I'm still hoping for a party that will actually try and convince us that what they plan to do is best, rather than say what the other guys are doing is wrong. Whatever happened to that part in politics. You only ever hear/see ads about mud slinging.

More 'below the belt' tactics expected this election

Date: Friday Mar. 25, 2011 5:08 PM ET

With the government expected to fall Friday, the tone of the political cut and thrust has already gotten nasty with attack ads airing even before the campaign gets underway.

And one political observer says it's only going to get worse when Prime Minister Stephen Harper drops the election writ, as he is widely expected to do this weekend.

Bernard Gauthier, head of the Ottawa public relations firm Delta Media, says attack ads run the risk of alienating voters if they are perceived as "hitting below the belt," but adds that appears to be a risk the major political parties are prepared to take.

"What's interesting is that when you start off in an election campaign you never know where that line is: where that belt is that you can't hit below," Gauthier told CTV's Canada AM.

"Generally the parties feel around until all of a sudden they hit there, the public and the news media react and they typically withdraw the ad right away and say: ‘No, no, it was a misunderstanding or a mistake.'

"And it can definitely hurt them in the polls because it starts to call into question the fairness of the party and Canadians do have a sense of fairness when it comes to elections."

Perhaps the most famous example of a Canadian political ad backfiring was the Tory television campaign during the 1993 election campaign that appeared to mock Liberal Leader Jean Chretien's facial defigurement, the result of a childhood disease.

"That was one of the first and most important examples of an attack ad that hit below the belt," Gauthier said. "Immediately people sensed that this was way below the belt and it certainly didn't help (Conservative leader) Kim Campbell's chances."

Although the Tories quickly withdrew the offending ad, they went down to the worst election defeat in Canadian history falling from a majority government to only two seats in the House of Commons.

In the last federal election campaign, the Liberals made a misstep with ads that attempted to frighten voters away from electing Stephen Harper, warning ominously that his policies would result in "Soldiers with guns in our cities. In Canada."

That campaign flopped because it took Tory policy too far out of context.

In the current, pre-election campaign, both the Conservatives and the Liberals seem to be trying to walk the fine line between attacking their opponents and taking personal pot-shots.

For the past few weeks, the Conservatives have been airing a series of television ads questioning Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff's commitment to Canada, warning voters: "He's not in it for you or for Canada. He's just in it for himself. It's the only reason he's back. Michael Ignatieff. Just visiting"

The Liberals fired back with their own attack on Harper, listing government scandals and concluding: "Harper thinks he's above the law. Is this your Canada? Or Harper's?"

Gauthier said that already combative tone won't improve once the election is finally called.

"The ads that I've seen so far don't augur well for the upcoming election … we've really moved now to ads that attack people personally," he said.

With the Internet, social media sites and blogs playing a bigger role in political campaigns, he says there is more and more opportunity for all political parties to fly trial balloons -- attack ads that push the boundaries of what is acceptable in a Canadian election campaign.

"That's a new feature of elections now, things that are posted on websites or posted on blogs," he said. "All of that now comes into play, so it's a lot more complex landscape because the messages appear in more places.

The deciding factor for Gauthier is what kind of images the ads use of their target, usually the leader of the opposing parties. "That for me is the mark of attack ads: that the visual is primarily a very negative, detrimental photo of the other party's leader."

I can't help but laugh at all these Conservatives decrying "the Coalition". You do realize that Harper tried to do the EXACT SAME THING when Martin was PM, right??? The socialists and the separatists didn't seem so evil then...

My vote will be a spiteful one this time around. I didn't want an election, and my vote will reflect that to the opposition parties. Since the Liberals, Bloc, and NDP want this election, will they at least have the decency to foot all expenses for it? If they can do that, then my vote might be swayed. But I'm not counting on it.

Naveed, change is indeed on the way. Latest poll puts Conservatives 43 % and Liberals 24 %. Canadians are pretty smart. They can see that the whole "contempt of parliament" thing is just partisan politics. Any party should have the competence to figure out the cost of things like changes to the justice system. The Libs had the purse strings for a lot of years. Too bad they were too busy filling their own pockets to pay attention to how much things cost. Despite Ignatieff's barbecue tour and attempts to slander Harper and his government, his numbers do not go up. Canadians don't like the guy. Back to the academic field for him.

Is there any elected official in this country who is actually DOING anything in respect to RUNNING the country?? What's the last thing any elected government has accomplished in terms of making things better for all Canadians? Isn't that why we elect them in the first place? It seems that since the last election, we've seen nothing but debates about power rather than anyone actually doing any work for the country and solving any problems. Will this election change anything? Likely not. I'm hopeful for a future where the people we elect actually work towards making things a better Canada and solving the problems that come along to make this country great!

There goes another 300 million dollars in taxes to pay for another election! I urge Canadians to recognize the foolishness of the opposition parties for forcing an election which is avoidable. Jack Layton and the NDP stand to lose seats in the House this time and Ignatieff is bound to lose support as well according to latest polls. Their only motivation is to form a coalition to gain power after the conservatives has achieved minority. So I urge Canadians to put down those parties responsible for sending us to an election. Do not make excuses for people who are blatantly trying to exploit you and this Country so to further there own ambition.

It's amazing to see that there are people who blame the 2 seats that Kim Campbell's Conservatives got on attack ads. Either they are incredibly out of touch with reality or else they weren't alive when that election took place. The Conservatives were obliterated because of a little thing called the GST that was forced down our throats that NOBODY wanted. And which, coincidentally, the Liberals lied about abolishing in order to get into power. Remember?

If we have to ahve an election; I plan on looking past the attack ads, to actually listen to the policies of the parties and the leaders. I am hoping that one of them has a vision for Canada that is consistent to my values. That said and done, I live in Calgary West. So I will voting for anybody but my incumbent! Look up Calgary West's MP and you will understand!

Once again the Conservatives are aiming their message at the lowest common denominator. Their polls have told them, their own supporters will vote no matter how negative the advertising is. Whereas, they also know that negative ads turn people away from politics. The lower the turnout, the better the chance King Steve has for a repeat performance. People it is time to think! Look at the ads and think about what they are saying. If parties must, let them attack policies, even in an exaggerated way, but they must be punished for telling lies, making innuendos or giving half truths about individual opponents.

I am so tired of hearing the "contempt" argument from Iggy after his party's involvement with ADscam. When leaders of the opposition decide, before the budget comes down, that they will not support it is this not contempt of parliament; contempt of the democratic process. What kind of Canada can we expect if the Bloc party becomes part of the coalition running our country. In my opinion, the Bloc should not be considered a federal party unless, and until, they run candidates in every riding across Canada. The sole purpose of the Bloc is to destroy Canada. Please think carefully before you vote Canadians - we desperately need a Conservative majority government to put this ridiculous anti-Canadian coalition to pasture.

At this point I am really really sick of these adultrs acting worse than 10 year old children. All this yelling and screaming and inappropriate behavious is ridiculous. If your children would behave like this in school they would be expelled. Why do we accept this from politicians? Why can't they act like adults? All these attact ads say NOTHING about their respective platforms? All we hear about is where they went to school, who they are plannig to side with and what was said (and usually taken out of context) years ago. Harper wanted to form a coalition and now so does Iggy, who cares? Obviously they both thought it worth while. Get over it, now what will you do to remove tax on home heating fuel? THAT is what I want to hear. What will you do to reduce taxes, inprove services etc...tell me EXACTLY how you intend to do that.

Look beyond the rhetoric and notice that the Conservatives have been found in contempt of Parliament, you know, Parliament as in the contempt for the people of Canada and not the Liberal or NDP parties. The Conservatives have been found by the courts of this land to have acted fraudently during the election (Courts are not run by political parties but is a tool of the state for the people of Canada). The Conservatives broke their own laws when Harper decided to call an election within two years of his first term (he was the one that pushed for the 4-year term and the first chance he saw at winning a majority he dumped his own ethics and stated beliefs to achieve his own ends to find power). The Conservatives point to how Iggnatief is only here for himself? Excuse Me but based on historical data, Harper's motives are entirely his own and has nothing to do with the best interests of Canadians. I have read Iggnatief's books and I personally would rather have him lead the country then Harper who will step on anyone and break whatever rule or belief that he needs to in order to secure his hold on the PMO.

Many talk about the "Harper Governemnt" as though it were above any reproach, but this Government has proven innumeral times, to be as reprehensible as any we have had.I am saddened that Canadian politcs has been driven down to this level, but even more saddened that so many of my fellow Canadians feel helpless to change it, or resigned to the fact that it is impossible to change. My only hope is that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, either redemption in the politcal areana, or the train to take us all out of this continued misery.

First off let me qualify by saying I'm 57 years old and have voted for all three major parties at some time in my life. I'm not a staunch conservative and I don't particularly like Steven Harper's style but let's face it they have been doing a great job were coming out this recession far better than any other country giving us an advantage for future economic growth. Thank God they were in power when the recession hit I can only imagine the mess we would be in now if one of the other parties were running things. During this economic crisis all I have heard is these three opposition parties attack and criticize this minority government. They have had since 2006 to come up with a better Idea or platform for running the government where is it? If they had the answers to our problems why wouldn't they have shared this during our economic crisis, shame on them? The answer is simple they don't have any answers watching Layton and Ignatieff on television you can see they can hardly keep a straight face when they are talking they don't even believe what they are saying. Now they want another a kick at the can they want your vote but can't prove that they can do a better job with real facts and a platform that they can be judged by, They just hope your naive enough to vote for them based on their attacks against the conservative government and their catering to special interest groups while the conservatives are trying to represent all Canadians and Canada as a whole. Now once again tax payer dollars are being wasted on another election do we need this disruption right now during this fragile economic recovery I personally don't think so. I'm mad as helll and I hope everybody else is the time has come for the silent majority to raise their voice and send a loud and clear message that we are tired of these games and put CANADA first before your own agendas.

We live in a society where people have no respect for their fellow citizen. Whether it be bullying and threats via social media sites, rudeness and hostility displayed in public settings such as pushing / shoving on public transit or road rage. Our elected public figures are prime examples of a loss of civility in our society. Have we not learned anything from US examples where this loss of civility leads to the murder of elected officials and innocent bystanders? Do we need to wonder why voter turn-out are at record lows? Which party is prepared to take the high road of civility and bring our Canadian society back to a healthy standing of respect for one another?

If only the Liberals spent half as much time actually trying to make parliament work as they do in their sleazy attacks on the Conservative government, and their use of committee meetings as kangaroo courts to slag Conservative members. They say that they want to make parliament work, but they have spent all of their time in plotting to take power by election if they can and by forming a coalition with the socialists and separatists. Can you imagine Ignatieff and Layton as Co-Prime Ministers with Gilles Duceppe holding the balance of power? At least Stephen Harper has proved that he can say "NO" to Quebec's blackmail demands. Iggy & Smilin' Jack - Not so much!If you want peace in Canada for the next 4 years, then vote for a Conservative Majority government to remove the constant threat of a snap election being called by the three opposition parties for the single reason that they think they can seize power.A majority government in the only thing that will truly make parliament work for all Canadians.

For months we have watched "Harper's Government", try and vilify Michael Ignatieff. We also have all born witness to "Harper's Government" using tax payer dollars to fund his anti Liberal campaign, which has to be the ultimate insult to all Canadians. When did he begin to feel such a feeling of entitlement to public funds, that he began to use them as his personal piggy bank? Now we are all learning about a man who served the Prime Minister at one of the highest levels who is little more than a convicted felon. "Harper's Government" has lost all moral and ethical credibility with Canadians. We were all promised an open, honest, and transparent government by "Harper's Government", and it has been anything but. What we witness is if the news reflects poorly on "Harper's Government, then it is kill the messenger. Recently it was divulged that a Ms. Ouimet was payed hush money to cover up her office burying all the complaints from Public Servants! Ethics!? I am sorry but this Harper's Government is rotten from the top down, and the stench is now covering the country from coast to coast to coast. No one wanted this election, but now it is here Canadians have some serious thinking to do. Add skyrocketing costs of unnecessary prisons to our already out of control debt and most Canadians are outraged. Lastly, I would like to mention the Budget Officer, Kevin Page's findings on the true cost of the fighter jets, which appears to be at least twice the amount given by Harper's Government. Open, honest, and transparent, I think not.

All you Conservative backers here and elsewhere in the country, take heed. Change is on the way, and your petty dictator type Stephen Harper is about to be kicked out soon. All you folks can do is to aimlessly villify and falsely criticize Ignatieff and the Liberals, and we never hear from you justifiably defending Stephen Harper himself positively. Why? You have nothing authentic to back your arguements. When people point out to you that the Conservative government has been responsible TODAY for untold scandals and anti-democratic behaviour, all you can do is point the finger at some past supposed Liberal demeanour, such as the sponsorship scandal in Chretiens time. Its only fear-mongering and out of proportion, false and irrelevant attack that you are good at, you have nothing to stand on supporting your sneaky dicatator Harper . Except his brainwashing and hypocritical tactics.

All voter age canadians must vote and then make their politician do for there area what they said they will do. How many voters "really" know what they are voting for? Just like a large company cannot be managed solely by what its employees want, a country cannot be managed solely by what its people want. It takes a "manager" who has the guts to say NO. Harper has the guts. This doesn't mean he is always right, but it is still better than the alternative. Most countries in the world envy our country. Compare Canada's economic situation to most other countries, and listen to what financial experts around the world think about our economy. All that was accomplished while the opposition kept saying Harper was managing it all wrong. I don't think they could have done any better!

The Conservatives warning Canadians of a potential coalition if they vote for a minority Conservative government is a real issue. Canadians need to understand that the opposition parties have little use for the Conservative government and so if the opposition think they can convince the GG to hand power to them they will certainly try.We saw this with the contempt citation. No majority government has ever held their own MPs in contempt but in a minority parliament that is possible because the opposition control the committees. The Conservatives need to keep hammering away because the country could see the Russian Count, the Socialists and the Separatist in control of the treasury.

This Liberal caucus has done their utmost to deceitfully "paint" the Conservatives as a problem (couple of issues, yes) but notice it was these same Liberal MP's who outright refused to cooperate for 5 years while in the role of Opposition? It was their MANDATE to cooperate as Opposition members to do their best to get along with the Government on behalf of Canadians and they totally refused instead preferring to engage in slimy politics which they are known for. It is unethical for the Liberals to collect their pay cheques while totally focusing all their efforts to defeat the elected Government instead of doing what they were supposed to do. Now I see Michael Ignatieff blatantly lies in a TV ad about his family past which is a complete contradiction to a biography HE wrote. When will this Liberal bullsyht deceit ever stop? I would like to hear the policy plans of each party on how they will make for a better Canada not slurs on the opposition candidates past present or future evils or possibilities there of. I, as are many other Canadians, am tired of watching the children behave badly in the sandbox, perhaps their mommies could give them a good spanking and a time out so they could grow up and be good adults. Watching the parliament on CPAC is a disgrace. I was taught at school many years ago that Roberts Rules and orders were the precis of parliamentary proceedure. This involves respect of the time of each member to have his say and not shouting down others as they have theirs. The child like squabbling displayed in the house has now carried on into the campaign arena. We the people need to make it known to our political participants that we are no longer interested in their childish finger pointing blame game and name calling but for them to mature and tell us what they intend to do if elected to government.

I wish to see more ads about what each party will bring to Canada, what they will focus on for priorities, and their vision for the future. Not so much about what's wrong about the opposition. We already know who Harper, Iggy, Layton and Duceppe is. Hmm, going to check each party's main page, see what it says. Bloc says 'Attention: Risk of Conservative Majority' in caps... guess that means vote for them, huh... Liberals say 'Get to know Michael Ignatieff', guess that's not too bad, Conservative is 'Here for Canada', not too bad, I'm surprised haha. And NDP is 'This is Canadian Leadership' but has open first 'Harper budget fails families' in all caps. Watched the new conservative ad, personally didn't like it. Too dramatic.

My take on this

I am 62 years old and have followed politics closely since I was a teenager. I have voted Liberal and voted Conservative as I felt appropriate in the past. Now however, I have never witnessed such an underhanded all out attack on any government by the Opposition as we have seen in the way these Opposition Liberals have undermined this Conservative government. They have not in any way tried to function in their position as Opposition. Its slimy politics and repugnant to me as a voters. Is the Harper gang lily white? No. But the Liberals right now are much worse with the deep manipulative tactics they are engaged in. I intend to support the Government if they force this election. I have ZERO trust or confidence in these Liberals which are after all a regional party not a national one.

I have seen what the Conservatives can and will do for the betterment of Canada and until Mr Ignatief can come out and tell me what his plans are then I will continue to listen to and vote for PM Harper....all I ask is a plan from the Liberals and what they intend on doing to make Canada a better place....then we will see which way I vote....show me the plan!!!!!

Attack ads are childish propaganda that play on the minds of the ignorant. The just visiting ads do just that, after all Iggy only worked in the US for 6 years. All great Canadians have worked in the US & Europe. Isn't Wayne Gretzky working in the USA?

Mr Chretien imported the attack ad campaign model into Canada when he attacked Stockwel Day for his faith. The Liberals all enjoyed the moment, but now that it came back to bite them, they whine and complain. Well, you reap what you have sown. It doesn't help to label it a Conservative evil now. And Iggy is not so innocent either; just listen to him and how he desperately tries to get himself up there.

i used to be liberal a long time ago. the last 2 elections i have gone conservative. i will probably vote conservative again this time. I am hoping the conservatives get their majority to finally shut those clowns up. however, wouldn't it be a shock if everyone in canada voted for the green party and kicked butt in the election. i wonder what jack, gilles and michael would say then.

Look people, its time to give Harper the Majority. At least he has a business approach, not an entitlement approach like the Libs. If you have a job, and pay taxes, he's the right guy for the next 4 years. If it doesn't work out, we can oust him then. It won't be worse than the Libs, but it could be a lot better, a LOT better.

I would rather hear what each party has for a plan to help Canadians, not pointing fingers at each other saying what a bad job THEY are doing. We do not need to be told what has happened in the last few years, we had to live it and watch it. All parties are guilty of doing something wrong at one time or another. I want to know what their plan is for tomorrow.

The last several elections have not been about governing for the best of Canada, but about siezing power. I am very tired of the rhetoric of fear that the Liberals have cast over Harper with their "hidden agenda" mongering; I am tired of the rhetoric of "shiftiness" the Conservatives make of Ignatieff; I am tired of the NDP's rheotirc of "promising the moon" so they can have three more seats; and I am extremely tired of Bloc's anti-Canada rant - if you can be a national party, then you should not be allowed to run federally - TO ALL PARTIES - SHOW ME YOUR POLICIES! Tell me what you will do for my family, my region, my province, my nation. Tell me how your policies are better than the others and point out their problems with their policies. Let me decide. I can tell you this - I will not vote for the party that spends most of their time taking aim at the other person.

Don't blame the Conservatives, since the master of attack below the belt was Mr. Chretien when he began all this modern sleaze with his depiction of Mr. Day, as 'Leader of the Dark Forces' and you can't get any lower than that.

I'm still hoping for a party that will actually try and convince us that what they plan to do is best, rather than say what the other guys are doing is wrong. Whatever happened to that part in politics. You only ever hear/see ads about mud slinging.

I would have alot more respect if they stuck to their platforms instead of attacking a person. Just shows how little they have to support thier claim they are the "right choice" for canadians.

Just when you thought the Conservative party couldn't go any lower... Just wait and see what they can do to further disgrace this country, the opposition and ultimately themselves. Masters they are a stooping to lows to make themselves look better when the going gets tough. It disgusts me. Desperate people do desperate things. And now... stay tuned for the Conservative posters defending this shameful act with their own degree of low level verbiage!

This will just cause more ordinary Canadians to loose interest in politics. Politicians seem to have a life of their own on their own little planet that is far removed from the world where everybody else lives. No wonder most people prefer to watch a soap instead of the news on TV.
