but yet people "animal lovers" still refuse to get thier pets fixed.

I've met a few members of PETA, and by and large they are vegans and vegetarians, completely against farming animals for sustanance, and so I pose this question to the PETA members of the world...If it's wrong to eat animals, then why are they made of meat?

PETA is populated by a fringe group of fanatics who seem much more interested in self-promotion through publicity stunts than they are in actually improving the welfare of animals. This silliness just proves it. Even my dog is laughing.

I'd love to review footwear at a PETA conference and see how many wear running shoes with leather. People who value animals over human beings are beyond contempt.

Most of the world population numbers are bogus. Corrupt governments inflate their population numbers to get more handouts. Many countries do not have the infrastructure to an honest census.

Why do hare-brained idiots greatest ideas always stumble on one teeny issue? THEY never follow the advise that they want us to. PETA wants to reduce the human population? Then start with the PETA population. BTW - PETA, in future please use the correct term for your ideas on population control - genocide.
