Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff is taking aim at the Conservatives' ethics and spending habits, as opposition parties prepare for two potential election triggers.

The government will unveil its federal budget Tuesday, setting up a later vote on the document.

But an election could also be sparked as early as Friday, if the parties vote on whether the government should be held in contempt of Parliament -- the Conservatives are accused of withholding the costs of its crime bills.

Speaking to CTV's Question Period on Sunday, Ignatieff accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper of spending taxpayers' money "like a drunken sailor" for partisan gain.

He pointed to a recent round of government announcements to promote spending on social housing, crime prevention, and other projects totalling more than $1 billion.

"Count up all the things he went across the country promoting last week -- it's a billion dollars," Ignatieff told Question Period.

"That pattern of waste and highly partisan spending, just to win an election, I think destroys his credibility as an economic manager," said Ignatieff.

But he side-stepped repeated questions on whether his party would use either Tuesday's budget or a vote on contempt charges to trigger an election.

"I honestly don't know what's going to happen this week but I'm ready for anything. We could go (to the polls) this week or next year," he said.

Ignatieff was himself recently accused of promising taxpayers' money to garner political gain, after musing last week that his party might fund a hockey arena in Quebec City if they formed the next government.

He said the arena would serve a cultural purpose, although the city would use the space in its attempt to lure back an NHL team. Harper has said the government should not fund an NHL arena.

Pollster Nik Nanos said recently that whether the Government falls on the budget or issues of its transparency could make a big difference at the ballot box.

The prime minister would undoubtedly prefer to frame the vote around his government's handling of the economy, while the opposition would rather focus on his perceived abuse of power, said Nanos.

instead of complaining about Harper why doesn't Iggy come up with something substantial and not just complain complain complain, because no matter who's voted in they do the same. So sick of the bashing.

Given Iggy's claims to be in favour of some wildly expensive programs (keep in mind they're also planning to buy a fleet of fighters for the military) I don't think accusing Harper, or anyone else, of spending too much is a good idea. The real issue for the Liberals is that they're also promising all sorts of expensive projects and simply unwilling or unable to provide any details.Either the Liberals really don't know how much they'd be spending or they know totally and are afraid to tell Canadians the details.Check out Ken Dryden's website; he trashes the Cons on childcare and fails entirely to explain whatever the Liberals would offer instead.

Obviously the people commenting on here critcizing Harpers spending don't vote conservative, which means they are either Liberal,NDP,Bloc or Green supporters or don't vote at all.Until I see a practical plan to eliminate government waste and cut spending(meaning smaller gov't)why vote for anyone but the status quo.The change i would like to see is eliminating 20% of the government workforce to start, and freeze all tax rates,

Let me say that I am no supporter of Harper and the Conservatives any longer(although always a Conservative or Reform supporter).I find so many of the comments, largely directed at Ignatieff and Liberals over the top.You are simply spewing what you hear in attack ads and it is filled with the hate and deceipt Harper claims as fact.Ignatieff has a very impressive resume and is well respected throughout Europe,Britain and the USA.That cannot be negative.Harper is very far from perfect(transparency, accountality, fiscal resposiblity, honesty can be questioned). If you looked into his past with National Coaliton and what he has said many of you Cons would have Harper up on charges of treason.Google Harpers past statements and find out.Let us be objective and let the politicians have their say and let them be judged on that. Not attack ads.

Harper IS spending money like a drunken sailor! And if you're offended by the term, go nitpick something else to death. That's MY money and YOUR money that he's throwing around on issues that are only a concern for him now that his government is in jeopardy! What about Health Care, Seniors, and my pension? Heathen Stephen has got to go! He epitomizes absolutely everything he once claimed (in order to get votes) that he was against. He's just turned out to be another vote mongering, lying politician. Well if you Cons want to keep bringing up the Sponsorship issue after 6 years then it's fair ball to bring back the Mulroney issues. Harper campaigned on cleaning up and it turns out he's the first PM in history to go down for Contempt of Parliament. Saying they did it or everyone does it does not make it right. BTW, Harper condemns coalitions in Canada and trumpets the coalition he just joined in Paris...more double speak.

I may not necessarily agree with Stephen Harper, and he wouldn't be my first choice if there's an election. However, I definitely will not be voting liberal if Michael Ignatieff is still leader of the Liberal party. Every time I see Ignatieff in the news, he is blaming the harper government for something, always pointing fingers. This is very childish, If there's a problem with something, Identify it, propose a resolution to fix it, and leave out the unnecessary name calling. As far as I'm concerned, if a leader wants to be creditable, Then be professional and genuine; be what the people want a leader to be. Because if all they do is blame others now for what's wrong, they will still blame others for what's wrong when they are in power and will never take ownership for their actions.

Iggy is right. This government has produced the biggest deficit in Canadian history. Between the Economic Action Plan and rebranding all of the Canadian Government websites in Tory Blue, he has spend roughly one billion tax payer dollars on Conservative Propaganda. His party circumvented election financing laws by more than 5% in an elaborate scheme to defraud the taxpayers through false invoices and receipts. His softwood lumber deal is one of the wost trade blunders in Canadian history and has resulted in the closing of mills across the country. His so called trade America deals have no economic value. His failure to secure a seat at the Security Council is an incredible embarrassment and a true indication of how the world views our country under his leadership. His gov't deregulated the housing sector (40 yr, zero down mortagages) before seeing the bubble they were creating and the results of that effect in the US. Finally, let's not forget that he is behind the HST, through large transfer payments to ON and BC and spent over a billion dollars on a 3 day conference this summer (G8). History will show that The Harper Government (TM) is one of the most financially inept governments in Canadian history.

For an academic Mr Ignatieffs choices of words and phrases these days is deplorable and should not be tolerated. It is beginning to smack of the cowboy American politics he is used to. Claims of fiscal responsibility and restraint from Ignatieff ring just as hollow as the claims of integrity and accountablilty from Harper. Politicians are all too happy to promise us anything (bought with our own money of couse) and claim wide eyed innocence in the face of overwhelming evidence of their near criminal arrogance and abuse of the system for their own gain. Canada has no real leaders. Both of thesse men have such a deficit of character and surplus of hubris that it is no wonder that neither has inspried more than a minority of the electorate.

For all you righties Harping (pardon the pun) about how well Harpy got us thru this recession, this is just BUNK. We would have gotten thru it NO MATTER who was at the helm. Has Harper created the largest structural deficit in our countries history,,,,YES he has. Did the opposition ask him to spend stimulus dollars,,,Yes they did. Did they ask only for around $15 billion in stimulus spending????,,,,,,again the answer is yes. Did Harper himself go way overboard with his drunken spending,,,,HELL YEAH.So to sum it all up the economy would have rolled along no matter who was in power. But let's bring up ethics and accountability. THAT is where Harper is in a ton of trouble. Not because of any large issue but as we've finally seen over the past months a very large collection of small but important issues. If you Con supporters believe it is OK to just throw out our democratic rights and principals,,,,then I got a newsflash for the 35% of you that support them.....IT IS important to the other 65% of us and that is what Harper is going to have to fight an election over. But just watch all the Cons come back with Adscam,,,,etc. This is your Adscam unfolding and it's not looking good for you.

Taking a non-partisan look at things right now I don't know if we need an election. The deficet although not pleasant is less than it was estimated to be, the economy is slowly recovering and the opposition forced quit date is about to arrive for the war in Afghanistan. My question is how would the government be run differently? I am not looking for slogans or emotional appeals (I don't care who amended what memo), other other than the cancellation of the F-35 program what would the Liberals do? Similarly, what would the conservatives do with a majority government? I am not feeling good about this either way. Or of course we could find ourselves in the same boat we are in now, then what?

Hypocrisy, thy name is Iggy. The Liberals have promised a 45-day work year for EI eligibility, a national daycare system, high-speed internet in every part of Canada, and a new federal program to fund professional sports arenas, to name just a few of the most costly items. To fund these things, they want to raise federal business taxes back to 18% (killing over 100,000 jobs by most estimates), raise the GST back to 7% (hitting the lowest-income Canadians the hardest) and cancel procurements for the millitary (ushering in another "decade of darkness" for our troops and our international standing). Meanwhile, Harper has the deficit falling even faster than planned, is reducing program and operational costs, and is maintaining health care transfers, military funding and other essentials.
